A motion vector prediction method for multi-view video coding

This paper proposes a new motion vector (MV) prediction method in multi-view video coding (MVC). In order to exploit the information in adjacent views, inter-view MVs as well as temporal MVs are used in conventional MVC. Since the inter-view MVs are usually uncorrelated with the temporal MVs and most neighboring partitions have temporal MVs only, the conventional DPCM coding gain of inter-view MV is very low and thus the inter-view MVs are seldom selected. In order to increase the probability of interview MV selection, we define a virtual inter-view MV which can be generated from temporal MVs. Then, an inter-view MV is predicted using these neighboring virtual inter-view MVs, leading to less prediction error than using the temporal MVs. As a result, bit-rates are decreased by up to 9% for the view-temporal prediction structure. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Adaptive Learning Based view Synthesis Prediction for multi-view video coding

In the applications of Free view TV, pre-estimated depth information is available to synthesize the intermediate views as well as to assist multi-view video coding. Existing view synthesis prediction schemes generate virtual view picture only from interview pictures. However, there are many types of signal mismatches caused by depth errors, camera heterogeneity or illumination difference across views and these mismatches decrease the prediction capability of virtual view picture. In this paper, we propose an adaptive learning based view synthesis prediction algorithm to enhance the prediction capability of virtual view picture. This algorithm integrates least square prediction with backward warping to synthesize the virtual view picture, which not only utilizes the adjacent views information but also the temporal decoded information to adaptively learn the prediction coefficients. Experiments show that the proposed method reduces the bitrates by up to 18 % relative to the multi-view video coding standard, and about 11 % relative to the conventional view synthesis prediction method.

Optimizing inter-view prediction structures for multi-view video coding using simulated annealing

New video applications, such as 3D video and free viewpoint video, require efficient compression of multi-view video. In addition to temporal redundancy, exploiting the inter-view redundancy is crucial to improve the performance of multi-view video coding. In this paper, we present a novel method to construct the optimal inter-view prediction structure for multi-view video coding using simulated annealing. In the proposed model, the design of the prediction structure is converted to the arrangement of coding order. Then, a simulated annealing algorithm is employed to minimize the total cost for obtaining the best coding order. This method is applicable to arbitrary irregular camera arrangements. As experiment results reveal, the annealing process converges to satisfactory results rapidly and the generated optimal prediction structure outperforms the reference prediction structure of the joint multi-view video model (JMVM) by 0.1-0.8 dB PSNR gains.

Efficient early direct mode decision for multi-view video coding

multi-view video coding (MVC) uses various prediction modes and exhaustive mode decision to achieve high coding efficiency. However, the introduced heavy computational complexity becomes the bottleneck of the practical application of MVC. For this, an efficient early Direct mode decision for MVC is proposed in this paper. Based on the observation that the Direct mode is highly possible to be the optimal mode, the proposed method first computes the rate distortion (RD) cost of the Direct mode and compares this RD cost value with an adaptive threshold for providing an early termination chance as follows. If this RD cost value is smaller than the adaptive threshold, the Direct mode will be selected as the optimal mode and the checking process of the remaining modes will be skipped;otherwise, all the modes will be checked to select the one with the minimum RD cost as the optimal mode. Note that the above-mentioned adaptive threshold is determined as the median prediction value of a set of thresholds, which are derived by using the spatial, temporal and inter-view correlations between the current macroblock (MB) and its neighboring MBs, respectively. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method is able to significantly reduce the computational complexity of MVC with negligible loss of coding efficiency, compared with the exhaustive mode decision in MVC. Adaptive data-driven parallelization of multi-view video coding on multi-core processor

multi-view video coding （MVC） comprises rich 3D information and is widely used in new visual media, such as 3DTV and free viewpoint TV （FTV）. However, even with mainstream computer manufacturers migrating to multi-core processors, the huge computational requirement of MVC currently prohibits its wide use in consumer markets. In this paper, we demonstrate the design and implementation of the first parallel MVC system on Cell Broadband Engine^TM processor which is a state-of-the-art multi-core processor. We propose a task-dispatching algorithm which is adaptive data-driven on the frame level for MVC, and implement a parallel multi-view video decoder with modified H.264/AVC codec on real machine. This approach provides scalable speedup （up to 16 times on sixteen cores） through proper local store management, utilization of code locality and SIMD improvement. Decoding speed, speedup and utilization rate of cores are expressed in experimental results.

