In this paper, we investigate the performance of MC-CDMA with bi-orthogonal keying employing Generalized Symbol-rate-increased (GSRI) Pragmatic Adaptive Trellis Coded modulation (ATCM). It is advantageous that the GSRI TC-MPSK can arbitrarily set the bandwidth expansion ratio (coding rate) and higher coding gain than the conventional pragmatic TCM scheme can be obtained. By changing the modulation scheme and the bandwidth expansion ratio, this scheme can optimize the performance according to the channel conditions. The performance evaluations by simulations on an AWGN channel and multi-path fading channels are presented. It is shown that the proposed scheme has remarkable throughput performance than that of the conventional scheme.

An overview of modulation and coding techniques commonly used in wireless communications is given. In addition to the tutorial presentation, reference is made to a number of papers on modulation and coding options in environments typical of the land mobile channel. The characteristics of the mobile wireless channel make for a challenging design of communication systems that, in addition to the demand for good power and bandwidth efficiencies, must cope with the various degradations encountered such as adjacent channel interference, cochannel interference, fading, and multipath.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive scheme that changes the modulation mode and the space-time block code (STBC) pattern for a space-time block coded (STBCed) system with transmit antenna selection. This scheme aims to increase the transmission throughput at certain target bit error rate (BER) with variable transmission power. Simulation results have shown that there is a trade-off between the average spectral efficiency (ASE) and BER performances. The ASE and BER can be adjusted by several parameters such as the transmission power, receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold values to meet the requirement

We propose a precoding strategy which controls amplitude and phase of receiving signals to improve throughput for two-stage bidirectional relaying. We consider the case when the nodes know channel state information (CSI) and can adopt adaptive modulation techniques. We introduce a novel scheme termed adaptive modulation and network coding (AMNC), which jointly optimizes modulations and network coding based on the CSI. For dynamic bit loading and power allocation, we propose a practical time-sharing method called the segmented precoding, in which a packet is split into several sub-packets, and a set of modulation and network coding is optimized in conjunction with amplitude and phase controls for each sub-packet. It is demonstrated that our proposed scheme can offer a significant improvement of achievable throughput for two-way relaying.

Adaptive modulation and coding is a commonly used technique to improve throughput in wireless system. Due to the delay in channel condition feedbacks, the actual channel condition may change at the time of transmission and results in capacity loss. In this paper, we establish a model to analyze the capacity loss due to channel condition feedback delay. Simulation results show that our approach is more accurate to calculate the capacity loss, compared to traditional K-step Markov approach. The results can be used to design channel update frequency adaptive to channel conditions and diversity reception.

Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) has gained a lot of attention in the research targeting for the standardization of the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA). The idea is to adapt the transmission to the fast changing channel conditions by the use of different modulation and coding schemes (MCS). In this paper, an algorithm is presented for the AMC technique in the HSDPA concept with multicode transmission, and the mathematical analysis of this algorithm is given. Furthermore, a scheduling algorithm is introduced in which the terminal in a queue with the best expected carrier-to-interference ratio (C/I) is selected for the transmission interval. Such maximum C/I scheduling with the AMC and multicode transmission is anticipated to increase the throughput. In this paper, the numerical results of the analysis are compared to the respective results obtained by the simulations.

We consider the problem of performing adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) in dual-hop transmission systems with regenerative relaying. In particular, we consider a scenario where the AMC on both hops is done independently of each other, thus requiring a potential buffering of data packets at the relay station before they can be forwarded to the actual destination. In this regard, we propose that both the current channel conditions as well as the current buffer filling level are taken into account in the AMC mode selection, so that buffer overflows at the relay station can be completely avoided. We thoroughly analyze our scheme by means of a finite-state Markov model, based on which we derive various different performance measures, such as the average transmission efficiency or the average transmission delay.

Communication devices that employ adaptive transmission protocols can exploit good channel conditions to increase throughput and compensate for poor channels to enhance survivability. We examine the performance of a protocol for the combined adaptation of the modulation, error-control-code, and transmitter power in high-rate direct-sequence spread-spectrum systems. The protocol requires only simple statistics that are obtained easily from the demodulator and decoder, and only a few bits of feedback are required in each acknowledgment packet.

Linear chip equalizers designed especially for the downlink have been a subject of extensive research and various methods have been proposed. In this paper, we consider the equalization problem in adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) system. An inherent feature of an AMC system is a high reliability of control information used for modulation type and coding rate signaling. We propose a linear equalization scheme exploiting this feature. The performance of the method is evaluated in HSDPA 3G cellular link.

The flexibility of WiMAX framework offers new dimensions for cross-layer optimization and can be exploited to optimize the application performance. This article focuses on identifiers that have direct impact on quality of service (QoS)and effect of such identifiers is evaluated through computer simulation using OPNET Modeler 14.5 Wireless Suite. In this paper we have used advanced WiMAX features such as adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), automatic repeat request (ARQ) and hybrid-ARQ to tune the WiMAX network MAC layer such that its adaptation improves both capacity and delay (thus optimize the performance). ARQ is treated as higher layer to HARQ. HARQ gives up after maximum retransmissions. HARQ performs fast retransmissions and ARQ takes over in cases HARQ fails after multiple retransmissions. This gives an added layer of protection to data. HARQ is proved to be most suitable (when used with aggressive modulation and coding) for WiMAX due to its hybrid nature as it takes into account both the MAC and link layer. Using ARQ in conjunction with HARQ gives slight improvement in BLER (Block Error Rate) but at the expense of high UL frame utilization.
