Space-Time coding and MIMO wireless systems are two recent technological breakthroughs in modern communications. The promises of information theoretic MIMO analysis has ignited the study of related areas such as MIMO channel modeling, Space-Time coding, Space-Time signal processing, etc. One of the most popular models because of its simplicity is the Kronecker mode1. In this paper we analyze the Alamouti coding scheme and study the impact of antenna correlation for this scheme using BPSK modulation and a 2 x 2 MIMO channeI. The MIMO Kronecker model was used in the simulation for various spatial correlation factors and the associated Doppler shifts in each branch. The results in this paper are new in this context and have not been found elsewhere.

In this paper we present reduced-complexity high-performance iterative receivers for single-user MIMO systems that employ OFDM with bit-interleaved coded modulation. The proposed inner-outer decoder structures exploit the Soft-Output M algorithm (SOMA) to calculate bit-likelihood estimates via a limited search on a tree. A key element of the proposed designs is the way the SOMA front-end adapts at each iteration to new extrinsic information. This front-end defines the tree, both in terms of the order in which symbols are considered, as well as in terms of the subspaces used in the likelihood calculations at each depth in the tree. The proposed SOMA front-ends are different from the conventional QR-decomposition front-ends and provide a systematic way to adapt both the order and the subspaces at each iteration in an iterative decoding structure. Simulations for 4 × 4 16 QAM systems show that the proposed iterative receivers can yield significant performance gains over receivers using non-adaptive conventional front-ends.

Direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS/SS) system has been extensively studied for land mobile communications because of the notable and attractive features such as its robustness and applicability to code division multiple access (CDMA). We propose a DS/SS modulation method which employs Gaussian-filtered minimum-shift-keying (GMSK) and permits simple code acquisition. The modulated signal can be demodulated by a four-phase correlator which can obtain the correlation value of the received signal even if a phase difference between the transmitter and the receiver exists. The bit error performance obtained by the hardware experiments ensures the validity of this modulation method.

A variable blocksize double predictor differential pulse code modulation (VBDP-DPCM) image coding algorithm is utilized for image transmission over Rayleigh fading channels. Quadtree segmentation algorithm is applied to divide a given digital image into segments of variable size, square blocks, in which the nonstationary statistical characteristics of the given image source can be better exploited. Each variable blocksize sub-image is then applied the double predictor DPCM (DP-DPCM) coding scheme to further reduce the quantization error and produce a better data compression ratio than that of a DPCM scheme. To improve the system performance for transmitting VBDP-DPCM encoded images over wireless fading channel, we have adopted the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation as well as a channel coding algorithm in this study. The convolutional encoder and maximum-likelihood Viterbi hard decision decoder are applied to protect the transmitted source data and to reduce bit error rate (BER) in fading channel. Performance of this VBDP-DPCM image transmission system over Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated in this research.

A novel Adaptive Predictor Differential Pulse Code modulation (DPCM) technique has been developed in which the predictor, rather than the quantizer, is adapted. The z-plane pole locations are adjusted on a sample-by-sample basis, tuning the predictor to track the instantaneous frequency of the input speech waveform. The adaptive algorithm employs a simple estimate of the correlation coefficient of the input signal, based upon the three previous samples. The system has been proven operable at bit rates as low as 8 kbs, resulting in improved performance over more conventional DPCM systems. Robust performance has been obtained with bauded data signals as well as speech signals with input SNRs as low as 0 dB, and under conditions of crosstalk as high as 0 dB relative to input speech.

To enable us to affordably teach software defined radio at the undergraduate level, we developed a low cost system that allows realistic hardware projects and demonstrations. This new board connects a Texas Instruments C67x DSP starter kit (DSK) to an analog devices AD9857 quadrature modulator. This modulator is capable of operating at up to 200 million samples per second (MS/s), with a carrier (or intermediate frequency) of up to 80 MHz. Baseband 14-bit in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) data are presented to the modulator, which can be programmed to interpolate the data at rates from 4x to 252x. The AD9857 is interfaced to the DSK using an Altera Cyclone FPGA which provides queuing of the I/Q data and the logic for control/programming of the modulator. This paper describes the associated hardware and software issues and briefly describes recommended classroom use.

The performance of quasi-synchronous CDMA (QS-CDMA) system, which can allow an increased timing error in synchronized access, is discussed. The QS-sequences are selected from an M-sequence set or a Gold-sequence set considering the cross-correlation property, and the average BER is calculated for the system with QS-sequences. As a result, the average BER of the system with QS-sequences is improved considerably compared with asynchronous CDMA when the access timing error is within a few chip durations.< >
