The coding efficiency of Wyner-Ziv frames relies considerably on the quality of side information and the capability to model the statistical dependency between the original frame and side information. In the field of distributed multi-view video coding. (DMVC), there are two kinds of side information, namely temporal side information (TSI), which is generated by exploiting the temporal correlation, and inter-view side information (IVSI), which is generated by exploiting the inter-view correlation. This paper proposes a new fusion method to get better side information by the region-based combination of TSI and IVSI. Besides, an improved statistical model of "correlation channel" is proposed to estimate the statistical dependency between the original frame and side information at the decoder. We call it Region-based Correlation Channel Model (RCCM). The RCCM models the "correlation channel" between original frame and side information At a fine granularity level by detecting the spatial quality variation of side information within each Wyner-Ziv frame. Experimental. results demonstrate that the RCCM can more accurately model the "correlation channel" between the original frame and side information and thus, less bits are required for decoding a Wyner-Ziv frame.

In order to solve the problem of inconsistent color appearance between different views, and subsequently influences on multi-view video coding, a color correction algorithm of multi-view video based on depth segmentation is proposed in this paper. Firstly, depth information in each view is calculated. Then, background and foreground region are separated with the depth information. Finally, correction factors are achieved and color correction is used for the two regions respectively. Moreover, the boundary between the background and foreground has been treated with color gradual change. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain consistent color appearance for different views and high coding efficiency. It is an effective method of color correction.

To transmit and to store digital video sequences, compression is necessary. Motion Estimation (ME) Technique is used to redundant data in video sequences. ME which limits the performance of image quality, generated bitrates and encoding time requires huge complexity. To reduce the computational complexity, a Hierarchical motion estimation scheme in multiview video coding (MVC) is proposed. The proposed method exploits the characteristics of the distribution of motion vectors to terminate the motion estimation early and to place the search points in the search area. Experiment results show that the complexity reduction of the proposed method over FS and TZ can be up to 98.9% and 42 similar to 78% respectively while maintaining image quality and bitrates. This electronic document is a "live" template and already.

view interpolation has been applied in multiview view coding. However, existing schemes assume all cameras are aligned. These methods may not perform well when neighboring cameras point to different directions. In this paper, we apply the rectification based view interpolation to MVC. We first derive the theoretical performance gain of the rectification based view interpolation over existing interpolation method. We then analyze the rate-distortion performance of the proposed MVC method, and compare with the disparity compensation based MVC and view interpolation based MVC without rectification. The analyses show that view rectification can offer additional coding gain over existing view interpolation based MVC, especially when the disparity estimation is accurate and when the neighboring cameras are close to each others. Preliminary experimental results are provided to verify the theoretical analysis.

This paper focuses on sharpening boundaries in depth maps for multi-view video coding. Artifacts around boundaries degrade the quality of synthesized images. In order to encounter this problem, after applying the deblocking filter for each frame, we create a binary edge map and find the location of blocks that need to be altered. Subsequently, we apply a boundary sharpening filter which uses pixel frequency, similarity, and closeness as sub-costs. This filter is only applied to blocks which are near edges. Experimental results exhibit much more visual comfort level in synthesized images compared to when JMVC was used.

Light Field imaging has emerged as a technology that enables the capture of images and video with richer information. Captured content is composed of numerous views aligned in both horizontal and vertical directions providing full parallax, offering light intensity and directional information, but at the same time significantly increasing bandwidth requirements. Several multi-view coding methods have attempted to tackle this problem. However, these approaches do not fully assess the intricacies that are found in light field content. This paper proposes a prediction structure for coding light field content using the MV-HEVC standard, exploiting the inter-view correlations in two directions along with the high similarity between views around the center of each frame. Experimental results show BD-rate gains up to 38% compared to an existing state-of-the-art method.

Most of the traditional block-matching algorithms for motion estimation (ME) can only yield local optimal motion vectors (MVs). In this paper, the autoregressive moving average process (ARMA) model is selected to formulate the correlation of neighboring blocks in a frame, and the adaptive Kalman filtering algorithm is applied to refine the MVs. The horizontal and vertical ARMA models are constructed to utilize the filtering algorithm twice to get a better performance. Our method can also be extended to realize disparity estimation (DE) in order to apply it in a multi-view video coding (MVC) system. The experiment results show the effectiveness of our method to improve the accuracy of conventional fast block matching algorithms.

In free viewpoint video (FVV) framework, a large number of viewpoints from limited number of views are generated to reduce the amount of transmitting, receiving and processing video data significantly. To generate a virtual view, the disparity among adjacent views or temporal correlation between different frames of the intermediate views are normally exploited. Those techniques may concern poor rendering quality by missing pixel values (i.e. creating holes) due to the occluded region, rounding error and disparity discontinuity. To address these problems recent techniques use inpainting, however, they still suffer quality degradation due to lack of spatial correlation on the foreground-background boundary areas. The background updating techniques with Gaussian mixture based modelling (GMM) can improve quality in some occluded areas, however, due to the dependencies on warping of background image and spatial correlation they still suffer quality degradation. In this paper, we propose a view synthesized prediction using Gaussian model (VSPGM) technique using the number of GMM models rather than the background image to identify background/foreground pixels. The missing pixels of background and foreground are recovered from the background pixel and the weighted average of warped and foreground model pixels respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed approach provides 0.50 similar to 2.14dB PSNR improved synthesized view compared with the state-of-the-art methods. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed synthesized view, we use it as a reference frame with immediate previous frame of current view in the motion estimation for multi-view video coding (MVC). The experimental results confirm that the proposed technique is able to improve PSNR by 0.17 to 1.00dB compared to the conventional three reference frames.

Recent work has shown that object-based video coding can provide higher coding gain than common H.264/AVC for single-view and the MVC standard based on H.264 for multi-view (MVC). The use of background sprites outperformes the AVC/MVC especially in sequences containing rotating camera motion and moving foreground objects. The coding performance strongly relies on the preprocessing steps, e.g. sprite generation and object segmentation. In this paper, we present an enhanced background sprite generation algorithm for object-based single- and multi-view video coding (OBVC/OBMVC). It is a new feature for our OBVC/OBMVC recently proposed. We produce multiple background sprites based on camera motion characterization and physical camera parameter estimation. Experimental results show how these multiple sprites increase the coding performance for single- and multi-view sequences.
