Two classes of simplified trellis decoding algorithms are defined and analyzed. Even with a significant simplification (several orders of magnitude) these algorithms yield an error probability which for large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is asymptotically the same as the one for Viterbi decoding, apart from a small, insignificant factor. Even for moderate to low SNRs the simplified methods have error probabilities comparable to those of the Viterbi algorithm. This shows that there is a great freedom in designing simplified trellis decoding algorithms, where many kinds of tradeoffs (simplicity vs. performance) can be made.< >

A novel adaptive scheduling algorithm for CDMA-based networks-on-chip is proposed. An orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code is combined with the dual round robin matching (DRRM) algorithm to obtain efficient usage of orthogonal codewords. The length of codewords is adjusted depending on how many active IP blocks have packets to send at any given time. In addition, pointers are maintained to perform the necessary input and output arbitration. SystemC simulation results demonstrate that our scheduling technique exhibits the fairness property.

In a coded digital communication system, the combination of the modulator, waveform channel, and demodulator can be considered as a discrete channel for communication from the encoder to the decoder, which act to combat errors between a transmitted message and its reproduced version at the receiver. We would like to design modulation schemes which present the "best" discrete channel to the encoder and decoder, resulting in an improved performance of the overall system. This is achieved by optimizing a suitable measure of performance of the communication channel. We use the cutoff-rate region [1] of a multiple-access channel with two senders and a single receiver as a measure of performance of the communication channel. The extension to the general multiple-access channel with M senders is straighforward, and the results are similar.

As bees and crystals (and people selling oranges in the market) know it for many years, lattices provide efficient structures for packing, covering, quantization and channel coding. In the recent years, interesting links were found between lattices and coding schemes for multi-terminal networks. This tutorial paper covers close to 20 years of my research in the area; of enjoying the beauty of lattice codes, and discovering their power in dithered quantization, dirty paper coding, Wyner-Ziv DPCM, modulo-lattice modulation, distributed interference cancelation, and more.

In this paper, differential modulation diversity (DMD) is introduced. This diversity scheme is based on diagonal signal constellations which have been previously proposed for differential space-time modulation (DSTM). DMD can exploit both space and time diversity and DSTM, which is a pure space diversity scheme, results as a special case. A low-complexity noncoherent receiver originally designed for DSTM is adapted to DMD and the power efficiency of DMD for spatially correlated Rayleigh fading and imperfect interleaving is investigated.

This paper presents a new TCP window size adjustment scheme for the automatic rate fallback (ARF) algorithm. The proposed scheme utilizes the information about radio usage monitored on the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer. Each station calculates the maximum available window size on each long-lived connection based on these information when the data transmission/reception rate is switched, and limits the maximum sending window size. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated and compared with that of standard TCP through several simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme enhances the transmission efficiency of TCP.

We show how to use EXIT charts for convergence prediction of a threefold serially concatenated system. The corresponding chart has three dimensions and allows us to appropriately select system parameters and to find an optimal schedule of decoding iterations between the three decoders of such a system. Convergence thresholds are obtained to determine the minimal signal-to-noise ratios for which convergence is possible. It turns out that threefold concatenated systems do not achieve any additional performance gain compared to suitably designed twofold systems. We conclude that a threefold concatenation should be considered only when the decoders cannot be chosen freely.

This paper proposes a gaze prediction model for open signed video content. A face detection algorithm is used to locate faces across each frame in both profile and frontal orientations. A grid-based likelihood ratio track before detect routine is used to predict the orientation of the signer's head, which allows the gaze location to be localised to either the signer or the inset. The face detections are then used to narrow down the gaze prediction further. The gaze predictor is able to predict the results of an eye tracking study with up to 95% accuracy, and an average accuracy of over 80%.

In this paper, we present two new feedback reduction schemes, namely the network mode selection-based feedback (NMF) and the user mode selection-based feedback (UMF), to reduce the feedback load needed for opportunistic scheduling in the OFDMA downlink system. The two schemes are designed to select either the selective feedback (SF) mode which feeds back the fine-grained condition of a part of the channels or the bit-map based feedback (BF) mode which feeds back the coarse-grained condition of all the channels using 1-bit for each channel, depending on the channel conditions of the users. Specifically, the NMF scheme makes the BS determine the more desirable feedback mode by predicting and comparing the average total throughputs of the two modes for the given statistical channel characteristics of the users. The UMF scheme makes each user determine its own feedback mode based on both its channel realization and the recommendation of the network. Numerical results reveal that the proposed NMF and UMF schemes achieve significant performance gain over the existing feedback reduction schemes with similar feedback load.
