In this paper, combined source-channel coding for a power and bandwidth constrained channel is studied, with application to progressive image transmission. For a given power constrained and bandwidth constrained Gaussian communication channel, we consider the optimum coded modulation scheme among a predetermined set of signaling constellations when the performance is measured by end-to-end average distortion. This scheme particularly fits progressive source coding in conjunction with unequal error protection.

In this paper, we will explain the usefulness of what we call the mutual information (MI) constellation. We will show how it can be used both in analysis and in design of codes. The MI constellation will be of special interest in case of in-line bit interleaving, since it is then very useful in the design of the outer code. The system considered is 2 bits/symbol serially concatenated trellis coded modulation (SCTCM) with XPSK signaling over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel.

This paper demonstrates the use of multiple-symbol differential detection in trellis coded differential M-ary phase shift keying modulation schemes over correlated flat Rayleigh fading channels. This technique exploits the statistics of the fading channels to improve the error performance of the system without sacrificing the advantage of the time diversity attribute of trellis coded modulation. Optimal metrics are obtained for the Viterbi decoder. By using a closed form analytical expression and computer simulations for bit error rate performance, the authors show that the technique is able to suppress the irreducible error floor associated with conventional differential TCM.< >

In Doppler radar for surveillance and remote sensing, the ambiguities in range/Doppler are usually solved by varying the pulse repetition frequency. In this paper, two alternative methods are discussed based on phase-coding and orthogonal waveforms. The first one distributes a phase code over a pulse sequence with only one phase step per pulse. The received pulses are correlated with the phase code sequence, and by varying the delay of the phase code, the subintervals in range are scanned and reflector responses outside the focused range interval become highly suppressed. The alternative method that was studied applies a set of near-orthogonal phase codes, which modulate the pulses transmitted. In the receiver, the different subintervals in range are scanned, or detected in parallel, by correlating the signal from the scene by the delayed code sequence of the pulse transmitted. Because orthogonal codes are used, a strong suppression is achieved for signals originating outside the focused subinterval in range.

The complex-valued collaborative coding multiple access (CV_CCMA) scheme has been proposed as a viable method, for enabling simultaneous transmission by multiple users over a common radio channel, without the use of orthogonal codes nor subdivisions in time or frequency. This paper investigates the use of forward error correction to improve the performance of CV_CCMA in Rayleigh fading channels. T-user M-PSK CV_CCMA schemes employing block coding are described. The simulation results show the significant gains achieved using short linear block codes and dual space diversity.

An expanded effort is underway to support the evolution of the UMTS standard to meet the rapidly developing needs associated with wireless Internet applications. The support of high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) is provided by means of a new, shared channel called high speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) which is enabled by a number of performance enhancing technologies such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), hybrid ARQ (HARQ), fat-pipe scheduling, fast cell selection (FCS) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna techniques. In this paper, the advantage of FCS is investigated. To avoid the difficulty in HARQ transmission-state synchronization, FCS is allowed only among the cells (sectors) belonging to the same base station. Two FCS approaches are compared in this paper. The user controlled cell selection (UCCS) selects the serving cell based only on the channel quality seen by the user. While a new-network controlled cell selection (NCCS) approach jointly considers channel quality and network loading. It is shown that FCS significantly improves the HSDPA performance at low mobility. Among the FCS schemes, NCCS is superior to UCCS when the load among the cells in the active set is unbalanced.

This paper explores a low-complexity decision feedback equalization/decoding scheme, which uses filter bank frequency-domain equalizer and noise prediction in feedforward and feedback filter, respectively. Its performance is evaluated with extended Vehicular A channel model of ITU-R in LDPC coded single-carrier modulation. Simulation results show that the equalization/decoding scheme with symbol-wise block interleaver can achieve a considerable performance improvement over linear equalizer. Moreover, its performance comparison to widely-used turbo equalizer approach is also included, showing minor performance degradation with considerably reduced complexity.

In this paper, coded modulation technique based on the use of convolutional self-doubly orthogonal codes (CSO 2 C) and threshold iterative decoding is presented. Two different methods of coded modulation are considered. The first approach is based on a conventional pragmatic scheme. In the second approach, all information bits are coded and a simpler Gray coding is used for the bit-to-symbol mapping. Simulation results indicate that for a bit error rate of 10 -5 , the pragmatic 8-PSK coded modulation scheme with R = 2/3 coding rate provides a coding gain of 3 dB as compared with the error performances of the uncoded QPSK system. The simulation results also demonstrate that by using the second approach, a larger coding gain of 4.5 dB is obtained when compared with uncoded QPSK modulation.

Multi-user detection allows for the efficient use of band-width in code-division multiple-access (CDMA) channels through mitigation of near-far effects and multiple-access noise limitations. Due to its inherent noise and multi-path immunity, CDMA multi-access is being considered as a platform for personal communication systems (PCS). As CDMA based digital communication networks proliferate, the need to determine the presence of a new user and integrate knowledge of this new user into the detection scheme becomes more important. The decorrelating detector is a linear multi-user detector that is asymptotically optimal in terms of near far resistance; however, in the presence of a new unknown user, performance of the decorrelator is severely degraded. Adaptive decorrelators are constructed which adaptively augment an existing conventional decorrelator to demodulate a new active user in addition to existing risers. Several likelihood ratio based schemes are proposed.

The serial search DS code acquisition in a nonselective time-variant channel is analyzed. The stationary random signal amplitude is supposed to be constant during each single/multiple dwell test interval and independent of that on any other test interval. The dependence of the mean acquisition time on the random amplitude is eliminated by averaging over the given amplitude distribution. As an example of the general concept, the application of the mean acquisition time of the double-dwell noncoherent detector for a Rayleigh distributed signal amplitude is evaluated.
