Large parallel applications have heavily used MPI (Massage Passing Interface) collectives that support portable and efficient group communication operations. MPI_Bcast is one of the most commonly used MPI collectives that broadcast data to all processes of the communication domain. However, traditional software-based broadcast algorithms fail to fully utilize modern interconnection networks’ advanced features such as offloading collectives to the network hardware for efficient group communications. Besides, the semantic gap between MPI_Bcast and hardware multicast of underlying interconnects presents challenges for offload-based algorithms to accelerate MPI_Bcast for a wide range of message *** this paper, we propose a hardware-software co-design MPI_Bcast by efficiently leveraging the NIC-based collective offload provided by Tianhe-express interconnect, which completely precludes the involvement of CPU to accelerate message broadcast. We detail this broadcast mechanism that can be adaptively tuned to offload MPI_Bcast operations from the CPU to the NIC for various message and system sizes. In addition, we further propose a topology-aware broadcast design in conjunction with this offload method to significantly reduce the broadcast latency by constructing the optimal global inter-node communication tree. We implement and evaluate the proposed Tianhe-Express Offload-based Broadcast (TOB) design on Tianhe-2A and Tianhe-EP supercomputers. Extensive experiments have been conducted to evaluate TOB performance at both microbenchmark and application levels. Our solution offers up to 4.94x significant performance speedup at the microbenchmark level over state-of-the-art MPI libraries. For the application-level evaluation, our technique accelerates scientific applications by a maximum speedup of 1.34x.

This work implements a Hash Message Authentication Code (HMAC) to secure Sampled Values (SV) in the IEC 61850 protocol, addressing cyber-attack vulnerabilities in digital substations. Using Python’s Scapy, algorithms were developed to inject and capture multicast SV traffic. HMAC with SHA- 256 effectively protected against data tampering, allowing only authorized devices to authenticate messages. Experimental results confirmed real-time attack detection and mitigation. This research enhances SV message security in line with IEC 62351 guidelines.

We consider the minimum-delay multicast scheduling problem for switched beamforming systems. A salient characteristic of mmWave links, reflection, is considered, which enables opportunistic reduction of data dissemination delay. We formulate the problem as a mixed integer nonlinear programming, which is difficult to solve directly. Instead, we decompose the problem into a set of subproblems, by allocating a fixed path to each receiver for data reception. The optimal solution to each subproblem has a contiguous structure, and hence can be computed using a dynamic programming-based approach. We propose an optimal algorithm for the original problem based on the solutions to the subproblems. By simulation we show the outperformance of our algorithm over an optimal multicast scheduling policy without leveraging reflections and a broadcast baseline scheme.

In recent years, the rapid growth of network traffic and the emergence of new Internet applications have required optical networks to continuously improve their capacity and flexible transmission capability. Spatial division multiplexed elastic optical networks (SDM-EONs) have become the most promising core architectures for future optical networks with their fine granularity, high capacity, and high transmission rate. In the paper, we study the routing, modulation level, spectrum, and core allocation (MC-RMSCA) problem for multicast services in SDM-EONs, building a network model using all-optical multicast in SDM-EONs, and then propose two heuristic algorithms for the problem to solve MC-RMSCA in dynamic scenarios. Simulation results show that, compared with the shortest-path-tree-based routing, modulation level spectrum, and core allocation (SPT-RMSCA) algorithm, the subtree-assisted routing, modulation level spectrum, and core allocation (STA-RMSCA) algorithm performs better in terms of blocking probability and spectrum utilization.

