PSO based parameter estimation and PID controller tuning for 2-DOF nonlinear twin rotor MIMO system

The present paper proposes a control methodology for a nonlinear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system that combines a stochastic optimisation and proportional-integral-differential (PID) control scheme. This methodology is demonstrated through a laboratory scale helicopter setup commonly known as the twin rotor MIMO system (TRMS). The objective is to design a stochastically optimal/near optimal control law that can simultaneously stabilise the TRMS with considerable cross-couplings and provide satisfactory tracking performance to reach a desired position. The proposed control methodology utilises two PID controllers independently employed for the two rotors of TRMS. A PSO based parameter estimation technique has been utilised in this paper to estimate the parameters of the nonlinear TRMS laboratory setup. The nonlinear TRMS model with estimated parameters is employed to tune the PID gains by means of PSO in an offline manner and then implemented in real-life experimentations. The proposed realisation of PID control strategy is implemented for both simulation and real-life experimentations and their results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology.

The paper focuses on teaching advanced MIMO control topics using hydraulic system model. Basic steps of nonlinear MIMO system control design are shown on three tank plant model. After modelling part, comprising nonlinear model based on first principles and its linearization about equilibrium point, two approaches to MIMO system control are demonstrated. The first approach designs a full state feedback PI controller in state space, the second one uses multi-loop approach with individual loop design, overall stability condition is used to detune loop PI controllers for the overall system issues. Droop control strategy proposed by referring to the output power versus frequency and voltage amplitude curve of the generator is used in the true-bipolar modular multilevel converter (MMC)- high-voltage direct current (HVdc) system. The other side of the true-bipolar MMC-HVdc system is generally connected to a large-scale new energy generation field. In this situation, people find that the oscillation problem occurs from time to time. To study systems with a high proportion of power electronics, this article respectively establishes the small-signal multi-input multi-output (MIMO) sequence impedance model of the ac side of a pseudo-bipolar MMC-HVdc system and a true-bipolar MMC-HVdc system considering frequency coupling. Simulation models are established on the MATLAB/Simulink platform to verify the accuracy of the established model.

This manuscript presents the application of interval type-2 fuzzy logic sets for the control of a twin-rotor multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system (TRMS). As such, accurate tracking with robustness to structured/unstructured uncertainties is achieved. Unlike other control methodologies, no prior knowledge of the system dynamics and/or parameters is needed. Simulation results of different TRMS configurations illustrate the performance of the control scheme in transient and steady-state conditions. Furthermore, the proposed interval type-2 fuzzy control strategy is compared against its type-1 counterpart.

This paper presents a novel controller for active vibration reduction in piezoelectric-actuated flexible structures. The new multi Positive Feedback (MPF) control consists of two sections where each operates using a set of actuators. One section uses position and the other uses velocity feedback to perform real-time vibration control. The 90 phase difference between the feedbacks leads to non-zero resultant control output. This property results in a more effective operation of the available actuators. Sections of the MPF controller are designed based on the concept of the Modified Positive Position Feedback (MPPF) control approach, where the damping of the control system is increased by addition of a first-order term parallel to a second-order compensator. The controller is designed to simultaneously control single or multi resonant frequency vibrations. Due to the high influence of gain values on the control performance, H-2 and H-infinity norms are used to optimize these gains. For validation purposes, the controller is verified here numerically and experimentally for vibration control of a clamped-clamped beam and a cantilever at resonance. According to the results, the MPF controller has a superior performance compared to the MPPF controller, in addition to effective suppression on both vibration displacement and velocity. Using the MPF controller in multimode and by utilizing the H-infinity gain optimization method, vibration displacement amplitudes were reduced to 19.4% of the uncontrolled state for the beam. Reduced-order disturbance observer-based adaptive reaching law control for discretized MIMO systems with unmatched uncertainties

In this paper, an adaptive discrete-time sliding mode control based on reduced-order disturbance observer is proposed for discretized multi-input multi-output systems subjected to unmatching condition. By using the designed discrete reduced-order disturbance observer, a new sliding surface is constructed to counteract the unmatched uncertainties. Then, to guarantee a smaller width of the quasi-sliding mode domain, an adaptive reaching law is developed, whose switching gain is adaptively tuned to prevent overestimation of disturbance on the premise of ensuring the reaching condition of sliding surface;meanwhile, the ranges of the quasi-sliding mode band and attractiveness region are deduced. The proposed control algorithm has low computational complexity and needs no information about the upper bound of unmatched uncertainty. The simulations on the control of a bank-to-turn missile demonstrates that the proposed method can effectively reject unmatched disturbance and provide higher accuracy in comparison with traditional methods.

Optimum Coverage/Capacity in MIMO Indoor Channel with Minimum Transmitters

In this paper, we consider a transmitter location finding problem for the best coverage and capacity in an indoor multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel. Hence, a multi-objective optimization problem is solved in order to achieve the above targets. A weighted combination of Receive Signal Strength (RSS) and channel capacity is defined as fitness function for this optimization problem. The proposed optimization method contains a jointly designed Ray Tracing Engine (RTE) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). The algorithm is applied on a sample environment which is fully simulated with RTE. The results show that the proposed method perfectly finds the best locations of the minimum number of MIMO transmitters at different weights for RSS and channel capacity.

Efficient Pilot Patterns and Channel Estimations for MIMO-OFDM systems

In this paper, we present the efficient pilot patterns and channel estimations for a high-rate multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system. In particular, we propose the scattered pilot (SP), edge pilot (EP), and continuous pilot (CP) by exploiting a basic orthogonal property of a unitary matrix. From the orthogonal property, we then propose the efficient channel frequency response (CFR) and channel impulse response (CIR) estimations. Finally, we evaluate the efficiency of the proposed schemes by comparing with a multi-input single-output OFDM (MISO-OFDM) system.

Robust iterative learning control for a class of nonlinear systems

A novel nonlinear control scheme-robust iterative learning control (RILC) is developed in this paper. The new robust ILC system provides a general framework targeting at synthesizing learning control and robust control methods with the help of Lyapunov's direct method, thereafter being able to handle more general classes of nonlinear uncertain systems. In the proposed control scheme, learning control and variable structure control are made to function in a complementary manner. The nonlinear learning control strategy is applied directly to the structured system uncertainties which can be separated and expressed as products of unknown state-independent functions and known state-dependent functions. For non-structured system uncertainties associated with known bounding functions as the only a priori knowledge, variable structure control(VSC) strategy is applied to ensure the global asymptotic stability. In addition, important issues regarding the objective trajectory categories, resetting condition, derivative signal requirement and their relationships have been made clear in this paper. Design, implementation and model predictive based control of a mode-changeable DC/DC converter for hybrid renewable energy systems

Since renewable energy sources such as PV and wind provide intermittent energy generation, this paper presents an advanced DC/DC converter that is able to set its operational mode automatically to either multi-input multi-output (MIMO) or single-input multi-output (SIMO) depending on the input source conditions. Power flow is controlled through the auxiliary relays added to a double-layer boost converter. Considering the transient events require fast dynamic response, model predictive control (MPC) is used to achieve the current control processes for both layers. Furthermore, the MPC is modified to adapt itself to changes in the topology. The proposed system is verified by simulations and experimentally. Results show that the proposed mode-changeable converter successfully determines the optimum power route after deciding the best operational mode in accordance with the input source conditions. Furthermore, the control method achieves a powerful and effective control process in both MIMO and SIMO modes. (C) 2020 ISA. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
