MIMO-OFDM is widely recognized today as a key combination of technologies to achieve high spectral efficiency and high link reliability over space and frequency selective wireless channels, at a reasonable hardware cost. Both OFDM and MIMO have a variety of modes of operation and parameters and for each channel state, users¿ requirements of data transmission and criterion of estimation performance, there is an optimal scheme and set of parameters based on channel state information. Adaptive switching between MIMO-OFDMA schemes yields significant capacity gains over fixed transmission schemes. A combination of modulation and coding scheme and MIMO method maximizes the throughput whilst satisfying a predefined average BER.

We combine spatial multiplexing with a multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system associated to a turbo coding (TC) scheme. MC-CDMA is likely to be a very promising access technique for future wireless communication systems. In fact, MC-CDMA exploits the advantages of both the multi-carrier modulation and code division multiple access (CDMA) technique. On the other hand, the capacity of a multi-antenna system can linearly increase with the minimum of transmit and receive antennas using spatial multiplexing. We study the concatenation of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems for N/sub t/ transmit and N/sub r/ receive antennas and MC-CDMA with a TC scheme. Simulation results are provided for different loads in order to demonstrate the efficiency of spatial multiplexing combined with the turbo channel coding scheme for a multiuser system based on MC-CDMA for both uncorrelated and correlated antenna systems.

The adaptive transmission jointly considering adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) has been applied to MIMO systems to provide high spectral efficiency and link robustness. However, the adaptive transmission requires knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) and in practice perfect CSI is rarely available. In this paper, under the condition of finite-length buffer, the queuing characteristics of the Zero-Forcing (ZF) detection MIMO systems combining with adaptive transmission in the presence of imperfect CSI are analyzed. We use Markov-chain-based analytical framework to investigate the performance of the systems and derive the close form expressions for the throughput, packet loss rate and average delay, from which we can maximize the overall system throughput under the specified QoS constraints through numerical search. The simulation results demonstrate the verification of the performance analysis.

We examine a trellis-coded 8-PSK scheme that uses a concatenated code consisting of a rate 2/3, 8-state turbo code (an inner code) and a single-parity-check product code (an outer code). Monte Carlo simulation shows that the concatenated code performs better than turbo code alone. When a turbo interleaver of 4096/spl times/2 bits is used, the Eb/No to obtain a frame-error rate of 10/sup -3/ is about 3.6 dB for the concatenated code, about 3.8 dB for the turbo code alone with an S-random interleaver (S=47), and more than 4.4 dB for the turbo code alone with a random interleaver. In the high signal-to-noise ratios region, a lower bit-error rate is observed with the concatenated code than with the turbo code alone. A concatenated code using a double-iterated decoding system will thus improve the BER and FER of turbo codes.

A differential cross-correlation cell ID identification algorithm is proposed for IEEE 802.16e OFDMA cellular system. First, we construct the downlink (DL) preamble structure and signal model with carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel effects. Next, in order to achieve the initial synchronization, a differential receiver with cross correlation for all preamble patterns is proposed to search cell ID. Simulation results confirm that the proposed structure is suitable for ITU fading channels and outperforms the conventional cell search system.

The authors describe a code-excited linear predictive (CELP) coder that was recently selected as the US government standard 4800-b/s voice coder. The coder has the capability for future expansion and is robust to channel errors and noisy environments. Listening tests and DRT (diagnostic rhyme test) and DAM (diagnostic acceptability measure) scores show that the decoder exceeds the performance of all government standard speech coders operating at rates below 16 kb/s and is comparable to 32-kb/s continuously-variable-slope delta modulated coders.< >

We discuss the performance of the multi-level codes for high density recording on magneto-optical (MO) disks. The performance of multi-level codes is compared with that of run-length limited (RLL) binary codes using the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) method. The simulations indicate that the multi-level codes have good performance in high density recording and that the PRML method produces little improvement in the performance of multi-level codes compared with those of binary-level codes.

In this paper, we present a transceiver design for a broadband multiuser-MIMO communication system, where the co-channel users are equipped with multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas. In particular, we propose a joint coded two-step interference cancellation scheme which effectively combats the effect of co-channel interference (CCI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) in multipath channels. To overcome the peak-to-average-power ratio limitation of multicarrier systems, the scheme employs single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) based modulation combined with time-reversed space-time block codes (TR-STBC). The receiver performs minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) interference suppression at the first stage, and then, CCI cancellation is implemented with a bank of single-user channel decoders. Also, forward error correction outer convolutional encoding, and random bit interleaving are used to correct the carrier in deep fades. To verify the utility of the proposed approach, the paper also includes two sets of average symbol error rate simulations for two different channel models. The first set is for a frequency selective quasi-static fading channel while the secondset is for a Rayleigh fading channel modeled by a modified Jakes' model, both of which confirm the advantage of the proposed scheme.

Multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) is a modulation scheme that combines the advantages of OFDM and CDMA to provide robustness against frequency selectivity in wireless channels. Arrayed MC-CDMA systems combine MC-CDMA and antenna array technology to harness the spatial and temporal 'signatures' of received signals, thus making it possible to realize high transmission rates envisioned for next generation wireless communications. Localized scattering, which occurs for each multipath, motivates the frequency selective wireless channel to be modelled as a diffused vector channel. In this paper, space-time diffused vector channels for arrayed MC-CDMA systems are modelled and analyzed. Simulation studies show that the use of this diffused channel modelling in arrayed MC-CDMA receivers yields better bit error rate (BER) performance than receivers that ignore the presence of spatial and/or temporal diffusion.

The authors propose the design of a coded transmission system for the terrestrial urban radio channel, with a 4 bit-spectral efficiency. They evaluated the performances of a Reed-Solomon coded 64-QAM modulation on a Rayleigh fading channel. Three decoding algorithms are considered: a hard decision and an erasure Berlekamp-Massey decoding algorithm and a soft decision maximum likelihood decoding algorithm. By computing the cutoff rate they found that when the spectral efficiency is not close to 6, the gain of soft decision decoding over erasure decoding and the gain of erasure decoding over hard decision decoding are not so large. However, this gain must increase when the spectral efficiency becomes closer to 6 bits.< >