Consider the max-min fair multi-group multicast beamforming problem in wireless networks, where the users with the same request are partitioned into a multicast group and served by the same beam from a multi-antenna base station (BS). The problem is non-convex and generally NP-hard. Due the channel estimation error, the perfect channel state information (CSI) is usually unavailable. The existing optimization-based methods either need the statistic information of estimation error or a time-consuming sample average approximation. In this paper, we propose a graph neural network (GNN) based structure, called multi-group multicast GNN (MMGNN), to learn an efficient robust multicast beamforming strategy based on the estimated channel without any statistic information. Benefiting from the wireless topology based network structure, MMGNN not only captures the interactions between users naturally but also can model the vital property of multicast transmission that the multicast rate is determined by the worst user in each multicast group. Moreover, by sharing the parameters across different users, MMGNN exhibits a pretty good scalability to different numbers of users and guarantees the permutation equivalence about the users. Numerical results show that MMGNN outper-forms a fully connected neural network and a widely used sample approximation based algorithm.

Collective communication primitives (CCPs), such as multicast and broadcast, are essential for many parallel and distributed applications. In response, this study compares a topology-oblivious algorithm underlying the implementation of CCPs in standard instances of MPI with two topology-aware implementations, based on the LLF and GLF algorithms, and an ideal hardware-assisted approach. By using real scientific applications, instead of synthetic traffic, our study reveals workload-dependent performance variations among CCP implementations; and highlights the importance of CCP algorithm selection in optimizing application performance in supercomputing environments.

Nowadays, the ultra-dense low earth orbit (LEO) satellite network has become a promising paradigm in the next generation mobile communication network. With the development of content centric communication, multicast technology also attracts much attention. In this paper, we consider the downlink multicast transmission in the ultra-dense LEO satellite network. Multiple LEO satellites provide multicast service for multiple ground user (GU) groups under their coverage, where each GU group requests the same content. To improve the multicast performance, we propose an optimal subchannel allocation and beamforming scheme to maximize the system max-min fair (MMF) capacity of GUs. By leveraging the many-to-many matching model, we obtain the optimal subchannel allocation solution, and we propose a successive convex approximation (SCA) based algorithm for the downlink beamforming in the matching process. The many-to-many matching algorithm is convergent to a stable solution after finite iterations. Simulation results show the superiority and the effectiveness of the proposed subchannel allocation and beamforming method compared with other baseline schemes.

multicast routing is a telecommunication technique that simultaneously sending data from one, or more source to several destination. Multimedia applications are widely used. These applications require several QoS constraints. This paper proposes a multi-constrained QoS multicast routing method using simulated annealing metaheuristic. The proposed algorithm minimizes the cost of multicast tree while satisfying bandwidth, delay, delay jitter, and packet loss constraints. In the proposed approach we use R-Path move method to construct neighbors. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm is better for cost performance, best multicast tree obtained, compared to others algorithms.

Network performance of multicast transmissions such as bandwidth, utilization and delay is very important to improve the quality of user experience and the above constraints have to be considered. Most of the current multicast protocol infrastructures use static routes, however, static routing policies provide potential convenience for attackers who can perform network sniffing or initiate DoS attacks. We propose a multi-constraint multicast routing mutation mechanism to enable dynamic changes in multicast routing while satisfying certain quality of service to achieve proactive multicast routing defense, which increases the attacker's attack cost and reduces the defender's defense overhead. In addition, for the high time complexity of the multicast tree generation algorithm, we propose a multi-controller multicast routing algorithm with multi-domains. We perform simulations and show that the defense performance of multicast routing is significantly improved after adopting this mechanism.

Coded caching has proven to be an effective technique to alleviate bottlenecks in wireless networks. By preemptively storing some content at the end users during off-peak hours, it creates multicasting opportunities that can be leveraged to reduce the peak rate when the network is congested. However, in a practical setting it is often necessary to update the cache contents dynamically based on the current request distributions and network configuration. This paper proposes a decentralized algorithm for updating the cache contents in coded caching systems. The proposed algorithm stores and transmits whole files, without splitting them, and users only rely on overheard messages to update their caches. The asymptotic performance of the proposed algorithm is derived analytically and simulations show that it outperforms the Least Frequently Used (LFU) eviction policy and the uniform memory allocation policy for a wide range of file popularity distributions. Additionally, they prove that the advantages of the proposed algorithm are not limited to a single cherry-picked scenario, but rather hold for various number of users, files, and cache sizes.
