A New Adaptation Strategy for multi-resolution method

Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and wavelet-based multi-resolution technique, which refine the spatial resolution in regions of interest and coarsen the mesh in other regions, are widely used in scientific computing for higher computational efficiency. The key component of AMR and the multi-resolution method is the adaptation strategy including the regularity estimation. In this paper, a new adaptation strategy for AMR and the multi-resolution method is proposed. Different from AMR, which measures the function regularity based on an empirical gradient operator, and the multi-resolution method with complicated wavelet analysis, the new approach examines the solution smoothness based on the high-order TENO reconstruction (Fu et al. in J Comput Phys 305:333-359, 2016). The core idea is that the TENO scheme not only provides the reconstructed data at the cell interface for flux evaluation but also classifies the local flow scales as smooth or nonsmooth on the discretized mesh. Since the scale-separation procedure is achieved in the spectral and characteristic space, the new adaptation strategy is weakly problem-dependent. Moreover, the extra complexity due to the empirical gradient computing or the wavelet analysis is eliminated. Based on Harten's finite-volume multi-resolution method (Harten in J Comput Phys 115(2):319-338, 1994), a set of benchmark cases is simulated to validate the performance of the proposed method.

A generic smoothed wall boundary in multi-resolution particle method for fluid-structure interaction problem

Dealing with complex geometry boundaries is a challenge for particle boundary conditions. Since the effective area of the fluid particle is cut off by the boundary, it is difficult to obtain accurate results near the boundary, especially for complex geometry shapes. Things become more complicated when dealing with multiple sizes of particles in multi-resolution particle methods. In this paper, a generic smoothed wall (GSW) boundary is proposed by using single layer particles to accurately discretize the boundary. The boundary weight function is transformed to a distance function to fill the vacancy of the particle number density of fluid particles. The GSW boundary can be applied in the static, moving and non-linear deforming wall conditions. It also can be used to effectively handle complex geometric boundaries, since simulation results are not affected by changes in the number and size of wall particles. In addition, the GSW boundary also shows good results when combined with multi-resolution methods solving problems with multiple sizes of particles. In this paper, the MPS-DEM coupling method with GSW boundary model is applied to solve non-linear FSI problem. Several cases have been calculated to validate the accuracy, convergency and stability of the GSW boundary model. Compared with dummy particle boundary, results show that the proposed GSW boundary model can improve the numerical accuracy near the boundary, and handle arbitrary moving boundaries with high efficiency. Application of Adaptive Parallel Fast Marching method in Automatic Submarine Cable Path Planning

Submarine optical fiber communication cables (subsequently referred to as submarine cables) form the backbone of the Internet's infrastructure. Damage to these cables can precipitate Internet outages with far-reaching socio-economic impacts. The prevailing practice of manual cable routing is laborious, considering the thousands of kilometers these cables span. It also fails to strike an optimal balance between cost and risk due to its lack of scalability and precision. The Fast Marching method (FMM), a non-iterative, precise numerical approach capable of solving the Eikonal equation, offers a viable alternative by optimizing the required path between source and destination, considering a summary objective function of costs and risk factors. An interpretation of its solution signifies the optimum value of the objective function between a starting point and all other points. However, the sequential nature of the FMM algorithm suffers from computational limitations and impedes direct parallelization. In this study, we introduce an Adaptive Parallel FMM (APFMM), an innovative approach utilizing adaptive domain decomposition and dynamic multi-resolution analysis. This scalable and widely applicable method can overcome the limitations of existing methods and achieve planning of high-precision, ultra-long-distance (over 14,000 km) submarine cable routes over the Earth's surface. Simulated experiment results corroborate that APFMM effectively overcomes the computational challenges posed by the sequential FMM when dealing with large datasets. Additionally, it reduces the running time by more than 81% compared to the traditional parallel FMM. This marks a substantial advancement in facilitating efficient, automated, high-precision planning for long-distance submarine cable paths. In this work, a multi-resolution strategy is developed to solve unsteady diffusion problems with arbitrary heat source location. It is based on a variable separation approach which allows us to compute an explicit solution with respect to the heat source location and also to reuse an initial basis for new configurations. Thus, the change of sets of parameters (type of heat source, number of layers ...) does not imply the resolution of the complete thermal problem for each time step, but it is reduced to update 1D functions. For this purpose, the temperature is written as a sum of separated functions of the axial coordinate x, the transverse coordinate z, the time t and the volumetric heat source location x(s). The derived non-linear problem implies an iterative process in which four 1D problems are solved successively at each iteration. In the thickness direction, a fourth-order expansion in each layer is considered. For the axial description, classical Finite Element method is used. The presented approach is assessed on various laminated beams under different loadings and comparisons with reference solutions with a fixed heat source location are proposed. These test cases show the possibilities and the accuracy of the method.

