Multilevel modulation codes for partial response (PR) channels can be constructed using a structured set partition (SSP) of channel output words, and a set of block codes with different error correcting capabilities. We present SSP for the classical and modified E/sup 2/PR4 channels. The coding gain 3.5 dB can be achieved at the linear density 2.8 for ME/sup 2/PR channel with the target [5,4,-3,-4,-2] given by Sawaguchi et al. (see Proc. GLOBCOM-98, 1998).

A multiuser OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) downlink transmission with adaptive modulation is considered. Assuming that the base station knows the instantaneous channel gains for all users, we propose an algorithm which minimizes the total transmit power by assigning, to each user, a set of subcarriers within an OFDM symbol and by determining, for each sub-carrier, the number of bits to be transmitted and the power level used. We obtained the performance of our proposed algorithm in a multiuser frequency selective fading environment with various root-mean-square (RMS) delay spread. The results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms conventional OFDM systems with or without optimal bit allocation using TDMA or FDMA as multiaccess techniques. We have also quantified the improvement in terms of the required transmit power, for fixed bit error rate.

The field of space-time coded modulation (STCM) has recently attracted interest as a means of improving link reliability in mobile environments. It has been shown that these space-time multiple-antenna systems provide very high capacity when compared to single antenna systems in a Rayleigh fading environment. Specifically for the forward link, space-time coded transmit diversity should be incorporated into the wireless communication system in order to take full advantage of the combined space- (multiple-transmit antennas) and time- (forward error correction coding) diversity scheme. In this paper, we adopt an heuristic approach to the design and evaluation of diagonally layered STCM schemes by utilising classical multiple-trellis coded-modulation (MTCM) techniques. We focus mainly on the construction of simple 4-state diagonally layered space-time convolutionally coded systems. The designed STCM systems will be used in a comparative performance investigation with the originally proposed STCM codes. Computer simulations are used to evaluate the performance of the code designs on flat Rayleigh fading channels.

In this paper, we propose a new, reconfigurable algorithm for signal demapping: MUSCOD algorithm, used in DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting, Terrestrial version) receivers. The MUSCOD algorithm/architecture supports both hierarchical and nonhierarchical transmission modes. It implements different modulation schemes supported by the standard. We also propose a high-performance, reconfigurable symbol and bit deinterleaver working in conjuction with the demapper. We implement the proposed architecture using 0.6 /spl mu/m 3.3 V CMOS technology. The proposed architecture requires a system clock frequency of 36.57 MHz. It has a maximum throughput of 40.5 Mbits/s and dissipates 0.3 W.

The system performances of two different adaptive quadrature amplitude modulated code division multiple access multiuser detectors are evaluated. The adaptive multiuser detectors proposed are the minimum mean square error block decision feedback equalizer (MMSE-BDFE) and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) receiver. Our investigations show that for a COST 207 7-path Bad Urban Rayleigh fading channel, the MMSE-BDFE outperforms the SIC receiver in throughput performance terms for a target BER of 1%. However, this increased performance is achieved at the cost of a higher complexity.

In this paper, we propose a block coded modulation (BCM) technique to reduce the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) in OFDM systems. In the proposed technique, binary blocks are mapped to M-ary blocks and M-ary blocks of small sizes with low PAPR are selected. Large size M-ary blocks with low PAPR are constructed by using the selected small size M-ary blocks. Similar to trellis coded modulation, with this technique variable rates ranging from 1 to a rate much higher than 1 of BCM can be obtained upon different requirements of the random error correction capability in the system, given that the PAPR is below a fixed value. PAPR gain is defined by comparing with the uncoded OFDM system. Optimal coding gain for the BCM given a PAPR gain is also obtained in various cases.

We present a combined method of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with coordinate interleaving and a rotated constellation, also known as signal space diversity. The diversity order can be increased to twice the diversity order of BICM, which is the minimum Hamming distance of a code. This greatly improves the performance over Rayleigh fading while preserving minimum squared Euclidean distance of BICM. Our simulation results show that the new combined scheme greatly outperforms BICM and bit-interleaved I-Q TCM as well as coordinate-interleaved TCM over Rayleigh fading channels. We first describe BICM and signal space diversity schemes, then follow with the design of BICM with signal space diversity. The complexity reduction technique is also investigated.

The method and device for retransmission of signals of satellite radio navigation systems (SRNS) for remote monitoring of vehicle location are presented. A feature of this device is modulation of the pilot signal by a pseudo random code with identical parameters to the informational one, transmitted from the satellites. It allows us to provide the power balance of the retransmitted informational signal and a pilot signal. Also the use of the reserve SRNS informational channel for the transfer of the pilot signal results in a reduction of the frequency band.

In e-beam lithography technologies, a blur of an e-beam increases as the e-beam current increases, due to the CIE (Coulomb Interaction Effect). This phenomenon is significant in such writing strategies as block exposure or cell projection e-beam lithography where fine patterns must be delineated with large e-beam current. Resulting problems are resolution degradations and pattern size variations. This paper presents a method to incorporate the CIE into the PEC (Proximity Effect Correction) technique so that the pattern size variations due to CIE are corrected.
