Carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) is a bandwidth efficient modulation and line coding scheme that has been accepted by various standardization bodies as the means to accomplish the task of high speed data transfer over voice grade unshielded twisted pair copper cable in digital subscriber line (DSL) applications. This paper considers the design of finite length digital filters for CAP receivers. It is shown that, with an appropriate design strategy, it is possible to obtain good performance from short length FIR filters.

A fully integrated baseband processor suitable for wireless personal communications is presented. The universal architecture of the integrated circuit is demonstrated by using it to create baseband modulation signals that are Gaussian and Nyquist filtered. These baseband drive signals are created to meet present worldwide standards in cellular and cordless telephony including Digital European Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), American and Japanese Digital Cellular (ADC/JDC), Japanese Personal Handy Phone (PHP), and Groupe Speciale Mobile (GSM) cellular telephony in Europe. The communication parameters in mobile ad-hoc networks, such as the distance between nodes, channel characteristics and user demands, can vary quickly. Using traditional design techniques and creating a static physical layer designed to meet worst case conditions results in poor performance and resource utilization under most operating conditions. Software radios, which implement their physical layer processing in software, provide a solution to this problem by enabling the physical layer to be modified in a way that best meets the current conditions. This paper describes the initial work on a software radio-based ad-hoc network that allows the physical layer to be modified on a per packet basis.

Asia Cellular Satellite System (ACeS) is a $900 million fully financed project that uses two A2100AX geo satellites manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The services of the original design are voice, data, fax and paging throughout Southeast Asia, China and India. In this paper, we present a supplementary design, which called ACeS Multi-media System (AMS), for the original ACeS to offer some more narrow-band multi-media services such as Internet, Intranet and ISDN services to mobile or fixed users thus to make it more competitive in the market. The paper discusses the system description, frame/burst formats of satellite transmission links, design of the combining scheme of turbo codes and QAM modulation etc. This system can also be modified for military communications.

The mobile user objective system (MUOS) uses WCDMA as a basis for its waveform definition. This paper deals with the quasi-analytic method of WCDMA physical layer simulation that has been used extensively for performance simulation, model development for system simulation and development of signal processing algorithms on the MUOS project. Quasi-analytic method offers speedup factors, relative to conventional waveform simulation, of 100x or more. It is shown here that quasi-analytic can also be very accurate.

An adaptive turbo coded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with outdated channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is proposed and investigated with a focus on the multiplexing gain and the bit error rate (BER) performance. By incorporating the rate-compatible punctured turbo codes (RCPTCs) into the adaptive modulation MIMO system, the adaptive turbo coded MIMO system is shown to achieve a near-full multiplexing gain as well as a robust BER performance against the CSI feedback delay.

This paper presents a concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control as applied to a spread spectrum multiple access system. A system model is proposed that allows one to apply modulation code (block) and a pseudo-noise (PN) spreading sequence to the data symbols to be transmitted. Gold sequences are employed for the purpose of PN spreading. Some good inner codes were chosen from Kasami (1990). Performance of those codes in an additive Gaussian noise channel is investigated with 5-30 users transmitting simultaneously. The performance of the system for coded 8-PSK were compared with uncoded QPSK under similar environment. The coded modulation scheme showed significant performance improvement with little or no bandwidth increase. The short modulation code is used as the inner code and a relatively powerful Reed-Solomon (RS) code is used as the outer code. Soft decision Viterbi decoding can be used for inner code. The proposed scheme is attractive for high speed satellite communications for file transfer applications where great reliability is desired.< >

Turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM) invented by Patrick Robertson adapted the bandwidth efficiency of TCM and iterative decoding of turbo codes and presented better performance without bandwidth expansion [P. Robertson et al., 1996]. But TTCM has a difficulty of implementing a hardware owing to decoder complexity. So, we need efficient scheduling and date storage management. Trellis Code modulation (TCM) has been widely used because it can obtain 2.55/spl sim/7.37 dB coding gain without bandwidth expansion or reduction of the effective information rates. Since Viterbi decoder plays an important role in the realization of HDTV system, we conduct the research and development on integration of Viterbi decoder. This paper proposes a new VLSI design of Viterbi decoder using ASIPs based on hardware/software co-design idea. It reduces the total design time and enhances the reliability of VLSI. We have successfully used this method for the design of Viterbi decoder in the ASTC-HDTV receiver chip.
