Analysis of Avoided Transmission Through Decentralized Photovoltaic and Battery Storage Systems

Decentralized renewable energy systems can be low-carbon power sources, and promoters of local economies. It is often argued that decentralized generation also helps reducing transmission costs, as generation is closer to the load, thus utilizing the transmission system less. The research presented here addresses the question whether or not, or under what circumstances this effect of avoided transmission can actually be seen for a community-operated cluster of photovoltaic (PV) power plants in two sample locations, one in Germany and one in Japan. For the analysis, the newly developed instrument of MPI-MPE diagrams is used, which plot the maximum power import (MPI) and maximum power export (MPE) in relation to the reference case of no local generation. Results reveal that for moderately sized PV systems without battery storage, avoided transmission can be seen in the Japanese model location, but not in Germany. It was also found that additional battery storage can lead to avoided transmission in both locations, even for large sizes of installed PV capacity.

Solving polyhedral d.c. optimization problems via concave minimization

The problem of minimizing the difference of two convex functions is called polyhedral d.c. optimization problem if at least one of the two component functions is polyhedral. We characterize the existence of global optimal solutions of polyhedral d.c. optimization problems. This result is used to show that, whenever the existence of an optimal solution can be certified, polyhedral d.c. optimization problems can be solved by certain concave minimization algorithms. No further assumptions are necessary in case of the first component being polyhedral and just some mild assumptions to the first component are required for the case where the second component is polyhedral. In case of both component functions being polyhedral, we obtain a primal and dual existence test and a primal and dual solution procedure. Numerical examples are discussed.

Robust solutions to multi-objective linear programs with uncertain data

In this paper we examine multi-objective linear programming problems in the face of data uncertainty both in the objective function and the constraints. First, we derive a formula for the radius of robust feasibility guaranteeing constraint feasibility for all possible scenarios within a specified uncertainty set under affine data parametrization. We then present numerically tractable optimality conditions for minmax robust weakly efficient solutions, i.e., the weakly efficient solutions of the robust counterpart. We also consider highly robust weakly efficient solutions, i.e., robust feasible solutions which are weakly efficient for any possible instance of the objective matrix within a specified uncertainty set, providing lower bounds for the radius of highly robust efficiency guaranteeing the existence of this type of solutions under affine and rank-1 objective data uncertainty. Finally, we provide numerically tractable optimality conditions for highly robust weakly efficient solutions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Matching socio-economic and environmental efficiency of wood-residues energy chain: a partial equilibrium model for a case study in Alpine area

Combining the economics and the environmental and social aspects of bioenergy chain implementation is a difficult task, particularly for wood fuel production. multiple aspects, such as financial analysis, technology development, natural resource exploitation and avoided environmental pollution, must be considered simultaneously. Thus, decision support models seem to be the proper tools for the overall definition of strategies in the wood energy sector. The objective of this study has been to develop a partial equilibrium model able to quantify the socio-economic and environmental effects of policy, technology and best biomass allocation scenarios on the forest residue chain. The model, based on multi-objective linear programming and spatial analysis, considers the financial benefits/losses and the potential trends of three compartments: sawmills, forest enterprises and energy plants. In addition, the model computes avoided emissions for bioheat and bioelectricity production and introduces an impact indicator for the road transport of biomass. Model outputs are defined using a multi criteria approach. The main results stress the importance of both environmental parameters and the implementation of organic Rankine cycle technology for the optimization of the entire bioenergy chain. While conventional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models set targets for each operational unit, this paper considers the problem of input/output reduction in a centralized decision making environment. The purpose of this paper is to develop an approach to input/output reduction problem that typically occurs in organizations with a centralized decision-making environment. This paper shows that DEA can make an important contribution to this problem and discusses how DEA-based model can be used to determine an optimal input/output reduction plan. Mehar's method to find exact fuzzy optimal solution of unbalanced fully fuzzy multi-objective transportation problems

To the best of our knowledge, till now there is no method described in literature to find exact fuzzy optimal solution of balanced as well as unbalanced fully fuzzy multi-objective transportation problems. In this paper, a new method named as Mehar's method, is proposed to find the exact fuzzy optimal solution of fully fuzzy multi-objective transportation problems (FFMOTP). The advantages of the Mehar's method over existing methods are also discussed. To show the advantages of the proposed method over existing methods, some FFMOTP, which cannot be solved by using any of the existing methods, are solved by using the proposed method and the results obtained are discussed. To illustrate the applicability of the Mehar's method, a real life problem is solved.

