In this paper, practical utilization of multiple distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are able to conduct group-specific operations, for multi-group multicasting systems is investigated. To tackle the inter-group interference issue in the multi-group multicasting systems, the block diagonalization (BD)-based beamforming is considered first. Without any inter-group interference after the BD operation, the multiple distributed RISs are operated to maximize the minimum rate for each group. Since the computational complexity of the BD-based beamforming can be too high, a multicasting tailored zero-forcing (MTZF) beamforming technique is proposed to efficiently suppress the inter-group interference, and the novel design for the multiple RISs that makes up for the inevitable loss of MTZF beamforming is also described. Effective closed-form solutions for the loss minimizing RIS operations are obtained with basic linear operations, making the proposed MTZF beamforming-based RIS design highly practical. Numerical results show that the BD-based approach has ability to achieve high sum-rate, but it is useful only when the base station deploys large antenna arrays. Even with the small number of antennas, the MTZF beamforming-based approach outperforms the other schemes in terms of the sum-rate while the technique requires low computational complexity. The results also prove that the proposed techniques can work with the minimum rate requirement for each group.

In this letter, precoding for max-min fairness (MMF) for multi-group multicasting with a common message is studied. The MMF problem is converted into a weighted mean square error minimization problem. A rate-splitting solution is proposed. In rate-splitting, multicast messages for each group are divided into private and common parts, and these common parts, together with the original common message are combined as a super common message. This super common message is superposed on or concatenated to the private multicast data vector, or it is transmitted via a mixed scheme. Simulations show that RS demonstrates significant gains especially in overloaded systems.

Pilot-Aided Distributed multi-group multicast Precoding Design for Cell-Free Massive MIMO

We propose fully distributed multi-group multicast precoding designs for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with modest training overhead. We target the minimization of the sum of the maximum mean squared errors (MSEs) over the multicast groups, which is then approximated with a weighted sum MSE minimization to simplify the computation and signaling. To design the joint network-wide multi-group multicast precoders at the base stations (BSs) and the combiners at the user equipments (UEs) in a fully distributed fashion, we adopt an iterative bi-directional training scheme with UE- and/or group-specific precoded uplink pilots and group-specific precoded downlink pilots. To this end, we introduce a new group-specific over-the-air uplink training resource that entirely eliminates the need for backhaul signaling for the channel state information (CSI) exchange. The precoders are optimized locally at each BS by means of either best-response or gradient-based updates, and the convergence of the two approaches is analyzed with respect to the centralized implementation with perfect CSI. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed distributed methods greatly outperform conventional cell-free massive MIMO precoding designs that rely solely on local CSI.

Industry 4.0 anticipates massive interconnectivity of industrial devices (e.g., sensors, actuators) to support factory automation and production. Due to the rigidity of wired connections to harmonize with automation, wireless information transfer has attracted substantial attention. However, existing solutions for the manufacturing sector face critical issues in coping with the key performance demands: ultra-low latency, high throughput, and high reliability. Besides, recent advancements in wireless millimeter-wave technology advocates hybrid precoding with affordable hardware and outstanding spatial multiplexing performance. Thus, we present HYDRAWAVE - a new paradigm that contemplates the joint design of group scheduling and hybrid precoding for multi-group multicasting to support ubiquitous low-latency communications. Our hybrid precoder, based on semidefinite relaxation and Cholesky matrix factorization, facilitates the robust design of the constant-modulus phase shifts rendering formidable performance at a fraction of the power required by fully-digital precoders. Further, our novel group scheduling formulation minimizes the number of scheduling windows while accounting for the channel correlation of the co-scheduled multicast receivers. Compared to exhaustive search, which renders the optimal scheduling at high overhead, HYDRAWAVE incurs only 9.5% more delay. Notoriously, HYDRAWAVE attains up to 102% gain when compared to the other benchmarked schemes.

We consider the problem of transmit beamforming in multi-group multicasting systems with covariance-based channel state information (CSI) available at the transmitter where the total transmitted power is minimized subject to quality-of-service (QoS) constraints at the receivers. Previous approaches for this problem are based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and require randomization and costly power scaling which is avoided in our approach. The proposed technique can be viewed as a non-trivial extension of the iterative second-order cone programming (SOCP) approach of [5], which is restricted to the case of instantaneous (rank-one) CSI, to the beamforming problem with higher-rank channel covariance matrices. Computer simulations reveal that the proposed technique exhibits superior performance in terms of total transmitted power at a reduced computational complexity as compared to the SDR method.

Max-Min Fair Resource Allocation for SWIPT in multi-group multicast OFDM Systems

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer is considered for multi-group multicasting OFDM systems. Each user has the energy harvesting capability through a power splitter (PS). The power and subcarrier allocation at the base station is done such that the minimum signal-to-noise ratio among the users for each subcarrier is maximized while user needs for harvested power are satisfied. The optimization of PS ratios in addition to resource allocation is realized in a joint manner. It is shown that the problem can be cast in a convex optimization form for the given subcarrier sets. In order to determine the subcarrier sets, an efficient subcarrier allocation algorithm is proposed. It is shown that the proposed method performs very close to the exhaustive search, which gives the optimum solution.

This paper considers a multi-cell multi-group massive MIMO multicasting system. It is assumed the system has L cells, where each cell has N groups of K single antenna users. The users in each group are interested to the same message and they form a multicasting group. In this paper first, we present a precoding scheme that asymptotically removes the interference and noise and provide infinite signal to interference plus noise ratio, when the channel state information is available at the base station. Second, we propose a channel state information acquisition scheme using uplink training and channel reciprocity based on time division duplexing operation. The main difference of the proposed method with the common methods in the literature is that it decreases the number of required orthogonal training sequences for channel state information acquisition from NK to N. Third, we elaborate the effect of pilot contamination on the proposed training and precoding and present the asymptotic performance of multi-cell multi-group massive MIMO multicasting systems under pilot contamination. Also we show for these systems even in the asymptote the signal to interference plus noise is bounded by a known upper bound. Finally we revise the proposed multicasting scheme such that we can achieve an infinite signal to interference plus noise ratio in the asymptote even when accounting for channel state information acquisition and under pilot contamination.
