We present field experiment results on multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in the E-UTRA downlink. We measured the throughput performance of 4×4 MIMO precoding with 1- to 4-stream transmission. Time variation characteristics of throughput, SINR, and antenna correlations are compared to evaluate the selection criteria for the number of streams. The throughput performance of 2×2 MIMO precoding are also evaluated and compared with the results of the 4×4 MIMO case. Based on the evaluation of the field experiment results, we verify that the throughput is maximized using 3- or 4-stream transmission. Furthermore, we verify that 2-stream transmission is also effective for 4×4 MIMO in an actual propagation environment, since high antenna correlation sometimes happens on which the throughput performance of 3- or 4-stream transmission is severely degraded. Evaluation results also show that the estimated gain of rank adaptation is about 11.6% for 4×4 MIMO and about 6% for 2×2 MIMO.

Wavelet packet decompositions based on tree structured 2-channel filter banks with conjugate quadrature filters (CQF) have found many applications in the area of audio coding. Their time-frequency tiling is the dual of the time-varying modulated lapped transforms (MLT). We present a new orthonormal wavelet packet basis, which is constructed by the frequency-varying MLT. These can be viewed as the direct analogy to time-varying transforms. In contrast to the classical decomposition, the new transform shows a good bandpass behaviour without strong spectral sidelobes. Hence, it is particularly useful for the coding of audio signals. For the signals examined the coding gain is higher than that obtained with cascaded CQF filter banks. A fast algorithm for the new wavelet packet transform is possible with a polyphase implementation for the required modulated lapped transforms. This algorithm exceeds a fast CQF based wavelet packet decomposition, especially with the high frequency resolution, which is necessary in audio coding.

For Rayleigh fading channels, the primary code design criterion for a trellis coded modulation scheme is to maximize its effective code length (ECL). This paper concerns the design of optimal (2,1) Z/sub 2/-convolutional encoders (CE) which, when combined with the continuous phase encoder (CPE) of CPFSK scheme, reaches the upper bound of ECL of a generic trellis coded modulation scheme. We develop sufficient conditions for the optimality of such a CE and the upper bound of the complexity for the test of these sufficient conditions is also shown.

A generic model of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) on a multipath Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is derived. A practical low-complexity trellis-based receiver performing iteratively channel estimation, multilayer coded data detection and channel decoding is introduced. The inner multilayer data detector, employing reduced-state techniques together with generalized per-survivor processing, presents two-fold advantages. It enables one to cope with severe channel intersymbol interference and allows the use of more transmit antennas than receive antennas. Simulations show that our approach can dramatically improve the downlink performance of time division multiple access (TDMA) systems with high order modulation, such as EDGE, keeping a reasonable complexity at the receiver side.

The Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) is the communication terminal of Link-16. JTIDS is a hybrid direct sequence/frequency-hopping spread spectrum system and features Reed-Solomon codes for channel coding, cyclic code-shift keying for 32-ary symbol modulation, minimum-shift keying for chip modulation, symbol interleaving, chip sequence scrambling and random jittering for transmission security, and a double-pulse structure for diversity. Assuming that coherent chip demodulation is practical, we investigate the probability of symbol error of a JTIDS/Link-16-type waveform for both the single- and the double-pulse structure transmitted over a slow, flat Nakagami fading channel in the presence of pulsed-noise interference (PNI) in this paper. In general, the results show that the double-pulse structure always outperforms the single-pulse structure, whether the PNI is present or not and whether the channel is fading or not. Furthermore, barrage noise interference has the most effect in degrading performance when signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is small. When SIR is large, PNI with a smaller fraction of time that interference is on causes the greatest degradation.

This paper proposes a bit-interleaved coded transmission with multilevel modulation for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. In the proposed system, multiple layers are encoded and interleaved together, using one encoder and one interleaver, and then mapped by hierarchical symbol mapping. A corresponding receiver structure is presented, where multiple layers can be decoupled by iterative MIMO detection and equalization with ordered successive interference cancellation (SIC) and full log-likelihood ratio (LLR). Full LLR provides reliable estimates of transmit signals, and significantly improves the performance of proposed multilevel modulation. Simulation results show that the proposed system has better performance than conventional modulation schemes such as bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and multilevel BICM (MLBICM).

A new peak-to-average power reduction approach for OFDM has been addressed. Two-dimensional pilot-symbol assisted modulation (2D-PSAM) is employed in coherent OFDM for channel estimation and it is based on inserting known symbols spreaded out throughout the 2D time-frequency grid. We show that these scattered symbols can also be employed to perform distortionless peak power reduction, with a negligible loss in data-rate. To reduce additional system complexity and side information, several suboptimal strategies are proposed. A comparison between the two schemes with different approaches to the joint design of pilot symbols for both channel estimation and peak power reduction, has also been carried out.

Iterative decoding is an efficient technique to overcome the disadvantage of Bit-Interleaved Coded modulation (BICM) over AWGN channels. In order to reduce the unnecessary iterations of the iterative decoding process, stopping criteria technique has been introduced. Since the iterative process of Bit-Interleaved Coded modulation with Iterative Decoding (BICM-ID) is proceeded between the demapper and the SISO decoder, not as the one of turbo-decoder which is proceeded between two component decoders, the minimum iteration number of BICM-ID is 2 when using conventional stopping criteria iterative schemes. To minimize the overall iteration number of the iterative decoding process and decrease the complexity of BICM-ID receiver, three simple iterative decoding schemes for BICM-ID, called simple CE (S-CE), simple SCR (S-SCR) and simple HDA (S-HDA) respectively, are proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes perform similar to the corresponding conventional ones and require less complexity, meanwhile, these proposed schemes perform almost the same as the Fixed iteration scheme with much less iterations. A GENIE scheme is included as the limit of all possible stopping criteria.

Some previous research has been done on the coherent serially concatenated coded MSK (SC-MSK) (V.F. Szeto et al., Sept. 1999). We propose an iterative noncoherent sequence detection (NSD) and decoding of SC-MSK based on the soft-output (SO) NSD (G. Colavolpe et al., Sept. 2000). Here, the exponentially decaying observation window (EDW) (R. Schober et al., Dec. 1999) is applied in SO-NSD, in place of the original rectangular observation window (RW). The SO-NSD with EDW can achieve comparable performance to that of the optimal and more complex noncoherent BCJR (N-BCJR) with RW (G. Colavolpe et al., Sept. 2000) in the iterative detection. Besides its use in AWGN channel, we also extend it to flat Rayleigh fading channel and derive the decoding metric without channel state information (CSI). The noncoherent SC-MSK is robust to smaller phase change in AWGN channel, and it also performs well in slow, flat Rayleigh fading channel.

An ultrasonic radiator has been developed to transmit data in water. The radiator consists of a thin rectangular blade and is excited by an AC signal applied to a pair of PET ceramic bars mounted on either side of the blade to develop flexural vibrations. The important feature of the system is the impedance mismatch between the material of the blade and water to which it is coupled. Direction of propagation is dictated by the wavelength coincidence condition. TCM (trellis coded modulation) coding and modulation has been applied using the operational frequency of the radiator as the carrier signal. This process which is the combination of coding and modulation of the signal has demonstrated the capabilities of a new underwater transmission system. A narrow beamwidth is the condition to obtain optimal power and performance. Simulation of the above system has been developed for the purpose of data telemetry in acoustic channels.< >
