We investigate coding of multiple image sequences with video sensors. The video sensors are arranged in an array to monitor the same scene from different view points. Furthermore, the sensors are connected to a central decoder via a network. Note that the video sensors process highly view-correlated images. This correlation can be exploited if the video sensors operate in a collaborative fashion. On the contrary, temporal correlation among the images of each sequence can be exploited locally at each sensor. Collaborative coding of the multi-view videos can be achieved by distributed processing of the multi-view imagery. If the video sensor network utilizes a central decoder, the view-correlation can be exploited by centralized disparity compensation at the decoder. But before the decoder is able to apply disparity compensation efficiently, accurate disparity values have to be estimated at the central decoder. This paper discusses the impact of disparity fields at the central decoder and uses these estimates for centralized disparity compensation at the decoder to improve the efficiency of the video sensor network.

Color inconsistency between views is an important problem to be solved in multi-view video applications, such as free viewpoint television and other three-dimensional video systems. In this paper, by combining with multi-view video coding, a coding-oriented multi-view video color correction method is proposed. We first separate foreground and background in first Group Of Pictures （GOP） by using SKIP coding mode. Then by transferring means and standard deviations in backgrounds, color correction is performed for each frame in GOP, and multi-view video coding is performed and used to renew the backgrounds. Experimental results ances in color correction and multi-view video show the proposed method can obtain better performcoding.

A study on the video plus depth representation for multi-view video sequences is presented. Such a 3D representation enables functionalities like 3D television and free viewpoint video. Compression is based on algorithms for multi-view video coding, which exploit statistical dependencies from both temporal and inter-view reference pictures for prediction of both color and depth data. coding efficiency of prediction structures with and without inter-view reference pictures is analyzed for multi-view video plus depth data, reporting gains in luma PSNR of up to 0.5 dB for depth and 0.3 dB for color. The main benefit from using a multi-view video plus depth representation is that intermediate views can be easily rendered. Therefore the impact on image quality of rendered arbitrary intermediate views is investigated and analyzed in a second part, comparing compressed multi-view video plus depth data at different bit rates with the uncompressed original.

Distributed coding Scheme for multi-view video through Efficient Side Information Generation

In this paper, a distributed image coding scheme for multi-view video through an efficient generation of side information is proposed. A distributed video coding technique corrects the errors in the side information, which is generated with the original image, by using the channel coding technique at the decoder. Therefore, the more correct the generated side information is, the better the performance of distributed video coding. The proposed technique is to apply the distributed video coding schemes to the image coding for multi-view video. It generates side information by selectively and efficiently using both 3-dimensional warping based on the depth map with spatially adjacent frame's and motion-compensated temporal interpolation with temporally adjacent frames. In this scheme the difference between the adjacent frames, the sizes of the motion vectors for the adjacent blocks, and the edge information are used as the selection criteria. From the experiments, it was observed that the quality of the side information generated by the proposed technique was improved by the average peak signal-to-noise ratio of 0.97dB than the one by motion-compensated temporal interpolation or 3-dimensional warping. The result from analyzing the rate-distortion curves revealed that the proposed scheme could reduce the bit-rate by 8.01% on average at the same peak signal-to-noise ratio value, compared to previous work.

Research on multi-view video Plus Depth coding Based on Network Bandwidth

In the free viewpoint television systems, video coder often has to operate within fixed bandwidth limitations over the network. This paper firstly shows detailed coding results at the target bit rates and selects the optimal combinations of quantization parameters (QPs) for video and depth. Then the joint coding for multi-view video plus depth which utilizes the optimal combination of the QPs is proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed coding method decreases the bit-rate by 16.07%∼24.02% in comparison with JMVC, while the proposed method has better performance in optimizing the tradeoff between bit-rate and visual quality.

