Earlier studies have indicated that, the temperature distribution in the urban area is significantly warmer than its surrounding suburban areas. The process of urbanization has created urban heat island (UHI). As a city expands, trees are cut down to accommodate commercial development, industrial areas, roads, and suburban growth. Trees or green areas normally play vital role mitigating the UHI effects especially in regulating high temperature in saturated urban areas. This study attempts to assess the effects of vegetation growth on land surface temperature (LST) distribution in urban areas. rea within the City of Shah Alam, Selangor has been selected as the study area. Land use/land cover and LST maps of two different dates are generated from Landsat 5 TM images of the year 1991 and 2009. Only five major land cover classes are considered in this study. mono-window algorithm is used to generate the LST maps. Landsat 5 TM images are also used to generate the NDVI maps. Results from this study have shown that there are significant land use changes within the study area. Although the conversion of green areas into residential and commercial areas significantly increase the LST, matured trees will help to mitigate the effects of UHI

This paper takes land surface temperature as main indicator of urban thermal environment. Using the TM images of September 22, 2010, Harbin city, we analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of land surface temperature by mono-window algorithm. The results can be summarized as follows. The land surface temperature of estimation in Harbin City was between 9 to 27 degrees C. According to temperature gradient of different colors, urban land surface temperature was significantly higher than the suburbs in Harbin, and there were a few places, that was, high temperature and low temperature area showed obvious heat island effect. Strong heat island area were in the multiple center, distributed in DaoWai District, Nangang District and along the railway. From the faubourgs to the downtown area, the proportion of heat island increased gradually, the more strong the heat island effect was in the area located in the centre. From the point of the cause of heat island distribution in Harbin city, urban construction, population growth and real estate development were the main influence factors. The results of the study has important reference value for improving ecological environment of Harbin City, and mitigating urban heat island effect.

An algorithm for retrieval of surface net radiation with Landsat TM/ETM+ data was developed in two parts in this study. First of all, net short wave radiation was computed with an improved algorithm for atmospheric correction based on dark object scheme associated with topographic information of the target site to account for the topographic affect on radiant regimes, and then a thermal radiant transfer model for accurate estimation of net long wave radiation over mountainous region by using surface temperature derived from the extended mono-window algorithm to integrate with surface energy balance equations was established. The thermal radiation from surrounding surface thus can be estimated, and atmospheric downward long wave radiation was calculated by means of an empirical formula related to surface temperature. With these two terms, Pixel based surface net radiation can be obtained. An evident advantage of this model is that only two atmospheric parameters, i.e. atmospheric mean effective temperature and surface temperature, are needed. The proposed approach was experimentally applied to a mountainous region located in the Hanjiang Basin, south western China. 6S code was utilized to the Landsat ETM+ image acquired over the region to simulate the surface and atmospheric radiative parameters under different geographic zones at selected climatic conditions to examine the performance of the proposed model. It was suggested that the maximum error in albedo extraction by the,proposed algorithm is about 17% with mean error less than 10%, the maximum error in retrieved short wave net radiation and long wave net radiation is about 15% and 12% with mean error less than about 11% and 9% respectively, which suggested the proposed approach an valid and operational mean in quantitative reversion of surface long wave radiation with satisfied accuracy.

The urban heat island is a phenomenon that the atmosphere temperature of the sky of the city near the ground is higher than the one outside the city, and it has business with the land use. Based on the mono-window algorithm, the urban surface temperature of two imagines is retrieved by using of the Landsat TM data. The urban temperature is divided into five classes according to the mean-standard deviation, in which the first two classes are considered as the urban heat island. The geostatistics is used to analyze the change tend of the urban heat island and its centre of gravity. Then the images are extracted through a multi-step hierarchical classification method. Based on ArcGIS, the relationship of the land use and the surface temperature is analyzed. And the results show that the area of urban heat island increases and the trend of island expansion changes. The temperatures of different types land use are different and change as time goes by.

The land surface temperature is an important parameter to hydrology and meteorology, it affects the exchange of sensible and latent heats between atmosphere, sea and land, and it can not be lack in many research fields. To retrieve land surface temperature exactly and quantificationally will promote the development of research areas such as drought forecasting crop yield estimating numerical weather forecast, global climate change and carbon balance. Therefore, retrieval of land surface temperature using thermal infrared remote sensing becomes one of the most important tasks in quantificational remote sensing study. The TM images are used in this article, which were recorded in June 11, 2001 over Nakchu area in Tibetan Plateau, to calculate the land surface temperature. The natural surface is classified based on information of remote sensing (snow, water and other land surface) and relevant information of geography, then the emissivity can be dealt with by each surface type in different way. Last, the land surface temperature is inversed by mono-window algorithm. The result show that the derived regional distributions of the the land surface temperature for the whole mesoscale area is agreed with the land surface status very well.

In this paper, The retrieval model of water surface temperature is studied on the base on ASTER Thermal Infrared Multispectral data. The model of the radiation brightness switching, water surface brightness temperature and water surface temperature are constituted for the ASTER thermal infrared Multispectral TIR. The practical model base on the mono-window algorithm is detruded to be fit for the temperature retrieval on the water surface temperature, it need not estimate the temperature parameter. Not only simplifies the regression estimate but also increases the retrieval precision of the mono-window algorithm and reliability. Many costal regions in China are confronted with challenging problems of limited land resources and increasing population. Saline lands, tidelands and wetlands have been enclosed for agricultural land uses and urbanization buffer zones under a series of reclamation programs. A combined approach of remote sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) was used in this study to identify the impact on Land Surface Temperature (LST) due to land use/cover change. We analyzed the impacts of LUCC (Land Use and Land Cover Change) on LST in Laizou Bay plain in different years. The results showed that land use types of culturing water increased significantly, correspondingly the area of grass land and salt land have a substantial reduction, and that of urban and rural settlements increased considerably. We retrieved the land surface temperature of two years using the method of Qin Zhihao's mono-windows algorithm. Then we analyzed the temperature change on different kinds of land use. We find different types of land use have different responses on temperature change. To sum up, there are strong correlations between LUC and LST.

With the globe climate warming and the extension of urban area, urban heat island has become a serious problem of urban environment. How to effectively monitor the structure and the change of urban heart island is becoming the focus of research on urban environment. Taking the urban core area of Chongqing as the research object, this paper uses Landsat TM/ETM+ imageries in 1988, 2001 and 2006, as well as the observing data of climate station, to study the urban ground temperature. The retrieve method of ground temperature is discussed, including mono-window algorithm, and the process how to get the four parameters of the algorithm. The retrieved ground temperature is standardized with extremum and classified into five temperature zones. The buffer analysis is carried out to detect the spatial structure and its change of urban heart island. The study shows that the character of heart island in Chongqing is great different from that in plain cities. Owing to the effect of special terrain of Chongqing, the heart island has clear hierarchy. The study also shows that the intension and extension of hear island is greatly enlarged from 1988 to 2006 due to the outspread of urban area.
