Two modifications to a robust block-by-block motion estimation algorithm for use in an interframe coding strategy are described. These modifications significantly reduce the computation required to obtain the motion vectors and the amount of overhead information that has to be transmitted, with a negligible reduction in the performance of the algorithm.

An improved method for the TZSearch fast motion estimation algorithm in the Joint Multi-view Video Coding (JMVC) is proposed in this work. It is based on early terminating the calculation of Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) and increasing the number of predicted motion vectors to reduce the inter-view redundancy and save the encoding time. Experimental results show that the proposed method has much more reduction in encoding time than the original TZSearch method in the JMVC, under the conditions of the encoding bit-rate and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) barely changed.

This paper reports our study of a novel motion estimation algorithm based on global and local compensability analysis. The spatial correlation of motion field is used to reduce the burden of estimation computation and extra bit rate for motion vectors. Experimental results show that this algorithm is more efficient than the conventional methods, especially for temporal activity regions.

Block matching is a widely used motion estimation algorithm in current video systems, Among typical searching strategies, the full search scheme provides better precision and regular data flow as well as higher parallelism, a characteristic that is advantageous for VLSI implementation, However, the huge computation load incurred by full search results in high cost, especially in high pixel rate applications, Since block matching algorithm is used in a wide range of pixel rates, an architecture that is cascadable and offers variable computing power is promising, In the first part of this paper, an approach based on dependence graph (DG) is proposed to analyze the operation sequence and data flow of full search block matching. The approach employs a transformation on DG's, called slice and tile, to produce different forms of DG's, Through this technique, most existing architectures can be represented in graphs for analysis, and new architectures can be found, In the second part of this paper, a new architecture is presented that features cascadable modules of processing elements (PE's) with simple interconnection. Therefore, flexibility in computing power is available. The other advantages include variable sizes of the search area and 100% PE utilization, These characteristics offer great flexibility and efficiency for different applications. This architecture is implemented with thirty-two PE's in one chip that consists of 102 K transistors.

High resolution and high refresh rate increase the pressure of wide transmission. Usually, video compression is used to solve this problem. However, traditional video compression methods cannot be performed in bit-plane, which will increase the cost of storage area. For this reason, this paper first introduces a bit just noticeable difference (BJND) model based on bit-plane. By analyzing the relationship between the bit-plane, frequency and eccentricity, the bit just noticeable difference threshold of viewpoint is calculated. Finally, the just noticeable difference model applied to bit-plane is obtained. Then this paper proposes a video compression scheme based on bit motion estimation algorithm, which optimizes the search range of motionestimation into two small rhombuses of time dimension and gray-scale dimension. According to human visual system and probability statistical analysis, supplementary matching blocks are added to replace residual data, so that the compression ratio will be constant. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has the best comprehensive effect on the compression of the lower five-bit plane. The compression ratio is 1.385, the data transmission is constant, and there is no obvious difference between the restored image and the original image, which conforms to the intuitive perception of the human eye.
