Applying the Integral Controllability Property in a multi-loop Control for Stable Voltage Regulation in an Active Distribution Network

Distributed Energies Resources (DERs) can be controlled for supporting the voltage regulation at nodes of an Active Distribution Network (ADN) where they are connected. However, since the ADN is a multi-Input multi-Output (MIMO) system with coupled dynamics, the controller of a DER mutually interacts with all other controllers through the distribution lines. These interactions lead to operating conflicts which may drive the ADN to work close to its voltage stability boundaries. To achieve a stable voltage regulation without new investment in the existing ADNs, the present paper proposes a straightforward decentralized design of the multi-loop controllers based on the property of integral controllability. The main feature of the method is that the design problem can be expressed by a single parameter designed both for reducing the effects of the undesired coupling and for increasing the degree of robust stability in the presence of parameter uncertainty in the matrix plant. Simulation studies are developed to illustrate the design result and the performance achieved under different operating conditions. The performance is also compared with the one obtained by another method in terms of the integral absolute error.

This article introduces an adaptive multi-loop controller for capacitive wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. The new control approach combines continuous frequency tracking and matching networks tuning on both the primary and secondary to regulate a target current/power to the receiving side at the optimal power transfer conditions. This enables to effectively disengage the power delivery capabilities from the cross-coupling interactions between the transmitting and receiving sides and to compensate for variations of the electrical circuits and capacitive medium. This article highlights the complex functional relationships of the multi-mixed-signal controller and provides theoretical as well as practical insights on the dynamics and implementation of a closed-loop capacitive power transfer (CPT) system. The core of the multi-loop controller has been implemented through a digital orientation on an HDL platform. The effectiveness of the new controller is demonstrated on an experimental prototype of a resonant double-sided LC capacitive WPT that has been designed and implemented to operate in the megahertz (MHz) range. The experimental closed-loop operation is well demonstrated under various loads and medium conditions up to 200-mm air gap, validating the self-tuned CPT system. Furthermore, the capacitive interface has been methodically examined through Maxwell's finite-element analysis (FEA) tools for different structures, distances, and alignments. The results of the FEA have been utilized to enhance the accuracy of the experiments, accounting for the variable coupling capacitance under variations.

Permanent magnet BLDC machines are being considered for wide range of applications due to their numerous advantages. Developing stable drives meeting the application specific performance objective is very important. Selection of closed loop parameters in the case of multiloop BLDC control is crucial. Conventional control parameter tuning methods offer certain limitations. In this paper, a constructive method for high power BLDC motor control parameter selection and finetuning has been proposed. Effectiveness of proposed method in terms of closed loop stability, disturbance rejection and reference tracking performance has been discussed. For analysis and validation purpose an 88kW BLDC motor is considered.

A classical voltage source inverter (VSI) generates an ac voltage that is lower than the DC input voltage. A boost inverter is different from a VS1 in the sense that it can generate an ac voltage whose peak can be either higher or lower compared to that of the DC input voltage. Although two-stage boost inverters are very common, there has been a growing interest in single stage boost inverters. This review focuses on single-phase, single stage boost inverters where a load is connected differentially between two boost converters to produce a sinusoidal wave. The main drawback of this type of inverter lies in its control algorithm since the controller has to deal with a variable-operating point condition. Considering this issue, different kinds of controllers have been proposed in many works. This work also presents a review of those controller algorithms. Finally, it is concluded that due to the bilinear nature of the boost inverter an accurate small-signal model of the boost inverter is still a work in progress.

A singularity-free nonlinear hierarchical control framework is proposed in this paper for control of a quad-rotorcraft unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A saturation control scheme with hyperbolic tangent function is designed for the position loop controller to ensure non-singular command attitude extraction and the effect of nonlinear coupling between the position and attitude subsystem is subsequently analyzed. The problem of sign-ambiguity commonly appears in reference attitude is overcome using arc tangent function by considering the signs of both the arguments. To obviate the problem of singularity during attitude tracking, a non-singular attitude loop controller using barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) with corresponding initial condition constraint is proposed. A rigorous stability analysis proves that the overall closed-loop system is asymptotically stable (AS) and all the signals are bounded in the cascaded control structure. The singularity-free hierarchical control development and its stability analysis exploits the full state space Euler-Lagrange under-actuated dynamics in terms of generalized coordinates with generalized force and torque collocated with generalized velocities. Simulation results show the performance of the proposed controller.

In this work, the models and control strategy of the Electric Servo-torque System(ESS) which is used as an experiment rig for conducting dynamic performance and stability tests of aerial vehicle control surface actuation systems are presented. The detailed dynamics of the load motor and loaded flight actuator's rotating movement in the ESS are analyzed, leading to an integrated load torque synchronization system. The kinematic dynamics of the loaded control surface driving actuator is an important consideration to estimate the trend of torque variation and to improve the performance of the load system. The load control method is expressed in terms of a multi-loop torque control law, which uses feedback and feedforward loops to meet system design requirements. Numerical examples together with experimental results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed models and control parameters. This brief addressed a specific utilization of the loaded actuator's dynamics, revealing that it can reduce both the phase lag and the amplitude gain of the load torque in the Electric Servo-torque System.

We are considering the problem of controlling inductions motors driven through AC/DC rectifiers and DC/AC inverters. The control objectives are threefold: (i) forcing the motor speed to track a reference signal, (ii) regulating the DC Link voltage, (iii) assuring a satisfactory power factor correction (PFC) with respect to the power supply net. First, a nonlinear model of the whole controlled system is developed in the Park-coordinates. Then, a nonlinear multi-loop controller is synthesized using the backstepping design technique. A formal analysis based on Lyapunov stability and average theory is developed to describe the control system performances. In addition to closed-loop global asymptotic stability, it is proved that all control objectives (motor speed tracking, DC link voltage regulation and unitary power factor) are asymptotically achieved up to unavoidable but small harmonic errors (ripples).

A multi-loop controller for gird-connected voltage source converters with LCL filter is proposed in this paper. The controller consists of three segments - inner predictive current controller, outer voltage vector controller, and the command voltage modifier. The whole controller is applied to converters based DRs in microgrids, and regulate the load terminal voltage with zero steady-state error even under unbalanced conditions. Selected results from simulation studies conducted on the performance of the controller under balanced and unbalanced conditions both in island and grid-connected mode are presented.
