Depth-image based rendering is a popular technique for rendering virtual views for the multi-view video plus depth (MVD) 3DTV format. Instead of transmitting a high number of views to the receiver, only a few views are transmitted along with their corresponding depth maps and the missing views are interpolated from these transmitted views. This process is called view synthesis and has been the focus of a lot of research in recent times. In addition to the obvious quality constraints of view synthesis, focus needs to be laid on the efficiency and speed of the view synthesis process. In this paper, we propose a simple, highly efficient view synthesis process that utilizes a separable look-up table based technique to speed up the 3-D warping process. We also develop a reliability-based weighting scheme for blending the candidate views into the final synthesized view. Simulation results show that the proposed method is approximately 6 times faster than VSRS 3.5 and has comparable objective quality. The proposed method is inherently parallel thus making it suitable to act as a framework for implementing high-speed view synthesis on a GP-GPU.

In the field of multi-view video coding. multi-view plus depth video is an important data format, but it always suffers from quantization errors, which result in obvious artifacts in consequent virtual view rendering. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based cross-view filtering (CBF) scheme for the enhancement of compressed depth maps. In this scheme, reconstructed depth information are mapped from cross-view, and this information is benefit to the proposed filter. Then in filtering one viewpoint depth map with candidate information that are selected from non-locally current and neighboring viewpoints. Specifically, in our scheme, candidates are clustered in 3D super-pixel wise rather than block wise due to cross relationship among pixels in depth maps. The experimental results show that 2.0074 dB average gain can be obtained by our scheme, which suggests that the scheme outperforms than state-of-the-art and classical filters in filtering the reconstructed depth maps.

Light field video is a promising technology for delivering the required six-degrees-of-freedom for natural content in virtual reality. Already existing multi-view coding (MVC) and multi-view plus depth (MVD) formats, such as MV-HEVC and 3D-HEVC, are the most conventional light field video coding solutions since they can compress video sequences captured simultaneously from multiple camera angles. 3D-HEVC treats a single view as a video sequence and the other sub-aperture views as gray-scale disparity (depth) maps. On the other hand, MV-HEVC treats each view as a separate video sequence, which allows the use of motion compensated algorithms similar to HEVC. While MV-HEVC and 3D-HEVC provide similar results, MV-HEVC does not require any disparity maps to be readily available, and it has a more straightforward implementation since it only uses syntax elements rather than additional prediction tools for inter-view prediction. However, there are many degrees of freedom in choosing an appropriate structure and it is currently still unknown which one is optimal for a given set of application requirements. In this work, various prediction structures for MV-HEVC are implemented and tested. The findings reveal the trade-off between compression gains, distortion and random access capabilities in MV-HEVC light field video coding. The results give an overview of the most optimal solutions developed in the context of this work, and prediction structure algorithms proposed in state-of-the-art literature. This overview provides a useful benchmark for future development of light field video coding solutions.

this paper presents a HEVC based multi-view video codec. The frames of the multi-view videos are interleaved to generate a monoscopic video sequence. The interleaving is conducted in a way to increase the exploitation of the temporal and inter-views correlations. The MV-HEVC standard codec is configured to work as a single layered codec, which functions as a monoscipic HEVC codec with AVC capabilities, and used to encode interleaved multi-view video frames. The performance of the codec is compared with the anchor standard MV-HEVC codec by coding the three standard multi-view video sequences: "Balloon", "Kendo" and "Newspaper1". Experimental results show the proposed codec out performs the anchor standard MV-HEVC codec in terms of bitrate and PSNR.

Several quality evaluation studies have been performed for video-plus-depth coding systems. In these studies, however, the distortions in the synthesized views have been quantified in experimental setups where both the texture and depth videos are compressed. Nevertheless, there are several factors that affect the quality of the synthesized view. Incorporating more than one source of distortion in the study could be misleading;one source of distortion could mask (or be masked by) the effect of other sources of distortion. In this paper, we conduct a quality evaluation study that aims to assess the distortions introduced by the view synthesis procedure and depth map compression in multiview-video-plus-depth coding systems. We report important findings that many of the existing studies have overlooked, yet are essential to the reliability of quality evaluation. In particular, we show that the view synthesis reference software yields high distortions that mask those due to depth map compression, when the distortion is measured by average luma peak signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, we show what quality metric to use in order to reliably quantify the effect of depth map compression on view synthesis quality. Experimental results that support these findings are provided for both synthetic and real multiview-video-plus-depth sequences.

multi-view video coding is an international encoding standard that attains good performance by fully utilizing temporal and inter-view correlations. However, it suffers from high computational complexity. This paper presents a fast encoder design to reduce the level of complexity. First, when the temporal correlation of a group of pictures is sufficiently strong, macroblock-based inter-view prediction is not employed for the non-anchor pictures of B-views. Second, when the disparity between two adjacent views is above some threshold, frame-based inter-view prediction is disabled. Third, inter-view prediction is not performed on boundary macroblocks in the auxiliary views, because the references for these blocks may not exist in neighboring views. Fourth, finer partitions of inter-view prediction are cancelled for macroblocks in static image areas. Finally, when estimating the disparity of a macroblock, the search range is adjusted according to the mode size distribution of the neighboring view. Compared with reference software, these techniques produce an average time reduction of 83.65%, while the bit-rate increase and peak signal-to-noise ratio loss are less than 0.54% and 0.05dB, respectively.

Bit allocation and rate control algorithm for MVC

Since the current multi-view video coding (MVC) software does not contain any rate control technique, this paper proposes a rate control algorithm for MVC based on the quadratic rate-distortion (R–D) model. The proposed algorithm classifies each picture into six frame types based on the relation between disparity prediction and temporal prediction estimation and also improves the estimation accuracy of the mean absolute difference (MAD). The proposed method allocates the bits and controls the rate for inter-view, frame layer and basic unit layer based on the analysis of the previously coded information. Compared to the multi-view video coding with fixed quantisation parameter, the proposed scheme achieves up to 0·25 dB improvements in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Meanwhile, it can efficiently control the bit-rate with an average rate control error of 0·54%.

Recently, with the increasing demand for virtual reality (VR), experiencing immersive contents with VR has become easier. However, a tremendous amount of calculation and bandwidth is required when processing 360 videos. Moreover, additional information such as the depth of the video is required to enjoy stereoscopic 360 contents. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient method of streaming high-quality 360 videos. To reduce the bandwidth when streaming and synthesizing the 3DoF+ 360 videos, which supports limited movements of the user, a proper down-sampling ratio and quantization parameter are offered from the analysis of the graph between bitrate and peak signal-to-noise ratio. High-efficiency video coding (HEVC) is used to encode and decode the 360 videos, and the view synthesizer produces the video of intermediate view, providing the user with an immersive experience.

A multi-view video system would capture the same scene from different viewpoints, and suffer from significant illumination variations due to inaccurate camera calibration and varying light conditions. It deteriorates the inter-view correlations and the quality of synthesized views at decoder side. By converting the problem of illumination compensation to noise removing, this paper proposes a low-rank matrix completion algorithm to reduce the effect of illumination variation. Diverged from the existing work which chooses a central view as reference and keeps views consistent, it is dedicated to compensating all the views to match the low-rank structure of views. The discrepancies among views are regarded as mixed noise, and constructed as an incomplete matrix with low-rank. It is solved by a stable matrix completion and obtains a mapping function for color correction. It is robust to outliers since only plausible corresponding points are involved with completion. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can increase coding efficiency by up to 0.7dB for luminance component and up to 2.1dB for chrominance components.
