The effect of nonlinear amplification on CDMA waveforms is investigated. Variations in the gain of the power amplifier (PA) in response to changes in the input power are used as a measure of the nonlinearity. The relationship between Walsh code selection, data sequences, PN sequences, and the wave-shaping filter in the generation of PA gain errors is discussed. An approach for reducing spectral regrowth by introducing correlations between data sequences within different Walsh code channels is proposed.

A novel approach to programmable mixed-signal VLSI is presented that uses a pulse width modulated digital signal to encode analogue signal information. Signal communication between programmable analogue (and digital) signal processing cells is performed using this Palmo signal representation. A linear, programmable, voltage mode analogue CMOS Palmo cell is presented. Results from 1st, 2nd and 3rd order analogue Palmo filters, a 24 tap FIR Palmo filter, and a Palmo sigma-delta analogue-to-digital converter are presented.

The NLC (Next Linear Collider) development effort continues to move forward from its initial Zero Design Report (ZDR). A major component of the NLC is the high power RF source, which is designed around the technology of the klystron. The NLC is conceptualized around 75 MW, PPM (periodic permanent magnet) focused klystrons and will use approximately 3300 klystrons in each of the two main linacs. Simple analysis has shown that operating two klystrons per modulator has both economic and configuration advantages. The physical design of the modulators is an integral part of the design of the tunnels, etc. Klystron spacing is dictated by the pulse compression regime. This paper presents the to-date results of the investigation efforts in energy storage, pulse transformers and efficiency. Future plans, including new technologies to pursue are discussed. SLAC is also continuously looking for new and novel approaches to either the modulator components or the overall modulator approach. SLAC and the DOE are attempting to use the SBIR program to help with industry development of the needed components and new ideas.

This study examined the effect of normal development and vigilance state on the modulation of dentate granule cell activity in the freely moving rat at 15, 30 and 90 days of age across three vigilance states: quiet waking (QW), slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Using paired-pulse techniques, the population spike amplitude of the first pulse (PSA1) and the paired-pulse index (PPI) were obtained for the dentate evoked field potentials elicited by the stimulation of the medial perforant path. The PSA1 values obtained for the 90-day old animals were significantly greater during SWS than during QW or REM sleep. PSA1 values obtained for the 15- and 30-day old animals, however, were found to be significantly different than those obtained for adult animals. Transmission through the first leg of the hippocampal trisynaptic circuit appeared to be more efficient during REM sleep at 15 days of age and then, in adulthood, to be greater during SWS. PPI values obtained at 15, 30 and 90 days of age, were altered by normal ontogeny, but not by vigilance state. PPI values were significantly different as a result of normal development with 15-day old animals exhibiting significantly less early and late inhibition, and little facilitation when compared to the 90-day old adult rats. These changes in the paired-pulse index (PPI) as well as those in PSA1, therefore, provide measures of the modulation of dentate granule cell activity as the animal matures.

The US Navy telesonar RDT&E effort is advancing methods for asynchronous, multi-access, networked communications in littoral waters. The goal is to provide wireless, battery-powered connectivity in adverse, shallow-water channels while maintaining a low probability of counter-detection. Telesonar type-B signaling combines powerful, non-binary convolutional error-correction coding, M-ary frequency-shift-keying (MFSK) modulation, and sophisticated frequency hopping. Non-coherent demodulation and sequential decoding provides reception at low signal-to-noise levels. The link protocol includes low-bit-rate handshaking to accommodate energy-conserving sleep modes and to achieve secure addressing, power control, channel characterization, and prioritization. Once the terminals have synchronized at the low bit rate, the message is transmitted with a bit rate and modulation appropriate for the prevailing channel. Power control ensures that messages are received with sufficient, but not excessive SNR. Frequency hopped spread-spectrum transmission supports asynchronous, code-division multiple access (CDMA) networking. Our analyses indicate that unauthorized observers require at least 10 dB more signal energy for detection than will the intended receiver.

A new method for evaluating radiowave propagation environments is proposed. The technique yields accurate estimation of 3-D scattering path by using dual-frequency holography method and amplitude compensation based on the exact Green's function. Some results of the computer simulation and the experiment are presented to demonstrate the validity and the accuracy of the proposed method.

To summarize, the described WDM-APON (WDM ATM-PON) technique which multiplexes four standard 622/155 Mbit/s APON systems over an amplified 1:64 split ODN, with approximately 40 customer premises connected to one ONU, enables a maximum available capacity per IUP of400 kbit/s downstream and 100 kbit/s upstream and peak rates of 32 Mbit/s downstream and 8 Mbit/s upstream. The total number of customers that can be connected to this system is approximately 2400. The AM-CATV service can be delivered to all customers connected.

This paper proposes a coded modulation scheme for transmission of two classes of information on a broadcast AWGN channel. The scheme is based on multilevel coding with a nonstandard partition of a 32-QAM constellation. The QAM constellation consists of four groups of 8-PSK subconstellations instead of 8-QAM subconstellations. This results in a constellation with reduced peak-to-average power ratio. As component codes of the multilevel construction only one binary convolutional code and a punctured version of it are used. The nonstandard partition allows parallel decoding of the component codes in a multistage decoding algorithm. The error performance of the proposed scheme is obtained. In comparison with Wei's scheme with similar parameters, the proposed scheme achieves higher coding gains for the most important class at the cost of a small degradation in performance for the less important class. Although only results for a specific constellation are presented, the design principles can be easily extended to other QAM constellations.

This paper describes the design of a simple building block for applications in the area of digital communication. The simple building block functions mainly as a digitally programmable oscillator (DPO) extendable to work as a BFSK modulator. The DPO is designed using an LM 565 PLL chip, the centre frequency of the VCO within which is controlled by an 8031 microcontroller using binary weighted switched programmable resistor array (BWSPRA) implemented by CMOS CD 4066 switches and binary weighted resistors. Good quality square and triangular waves were obtained from the block whose frequencies in the range of 90 kHz to 680 kHz were varied digitally. The incorporation of a sine shaper with the simple building block along with a buffer and amplifier provided sinusoidal DPO. In the design extension of the simple sinusoidal DPO to BFSK modulator the mark and the space frequencies were obtained by effectively switching a single resistor. The digital base band signal was a PN sequence of length 7 generated by the 8031 microcontroller. An assembly language program had been developed. Good quality BFSK output was obtained with good phase continuity.