A hybrid input-output multi-objective model to assess economic-energy-environment trade-offs in Brazil

A multi-objective linear programming (MOLP) model based on a hybrid Input Output (10) framework is presented. This model aims at assessing the trade-offs between economic, energy, environmental (E3) and social objectives in the Brazilian economic system. This combination of multi-objective models with Input Output Analysis (IOA) plays a supplementary role in understanding the interactions between the economic and energy systems, and the corresponding impacts on the environment, offering a consistent framework for assessing the effects of distinct policies on these systems. Firstly, the System of National Accounts (SNA) is reorganized to include the National Energy Balance, creating a hybrid 10 framework that is extended to assess Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and the employment level. The objective functions considered are the maximization of GDP (gross domestic product) and employment levels, as well as the minimization of energy consumption and GHG emissions. An interactive method enabling a progressive and selective search of non-dominated solutions with distinct characteristics and underlying trade-offs is utilized. Illustrative results indicate that the maximization of GDP and the employment levels lead to an increase of both energy consumption and GHG emissions, while the minimization of either GHG emissions or energy consumption cause negative impacts on GDP and employment. Optimizing the management of soil erosion

To reduce the environmental and economical impact of soil erosion resulting from improper management of land-use activities, a study was initiated by the Iranian Ministry of Construction on Syahrood, one of the sub-basins of the Damavand watershed in Iran. Land-use optimization is one of the appropriate strategies for soil conservation. It can empower the decision maker or watershed manager to choose from different land-use scenarios to reach the best decision with the different combinations of variables. The output results of the sediment yield model, including the integration of the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) with Spatial Analysis System-Geographic Information System (SPANS-GIS), along with the net income of each land use were used as input in the land-use optimization model for minimizing the sediment yield and maximizing farm production of each land use. The multi-objective linear programming simplex method of Steuer (1995) was used to solve the problem. The optimization process allocated dryland farming, areas to rangelands if no changes were made to the current supporting practice system. The expected annual sediment yield from the entire sub-basin was reduced by 2420 tonnes/year (or by 5%) and the annual net farm income was increased by 3.99 billion Iranian Rial/year (or by 134%).

A multi-objective model for purchasing raw materials of a large-scale integrated of bulk steel plant

The cost of purchasing raw materials and components accounts for a significant fraction in the production and manufacturing industry. Modeling of purchasing issues and hence using quantitative methods to study the purchasing issues are significant for a purchasing decision-maker (DM) with comparable schemes. This paper is grounded on purchasing of bulk raw materials of a certain large-scale steel plant. It establishes a multi-objective linear programming model (MOLP) for the special issues of purchasing these raw materials, and indicates selecting items, selecting vendors and deciding ordering quantity as the key issue in optimizing purchasing policies. A kind of multi-objective optimal method, the point estimate weighted-sums, is used to solve this model. A group of really numeral computational results show that the model is effective and can take effect on the determination. of purchasing decision. In the end of this paper, the future research directions on purchasing of raw materials are pointed out. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Bioethanol from sugarcane can be produced using first-generation (1G) or second-generation (2G) technologies. 2G technologies can increase the capacity of production per sugarcane mass input and are expected to have a key role in future reductions of environmental impacts of sugarcane bioethanol. A hybrid Input-Output (10) framework is developed for Brazil coupling the System of National Accounts and the National Energy Balance, which is extended to assess Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Life cycle based estimates for two sugarcane cultivation systems, two 1G and eight 2G bioethanol production scenarios, are coupled in the IO framework. A multi-objective linear programming (MOLP) model is formulated based on this framework for energy-economic-environmental analysis of the Brazilian economic system and domestic bioethanol supply in prospective scenarios. Twenty-four solutions are computed: four "extreme" solutions resulting from the individual optimization of each objective function (GDP, employment level, total energy consumption and total GHG emissions-1G scenario), ten compromise solutions minimizing the distance of the feasible region to the ideal solution (1G, 1G-optimized and prospective 1G +2G scenarios), and ten solutions maximizing the total bioethanol production (1G, 1G-optimized and prospective I G + 2G scenarios). Higher diesel oil and lubricants consumption in the mechanical harvesting process has counterbalanced the positive effects of more efficient trucks leading to higher energy consumption and GHG emissions. Lower overall employment level in the 1G + 2G scenarios is achieved such that policies linked to reabsorption of sugarcane cutters in alternative activities are positive. Indirect effects from maximizing the bioethanol production increase the total energy consumption and the GHG emissions thus requiring efficiency measures and fossil energy substitution by cleaner sources.