A typical scenario for multi-view 3D consists of several 3D video sequences captured simultaneously from the same scene with the help of multiple cameras from different positions and through different angles. Due to the extremely high bandwidth of multi-view/3D video, rate control is one of the key factors influencing its quality. In this paper, we investigate the impacts of multi-view/3D video characteristics on the bit rate of a compressed video and we propose an analytical view-level rate model for multi-view video coding. Our rate model takes into account both previous theoretical results as well as new results specifically obtained for multi-view video and confirmed by comprehensive practical experiments. These new results reveal a close relationship between the rate of each view and consequently the perceived quality by users, available bandwidth and processing power. Simulation results indicate that our model can predict the rate of each view with relatively high precision and a low estimation error of 20% on average.

multi-view video streaming is an emerging video paradigm that enables new interactive services, such as 3D video, free viewpoint television, and immersive teleconferencing. Because of the high bandwidth cost they come with, multi-view streaming applications can greatly benefit from the use of network coding, in particular in transmission scenarios such as wireless network, where the channels have limited capacity and are affected by losses. In this paper, we address the topic of cooperative streaming of multi-view video content, wherein users who recently acquired the content can contribute parts of it to their neighbors by providing linear combinations of the video packets. We propose a novel method for selection and network encoding of the transmitted frames based on the users' preferences for the different views and the rate-distortion properties of the stream. Using network coding enables the users to retrieve the content in a faster and more reliable manner and without the need for coordination among the senders. Our experimental results prove that our preference-based approach provides a high-quality decoding even when the uplink capacity of each node is only a small fraction of the rate of the stream.

Disparity estimation can be used for eliminating redundancies between different views of an object or a scene recorded by an array of cameras which are arranged both horizontally and vertically. However, estimation of the disparity vectors is a highly time consuming process which takes most of the operation time of the multi-view video coding. Therefore, either the amount of data that is to be processed or the complexity of the coding method needs to be decreased in order to encode the multi-view video in a reasonable time. It is proven that the disparities of a point in the scene photographed by cameras which are spaced equidistantly are equal. Since there is a strong geometrical correlation of the disparity vectors, the disparity vector of a view can for most blocks be derived from the disparity vector of another view or views. A new algorithm is presented that reduces the amount of processing time needed for calculating the disparity vectors of each neighboring view except the principal ones. Different schemes are proposed for 3x3 views and they are applied to several image sequences taken from a camera-array. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes yield better results than the reference scheme while preserving the image quality and the amount of encoded data.

In this paper, a parametric texture based video coding scheme is proposed for multi-view videos. The proposed scheme exploits the perceptual redundancy of the textured region in a statistical manner which is ignored in the multi-view video coding scheme of H.264/MVC. This statistical nature of texture is independent of the 3D scene structure. The set of most similar texture macroblocks over different frames is termed as a motion thread. In the proposed scheme, each P slice/frame of multiview video is categorized into non-texture blocks which are encoded by H.264/MVC and texture blocks which are encoded by our novel approach. These texture based motion threads are encoded with the help of Spatio-Temporal Autoregressive (STAR) model. These motion threads covers the temporal and interview movement of macroblocks maintaining consistency while STAR model exploits the temporal and inter-view perceptual redundancy in neighborhood. The proposed scheme achieves average gain as high as 4.9 dB PSNR over H.264/MVC for given multi-view videos.

In this paper, a new multi-view coding (MVC) scheme is proposed and evaluated. The scheme offers improved low-delay view random access capability and at the same time comparable compression performance with respect to the reference multi-view coding scheme currently used. The proposed scheme uses the concept of multiple-resolution view coding, exploiting the trade-off between quantization distortion and downsampling distortion at changing bit-rates, which in turn provides improved coding efficiency. Bipredictive (B) coded views, used in the conventional MVC method, are replaced with predictive coded downscaled views, reducing the view dependency in a multi-view set and hence reducing the random view access delay, but preserving the compression performance at the same time. Results show that the proposed method reduces the view random access delay in a MVC system significantly, but has a similar objective and subjective performance with the conventional MVC method.
