This paper describes an application specific DSP core designed to be used in a CCITT 32 kbit/s G.726 Adaptive Differential Pulse Code modulation (ADPCM) codec. The instruction set architecture and the programming model of the DSP core were derived from an algorithm profile and complexity analysis and the core was implemented using VHDL and logic synthesis. Architecture design efforts were concentrated on finding the minimum amount of hardware resources which could implement the required functionality within the clock cycle count limit. The result is a Harvard architecture processor core which can be used to implement the 32 kbit/s G.726 ADPCM encoding/decoding functions with very modest external instruction and data memory requirements. In a typical configuration the processor can perform a full encode/decode operation for one sample in less than 1100 clock cycles. A gate-level implementation of less than 4000 gates of silicon area was created using logic synthesis for a standard cell technology.

This paper addresses the problem of low complexity iterative channel equalization in intersymbol interference channels using 8PSK modulation. In this paper, we apply a recently proposed low complexity iterative channel equalization technique, called the iterative decision feedback equalizer (IDFE) to a coded system using 8PSK modulation. In this system, the structure of the DFE has been modified to incorporate soft a priori information from previous iterations of the channel decoder in detection of the corrupted signal. As a result, in this algorithm complexity is only a linear function of channel memory length. Simulation results show that this technique, using a convolutional code with constraint length K=3 and interleaver size N=3000 over a known time invariant ISI channel achieves a remarkable gain of about 5 dB compared to the conventional DFE. Complexity evaluation also shows that the iterative DFE has advantages in terms of complexity compared to other types of turbo equalization techniques and is an appropriate candidate for EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) systems.

Proof-of-principle experiments of the CMOS readout technique with pixel-level code modulation for 2-D active imaging are demonstrated. The encoding readout technique can be advantageous for passive imaging systems, such as long-wave infrared imagers where there is a very large background flux. Another potential application for the encoding technique is high-speed passive imaging, particularly for applications that do not require extremely high amplitude resolution.

The IEEE 802.11 physical layer (PHY) supports multiple transmission rates with varying modulation and channel coding scheme. This feature allows the 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) to protect the throughput performance in face of dynamically changing channel condition. For instance, 802.11a standard has 8 PHY "modes" or rates. The procedure of selecting the best among the provided rates is called the rate adaptation. In this paper, we propose and implement at the device driver level a MAC snooping approach that overcomes the short-coming of the ACK-based approaches, which is robust against collisions. It uses information readily available on the 802.11 device driver level, in particular the number of disparate and active transmitters and the number of transmissions in the last time window. We do not use PHY measurements such as signal strength or SNR due to the weak correlation issue. Our experiments with the prototype implementation show that it is much more robust to congestion than existing algorithms, in particular the MIT SampleRate algorithm available in MADWiFi. We use the example of 802.11a in this paper, but the idea directly applies to faster 802.11 networks without any additional overhead.

The nonlinear multichannel modulation (particularly the CPM class) can better respect technological constraints on the transmitter (e.g. nonlinearity) due to its multidimensional waveform space which allows to decouple the second order properties of the constellation and the actual waveform shape (e.g. constant envelope). However the receiver processing complexity, especially in MIMO channel, is very high due to this waveform multidimensionality. We present an information waveform manifold (IWM) based preprocessing reducing the dimensionality of the problem. It is based on nonlinear projector, optional processing on IWM and decoding isomorphism with channel symbols expansion space. We show that the nonlinear projector is generally suboptimal, however the information loss comparing with optimal processing is negligible. The decoding isomorphism also directly separates the individual components of the received signal in MIMO channel

T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) system, is based on the Eureka-147 standard, provides various multimedia data services. However T-DMB needs more various services and higher throughput while maintaining reception. Therefore, this paper proposes advanced T-DMB system using the unequal error protection system, hierarchical modulation and double binary turbo code, while maintaining backward compatibility. As the simulation results, proposed advanced T- DMB system has coding gain of 2~6 dB compared to conventional T-DMB.

In this paper, a method for fast blind estimation of DS-SS signal is proposed which aims at the direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) signals with parameters unknown. Considering the characteristic that pseudo-random noise (PN) sequence modulates the information symbol, we make use of the method based on the second-order cyclic-cumulant to estimate the period of PN sequence, and then the method of segmented cross-correlation to estimate the synchronous start bit between the information symbols and the PN codes. On base of this, a method of multiple subsection cross-correlation average is used to estimate the PN sequence. Computer simulations show that the method can work well on signals at low signal noise ratio (SNR)

Impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transmission has recently become popular for data communications. In the new IEEE 802.15.4 a standard, IR-UWB modulation is mated with a concatenated coding scheme consisting of a Reed-Solomon and a convolutional encoder. While most of the available literature has been dedicated to the study of uncoded IR-UWB transmission, this paper is concerned with the performance analysis for IEEE 802.15.4 a compliant concatenated coded IR-UWB systems. In particular, a semi-analytical error-rate expressions for coherent RAKE detection with suboptimal multipath combining is presented. While first a single-user channel is assumed, in the second part of this paper this analysis is extended to include the effect of IR-UWB multiple access interference. To this end, a Gilbert-Elliot-type Markov interference model is adapted to the IEEE 802.15.4 a modulation format.

modulation via Fourier transform division multiplexing (FTDM) has been suggested for transmission over channels whose signal-to-noise ratios, as functions of frequency, are far from flat. Original designs following the classical water-pouring theorem left a large gap between the theoretical promise of the method and the actual rates achieved.
