This paper proposes a new approach for a sequence estimator to utilize redundancy of transmitted data more effectively. The main concept of the proposed estimator is that it compares only the path metrics of transition paths which agree with the coding rules of modulation in the sequence estimation process. The concept has been found to be effective even for a sequence estimator with decision feedback loops such as a DDFSE, for error propagation can be suppressed. Simulation results, using CCK as a codeword, show that the proposed estimator's packet error rate performance is superior to that of a DDFSE with a codeword correlator, with a 19% improvement in multipath tolerance and 3.5 dB improvement in noise tolerance.

A space vector modulator with variable clock frequency is presented in the paper. It is based on the selection of the appropriate modulator clock frequency according to the minimum value of the switching states duration. The purpose is to reduce at the same time the dead time effect on the voltage inverter output waveform, the harmonic content and switching losses. The proposed techniques has been implemented by means of a digital modulator realized by using programmable logic devices. Several tests have been performed and the results compared with the fixed frequency modulation techniques.

The combination of code division multiple access (CDMA) and multi-carrier (MC) modulation has been proposed for high rate wireless communications. The main idea is to transmit the high data rate stream on a number of parallel lower rate channels. The long symbol duration associated with each subcarrier makes the system more susceptible to various imperfections, such as frequency offset, phase noise and fast fading, that destroy the orthogonality between the subcarriers and degrade performance. In this paper, we propose a novel and simple receiver structure to address the effects of imperfections. The proposed receiver fully compensates for the frequency offset and phase noise effects and, unlike existing designs, exploits temporal channel variations to attain a higher level of diversity, thereby improving system performance over that under slow fading.

In an attempt to improve the performance under a frequency selective fading environment, we propose an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDM) system in which MTCM (multiple trellis coded modulation) is applied to a set of multiple subcarriers. The code is designed to enlarge the summation of the Euclidean distance and the product distance. We also propose a scheme for assigning the symbols to subcarriers adaptively based on the channel state information (CSI) fed back from the reception receive end, and evaluate the performance applying these two codes and the proposed scheme under a multipath Rayleigh fading environment.

We obtain upper bounds on the bit-error rate (BER) for turbo-coded optical code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems using pulse position modulation (PPM.) We use transfer function bounding techniques to obtain these bounds, so our results correspond to the average bound over all interleavers of a given length. We consider parallel concatenated coding (PCC) schemes that use recursive convolutional codes as constituent codes. We consider systems using an avalanche photodiode (APD), and treat APD noise, thermal noise, and multi-user interference using a Gaussian approximation. We compare the performance of turbo coded systems with that of BCH-coded systems with soft-decision decoding. We show that turbo-coded systems have better performance than BCH-coded systems.

We consider the design of space-time constellations based on group codes for fading channels with multiple transmit and receive antennas. These codes can be viewed as multi-antenna extensions of phase-shift keying, in the sense that all codewords have equal energy, all are rotations of a fixed codeword, and there is a simple differential transmission rule that allows data to be sent without channel estimates at the transmitter or receiver. For coherent detection, we show that all optimal full-rank space-time group codes are unitary (each code matrix has equal-energy, orthogonal rows). This leads to a simpler code design criterion and shows that unitary codes play an important role in coherent as well as noncoherent communication. For any number of transmit antennas t, we use the design criterion to characterize all full-rank unitary group codes of minimum blocklength (also t) with 2/sup p/ codewords. In principle, these results allow us to determine all optimal unitary group codes with square code matrices, which matches the class of codes proposed recently for differential modulation.

The use of antenna arrays can help to combat cochannel interference (CCI) in wireless cellular systems. In interference-limited scenarios, spatio-temporal filtering techniques based on a deterministic least-square (LS) approach may be competitive with respect to trellis based algorithms, because of the difficulties of accurately modelling the space-time characteristics of CCI. We consider the impact on the receiver performance of the quality of the reliability information on the coded bits, computed at the output of the deterministic space-time equalizer. Simulation results are provided for an EGPRS receiver employing linear and decision-feedback training-based filtering techniques.

Considering that mobile communications systems and the Internet are key technologies for the development of the information society, one objective of the European IST project BRAIN is the design of a mobile broadband IP radio interface. This radio interface is based on the ETSI HIPERLAN Type 2 standard with some enhancements necessary to optimise the system for the delivery of IP broadband services with high QoS and mobility requirements. The project is working on optimising layer 2 algorithms and protocols for IP mobile services such as adapted schedulers, optimised handover procedures, handling of a standby mode and specifying a dedicated LP Convergence Layer able to transport efficiently IP version 4 as well as version 6 packets over the air and interworking with LP mobility and QoS functions.

In this paper, analytical performance bounds are presented for a hierarchical coded modulation system of the type which has been proposed for backward compatibility and/or variable error rate protection. This system uses two convolutional encoders (and two Viterbi (1989) decoders) with a hierarchical 16-QAM constellation, and is compatible with an existing QPSK based coded system. In the AWGN channel, we derive upper bounds for four different schemes (two decoding schemes, multi-stage decoding (MSD) and independent decoding(ID), and two labeling schemes, Gray labeling (GL) and non-Gray labeling (NGL)). We show that the performance of the simple GL with ID scheme is nearly optimum in the AWGN channel. Then we analyze the GL with ID scheme in the Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results are given for comparison with the bounds.

Changing from orthogonal spreading codes in a direct-sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) system to more powerful forward error correcting convolutional codes is proven superior in an asynchronous uplink system. This approach is referred to as code-spread CDMA (CS-CDMA). In this paper these two systems are compared in a synchronous downlink scenario. Both systems are assumed to operate over channels with nonzero delay spread, making it difficult to maintain orthogonality between users at the receiver. Using synchronous transmission, the DS-CDMA system is found to outperform the CS-CDMA system at high loads on all simulated channels. However, it is found that if the CS-CDMA system is allowed to transmit different users asynchronously through independent fading channels, like in an uplink scenario, it outperforms the synchronous downlink DS-CDMA system already on channels with modest delay spread.
