The multi-view video coding improves the coding efficiency by utilizing motion-compensated prediction (MCP) and disparity-compensated prediction (DCP). However, the complexity of the inter frame prediction is very high, especially when the rate-distortion optimization is used. This paper presents a fast inter frame prediction algorithm to reduce the complexity. Firstly the prediction type is decided according to reference frames. Then some unuseful search regions in view direction are removed. Finally a fast inter mode decision strategy is proposed based on the relationship between MCP and DCP. Experimental results verify that the proposed algorithm can greatly increase the speed of prediction with negligible loss of coding efficiency.

multi-view video coding (MVC) is very promising in applicable field for its 3D effect and interactive functions (multi viewpoint). In this paper, a network-friendly architecture for MVC is proposed. To exploit temporal as well as inter-view dependencies between adjacent cameras, two main features of the coder are used: hierarchical B picture and FGS (fine granularity scalable). coding results are shown for the proposed multi-view coder and compared to the traditional coding architectures to show that our presented coding scheme outperforms the other approaches for the tested sequence.

There are mainly two key points which can affect the efficiency of multi-view video capture and transmission system largely: communication between cameras and computing complexity of encoder. In this paper, we propose a practical framework of distributed multi-view video coding, in which inter-camera communication is avoided and the large computing complexity is moved from encoder to decoder. In this scheme, multi-camera video sources are encoded separately and decoded dependently, and the traditional inter frame is replaced by Wyner-Ziv frame. To reach this goal, Wyner-Ziv theory on source coding with side information is employed as the basic coding principle. A Wyner-Ziv coding method based on wavelet transform and turbo codes is used as the core of the scheme. To further improve the coding performance, we also consider exploiting the large redundancy between adjacent views. A more flexible prediction method that can jointly use temporal and view correlations is proposed to generate the side information at the decoder. The experimental results show that the coding performance of proposed DMVC scheme is very promising compared to the traditional intra coding.

Exhaustive mode decision is exploited in multi-view video coding for effectively improving the coding efficiency, but at the expense of yielding higher computational complexity. In this paper, a fast mode decision algorithm, called the mode-correlation-based early termination (MET), is proposed. For each macroblock, the proposed MET algorithm always starts with checking whether the rate-distortion (RD) cost computed at the SKIP mode is below an adaptive threshold for providing a possible early termination chance. This adaptive threshold is calculated by using the mode correlation between the current macroblock and a set of adjacent macroblocks in the current view and its neighboring view. Experimental results have shown that compared with exhaustive mode decision, which is a default approach set in the JMVM reference software, the proposed MET algorithm achieves a reduction of the computational complexity by 65.91% and the total bit rate by 0.98% on average, while incurring only 0.06 dB loss in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR).

In this paper, an efficient mode decision algorithm, named the multi-correlation-based mode decision (MMD), is proposed to reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the high coding efficiency. In this method, the rate distortion (RD) cost of the Direct mode is always computed and compared with an adaptive threshold as a possible early termination chance. This adaptive threshold is determined by using the spatial, temporal and inter-view correlation between the current macroblock (MB) and its neighboring macroblocks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MMD algorithm can significantly achieve computational saving of 72.38 % on average with no significant loss of rate-distortion performance, compared with the full mode decision in the reference software of multi-view video coding (MVC).

As the number of views comprised in multi-view videos increases, some challenging problems emerge. Besides the bandwidth problems caused by the huge data flow, the calculation power needed by the multi-view encoder is an even higher burden than that of a single view encoder. In this paper, a complexity efficient way to encode a single-time instant of 5x3 view frames is presented. Some of the P frames known from the traditional encoding schemes have been replaced by a new type of frame called the D frame, in which the disparity vector of a block in a view can be derived from the other views due to the strong geometrical correspondence existing between adjacent views. Experimental results show that 20.2% complexity gain is achieved without compromising quality and bit-rate by wisely selecting threshold values at different QPs.

multi-view video plus depth (MVD) data format for multi-view video coding (MVC) can support rendering a wide range continuum of views at the decoder for advanced 3DV and FVV systems. Thus, it is important to study global depth to reduce the rate for depth side information and to improve depth search efficiency. In this paper, we propose a global depth estimation algorithm from multi-view images using camera parameters. First, an initial depth is obtained from the convergent point of the camera system by solving a set of linear equations. Then, the global depth is searched around the initial depth to minimize the absolute difference between the synthesized view and the practical view. Because the initial depth can provide appropriate depth search range and step size, the global depth can be estimated efficiently and quickly with less computation. Experimental results verify the algorithm performance.

Robust multi-view video transmission over error-prone networks is a technical challenge problem for multi-view video coding (MVC). In this paper, a frame loss error concealment scheme is proposed for MVC to address the challenging problem at the decoder side. Different from traditional motion information derivation in temporal domain for single-view video coding, two novel information derivation schemes, motion information derivation in inter-view domain and disparity information derivation in temporal domain, are proposed in this paper. Each block of lost frames can be reconstructed from its temporal reference frame and its interview reference frame by merging different concealment results under the three prediction information derivations. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve frame loss error concealment performance for MVC.

Robustly delivering multi-view 3-D video over error-prone channel is a rather challenging task. In this paper, a ratedistortion optimized algorithm is proposed to improve error resilience for multi-view video transmission. Firstly, a recursive model to estimate the end-to-end distortion is developed for multi-view video coding, in which the channel distortion takes into consideration the inherent error resilience property of the hierarchical B prediction structure. Then, based on the estimated expected distortion, rate-distortion optimization is employed to perform coding mode decision. Extensive experimental results demonstrate significant performance gains can be achieved for multi-view video communication against transmission errors.

Reducing spatial redundancies between different camera views is one of the major challenges in multi-view video coding (MYC). However, with drastic increase in time consumption of such process, a proper way to reduce high computational complexity is needed. We propose an object-based fast prediction mode decision method in order to reduce complexity and time consumption of the,coding process. Since a foreground object in fast motion tends to be predicted in disparity compensated prediction mode, we can properly decide which prediction mode to use for each part of the scene in advance. Segmentation process is carried out to identify the foreground object from the scene. The proposed method can save up to nearly half of time consumption in the encoding process without much loss in the quality of video sequence.
