An infrared (IR) wireless network standard called Advanced Infrared (AIr) was proposed to the Infrared Data Association in April 1997. AIr provides a dynamic trade-off between bit rate and transmission range by employing four-slot pulse-position modulation (PPM) with variable-rate repetition coding (RC). At the media-access control (MAC) layer carrier-sensing multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is utilized. To prevent collisions in case of hidden terminals, request-to-send and clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) packets are exchanged to reserve the channel. To insure that RTS/CTS exchange works reliably, it is necessary to maintain reciprocity, which means that the signal-to-noise ratio is symmetric between each pair of transceivers. In practice, however, reciprocity can be violated due to poor transceiver design, manufacturing tolerances, or ambient light noise. We use a layered simulation approach to investigate the impact of non-reciprocity on the performance of IR wireless LANs. Studying the example of AIr in detail we show that non-reciprocity can substantially reduce throughput and increase unfairness.

In the North American CDMA standards IS-95 and cdma2000, variable data rates are used according to the detected voice activity and the supported data services. For bit rates not exceeding 14.4 kbit/s, the rate information is not provided to the receiver and therefore has to be detected by hypothesis testing called blind rate detection. In this paper, a novel two-stage rate detection algorithm is proposed. First, a coarse rate estimation is performed. Through verifying the estimation using a second criterion, the data rate can be detected with a high probability without testing all possible data rates. Using this algorithm, 91% of the received frames need to be decoded only once resulting in a significantly decreased power consumption of the channel decoder of 60% without having any performance loss when compared to conventional rate detection.

Multiple trellis coding containing with biorthogonal sequence modulation, and the application of this scheme to CDMA cellular systems for high-speed rate data transmission are presented in this paper. The reasons for us to study such schemes are: the important property of MTCM having significant coding gain over an uncoded system with less complexity and without reducing the data rate or requiring more band width, less phase jitter sensitivity, superior performance on the fading channel.

We consider the serial concatenation of a convolutional code and a continuous phase modulation separated by a random interleaver. It is shown that the continuous phase modulator has the same behavior as a recursive systematic convolutional code in serial turbo codes. The interleaver gain produced by the modulator and the random interleaving depends only on the minimum Hamming distance of the outer code. A soft-input soft-output detection algorithm is described and applied in an iterative joint detection-decoding scheme. Simulated performance over Gaussian and Rayleigh channels shows a dramatic gain over both uncoded modulation and classic detection.

Iterative (turbo) decoding of a coded, interleaved continuous-phase modulated (CPM) waveform is presented. The transmitter consists of a rate-2/3 convolutional encoder followed by an interleaver, and an 8-ary continuous phase modulator. At the receiver, soft output a posteriori probability algorithms for the convolutional code and the CPM waveform iteratively refine their probability estimates. Current simulation results show a 2.5 dB SNR improvement (at 10/sup -5/ bit-error rate) over trellis-coded CPM (TCCPM) with a 99% bandwidth efficiency of 1.24 bps/Hz. The detector has a complexity of approximately 4.5 times that of the TCCPM system.

Coded modulation for differentially encoded PSK with non-coherent reception on flat fading channels is considered. We derive theoretical limits on the performance and show how to design multilevel coding schemes and bit-interleaved coded modulation. Since Gray labeling is not possible for multiple symbol differential detection and PSK constellations, bit-interleaved coded modulation exhibits severe degradation compared to the multilevel coding approach. By means of simulations, where turbo codes are used as component codes, the theoretical considerations are confirmed and we show how close theoretical limits of differentially encoded PSK transmission over flat fading channels can be approached by applying properly designed coded modulation schemes.

In future packet based wireless communication systems, transmission in the downlink will often dominate the traffic load. High bit-rate applications like WWW-browsing, file transfer, and full motion video will impose strong requirements on the system capacity. An obstacle in this context is the time-variability of the channel: for mobile users, frequently occurring fading dips will cause unnecessary and capacity degrading retransmissions. To achieve a high throughput also over fading channels, adaptive methods for adjustment of, for example, the modulation alphabet, and the coding complexity, can be used. The idea is to make efficient use of the bits: whenever the channel conditions are adequate, transmission of redundant bits should be avoided. In this paper we investigate the effect of adaptive modulation, along with time-slot scheduling, in a scenario involving several mobiles and one base station. We found that the bit error rate can be kept at an adjustable low level, well suited for forward error correction (FEC) codes. Moreover, the more mobiles that share a frequency channel, the more efficiently the scheduler uses the channel bandwidth.

Serial concatenated convolutional coding with iterative decoding is examined for data transmission over the downlink of a W-CDMA system employing BPSK modulation and coherent RAKE receiver. Performance of serial concatenated convolutional coding is studied in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. The effect of correlated fading on the performance of the proposed system is investigated by considering external block interleaver delays of 10 and 100 ms at mobile speeds 5 and 100 km/h. Simulation results show that this coding scheme achieves very good performance, outperforming conventional convolutional codes.

In this communication we consider the use of an hybrid modulation method called amplitude and pulse-position modulation (APPM) in infrared WLAN. In this hybrid method the information is conveyed both in the position and amplitude of a pulse. The bandwidth efficiency and the capacity of this new modulation scheme are derived and compared against pulse-position modulation (PPM), which allows us to conclude that APPM can be used to improve the performance of PPM without bandwidth expansion, using trellis-coded modulation (TCM) codes. We also derive the best trellis codes for some A/spl times/2-APPM, and the results show that non-negligible coding gains can be obtained with trellis codes of moderate complexity.

In this paper, we propose a simple detection scheme for a d=2 optical recording channel. The detection method employs a partial response target that introduces destructive interference, but which is effectively removed by modifications to the threshold detector. Bit error rate performance simulations based on pulses obtained from both a channel model and a real DVD system show that the new detection technique achieves 1.5-2 dB improvement over direct threshold detection following equalization to symmetric target response of memory 4. The proposed scheme performs better than Viterbi detection with an optimal partial response target of memory 4, while having a complexity comparable to that of a threshold detector.