multi-view video coding (MVC) has been extended from H.264/AVC to improve the coding efficiency of multi-view video. This paper proposes a fast mode decision algorithm which can make an early decision on the correct mode partition to solve the issue of the enormous computational complexity. The best modes of the reference views are utilized to determine the complexity of the macroblock (MB) in the current view, the mode candidates needed to be calculated can then be obtained according to the complexity. If the complexity is low or medium, the search range can be reduced. The threshold of the rate-distortion cost for the current MB is calculated using the co-located and neighboring MBs in previously coded view and is utilized as the criterion for early termination. The motion vector difference in the reference view is applied to dynamically adjust the search range in the current MB. Experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm achieves a time saving of 81.05% for a fast TZ search and 87.85% for full search, and still maintains quality performance and bitrate. Performance Improvement of multi-view video coding Based on Geometric Prediction and Human Visual System

This article proposed an accurate disparity vector prediction (DVP) algorithm for multi-view video coding. Differing from traditional DVP that uses the information of motion vectors of neighboring blocks, the geometry of the camera position is utilized to calculate the parallax of different viewpoints in this algorithm and this parallax is the foundation of DVP. We jointly applied the Just-Noticeable-Difference human visual model to the DVP. After filtered using Gaussian function, the geometric DVP was obtained. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved significant data reduction and subjective/objective quality enhancement. (c) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Free stereoscopic display offers a new means for stereoscopic observation, with the greatest strongpoint of experiencing true stereoscopic image without any aided equipments. It is a complex and highly technical process to achieve free stereoscopic display, among which the key technologies are: the components of stereoscopic display hardware, the formation of a stereoscopic data, multi-view video coding, storage and eventual broadcast. Every detail is explained about the design of stereo video player based on Davinci (TM) DM6446. A novel method of MVC coding structure is proposed after the study of H.264 MVC and character of stereo video. The experiment's results indicate that, compared with the original structure, the classification performance is improved in the coding structure.

We consider the problem of coding multi-view video that exhibits mismatches in frames from different views. Such mismatches could be caused by heterogeneous cameras and/or different shooting positions of the cameras. In particular, we consider focus mismatches across views, i.e., such that different portions of a video frame can undergo different blurriness/sharpness changes with respect to the corresponding areas in frames from the other views. We propose an adaptive filtering approach for cross-view prediction in multi-view video coding. The disparity fields are exploited as an estimation of scene depth. An Expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is applied to classify the disparity vectors into groups. Based on the classification result, a video frame is partitioned into regions with different scene-depth levels. Finally, for each scene-depth level, a two-dimensional filter is designed to minimize the average residual energy of cross-view prediction for all blocks in the class. The resulting filters are applied to the reference frames to generate better matches for cross-view prediction. Simulation results show that, when encoding across views, the proposed method achieves up to 0.8dB gain over current H.264 video coding.

Rate control is an important component of an end-to-end video communication system. Currently, there are several proposals for rate control in the upcoming High Efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, but none specifically for the multi-view extension of the standard. In this paper, we apply one of the HEVC single-view rate control schemes to the multi-view scenario, and propose two improvements. One improvement deals with Quantization Parameter (QP) initialization, and the other deals with interview Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) prediction. Experimental results demonstrate increased accuracy of rate control, reduced fluctuation of instantaneous bitrate, as well as a reduction in PSNR degradation compared to the existing rate control algorithm.