A new wavelet-based method for solving population balance equations with simultaneous nucleation, growth and agglomeration is proposed, which uses wavelets to express the functions. The technique is very general, powerful and overcomes the crucial problems of numerical diffusion and stability that often characterize previous techniques in this area. It is also applicable to an arbitrary grid to control resolution and computational efficiency. The proposed technique has been tested for pure agglomeration, simultaneous nucleation and growth, and simultaneous growth and agglomeration. In all cases, the predicted and analytical particle size distributions are in excellent agreement. The presence of moving sharp fronts can be addressed without the prior investigation of the characteristics of the processes. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

A new wavelet-based adaptive collocation method is formulated for the solution of breakage equations. The technique of grid adaptation is based on sparse point representation (SPR). Without loss of generality, the method is applied and tested for the cases of uniform binary breakup and multiple breakup. A new wavelet-based adaptive framework for solving population balance equations (PBEs) is proposed in this work. The technique is general, powerful and efficient without the need for prior assumptions about the characteristics of the processes. Because there are steeply varying number densities across a size range, a new strategy is developed to select the optimal order of resolution and the collocation points based on an interpolating wavelet transform (IWT). The proposed technique has been tested for size-independent agglomeration, agglomeration with a linear summation kernel and agglomeration with a nonlinear kernel. In all cases, the predicted and analytical particle size distributions (PSDs) are in excellent agreement. Further work on the solution of the general population balance equations with nucleation, growth and agglomeration and the solution of steady-state population balance equations will be presented in this framework. An efficient multi-resolution SPH framework for multi-phase fluid-structure interactions

Applying different spatial and temporal resolutions for different sub-systems is an effective approach to increase computational efficiency for particle-based methods. However, it still has many challenges in terms of achieving an optimized computational efficiency and maintaining good numerical robustness and accuracy for the simulation of multi-phase flows involving large density ratio and interacting with rigid or flexible structures. In the present work, based on the multi-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) method [Zhang et al., JCP 429, 110028(2021)], an efficient multi-resolution SPH framework for multi-phase fluid-structure interactions(FSI) is proposed. First, an efficient multi-phase model, exploiting different density reinitialization strategies instead of applying different formulations to implement mass conservation to the light and heavy phases, respectively,is developed and the same artificial speed of sound for both phases can be used. Then, the transport velocity formulation is rewritten by applying temporal local flow state dependent background pressure to eliminate the unnatural voids, unrealistic phase separation and decrease the numerical dissipation. Finally, the one-sided Riemann-based solid boundary condition is modified to handle the FSI coupling in both single-and multi-resolution scenarios in the triple point. A set of examples involving multi-phase flows with high density ratio, complex interface and multi-phase FSI are studied to demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy and robustness of the present method.

3D multi-resolution deep learning model for diagnosis of multiple pathological types on pulmonary nodules

To accurately diagnose multiple pathological types of pulmonary nodules based on lung computed tomography (CT) images, a multi-resolution three-dimensional (3D) multi-classification deep learning model (Mr-Mc) was proposed. The Mr-Mc model was constructed by using our own constructed lung CT image dataset of pulmonary nodules with clinical pathological information (LCID-CPI), which can accurately diagnose inflammation, squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and other benign diseases. In order to process nodules with different sizes, a multi-resolution extraction method was proposed to extract 3D volume data with different resolutions from lung CT images. The Mr-Mc was composed of three different resolution networks, each of which has input volume data of a specific resolution. Experiments showed that the constructed Mr-Mc model can achieve an average accuracy of 0.81 on LCID-CPI. Besides, the Mr-Mc model can also achieve a high accuracy of 0.87 on the Lung Image Database Consortium and Image Database Resource Initiative dataset.
