Current schemes for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) are mainly client-driven. Thus, in the scenario of multiple users watching the same video, repeated subscription and data transmission results in an under-utilization of network bandwidth resources. Additionally, competition for limited network resources of individual users may motivate selfish behaviors, which leads to unfairness and sub-optimal utility of video services. In this paper, Multimedia Broadcast multicast Service (MBMS) in mobile edge networks for multi-bitrate video sessions is applied to overcome these limitations. We formulate a non-linear integer programming (NLIP) model, which jointly optimize bitrate adaptation and resource allocation for multiple users. This model takes video quality, playback interruptions, and quality oscillations as linear constraints to maximize multicast users' Quality of Experience (QoE). Due to NP-Hardness of this problem, we propose a heuristic greedy algorithm, which can work out the optimal or near-optimal solution with low time complexity. The evaluation results demonstrate that our method can achieve Pareto Optimality of the system utility, and maximize users' QoE while ensuring fairness.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently attracted increasing research interests due to its great potential in enhancing the energy and spectrum efficiency for wireless networks. In this paper, we shall investigate the downlink transmit power optimization problem for an IRS-assisted multigroup multicast system, where the beamformers at the base station (BS) and the phase shifts at the IRS are jointly optimized. We take into account the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of all users in each multicasting group as well as the constant-envelope reflection of all IRS elements. The formulated problem turns out to be a non-convex quadratically constrained bi-quadratic programming problem, due to the intricate coupling between the optimization variables and the non-convex constant-envelope constraints. To this end, we present the alternating optimization method with matrix lifting to decouple the optimization variables, followed by ensuring the feasibility of the rank-one constraints via introducing the difference-of-convex (DC) function representation. We develop an effective alternating algorithm to solve the joint optimization problem. Extensive simulation results show the superiority of the proposed algorithm in reducing the transmit power of multigroup multicast systems.

multicast transmission plays a vital role in reducing wireless data traffic. However, the conventional multicast beamformer design mainly relied on suboptimal solutions found by numerical solvers which failed to provide analytic design insights, due to the analytic intractability of the multicast beamformer design problem. In this paper, we explore a rank-one multicast beamformer design for a single group multicasting scenario and derive a closed-form solution to help how the channel parameters affect the beam direction and the achieved SNR. To this end, we first revisit the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) necessary condition of the single group multicasting problem. Then, we derive a closed-form solution for a multicast beamformer, which satisfies KKT necessary conditions, for given active constraints. Finally, we select the best beamformer among the ones from different active constraints. It is shown that the proposed multicast beamformer achieves better than or at least comparable performance to the existing sub-optimal solutions.

Education, business, industry, and health services have changed course suddenly with the unforeseen outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Governments issued strict procedures and rules mandating social distancing, banning large gatherings, and closing businesses and educational institutions to limit the virus' propagation. As a result, most educational activities migrated to online or hybrid teaching modalities, challenging the assumptions of conventional teaching and affecting teaching quality. Nevertheless, machine learning techniques can provide valuable insights to guide educational policies in the Covid-19 pandemic. The two main issues of higher education are: (a) what should be the mode of instruction in the ongoing health crisis? What are the health risks associated with on-campus education? And (b) if the mode of instruction is online or hybrid, what are the effects of online sessions on existing on-campus and country-wide network facilities? What are the solutions for network resource optimization? To answer these questions, we turned our attention to innovative machine learning techniques that have impacted every field of science and technology. We advance the idea of applying machine learning clustering techniques to form student communities in an edge network that can be facilitated with multicast routing to limit network congestion. Moreover, we propose and utilize machine learning classifiers to sort a person's risk based on their social distance from their contacts.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is among the promising architecture that can drive the need and versatility towards the future generation (xG) needs. In the future, support for network communication relies on the area of telemedicine, autonomous vehicles, and disaster recovery. In the disaster recovery case, there is a high possibility where the communication path is severed. multicast communication and DTN-friendly route algorithm are becoming suitable options to send a packet message to get a faster response and to see any of the nodes available for service, this approach could give burden to the core network. Also, during disaster cases, many people would like to communicate, receive help, and find family members. Flooding the already disturbed/severed network will further reduce communication performance efficiency even further. Thus, this study takes into consideration prioritization factors to allow networks to process and delivering priority content. For this purpose, the proposed technique introduces the Routable Prefix Identifier (RP-ID) that takes into account the prioritization factor to enable optimization in Delay Tolerant ICN communication.

The live broadcast business has developed rapidly in recent years, but low latency, smoothness, and high user quality of experience (QoE) are still the problems that we need to solve. At the same time, the arise of edge computing has made up for the lack of traditional cloud computing in live broadcast services and brought low-latency effects, but also brought a heavy burden to the edge network, making edge load balancing an important issue to be solved urgently. Meanwhile, the real-time and low-latency characteristics of live broadcast put forward higher requirements on the network, which increases the difficulty of load balancing optimization. Therefore, to cope with the development trend of adaptive live streaming and improve the QoE, this article first proposes an adaptive live streaming transmission framework under the edge network, which integrates edge service clusters, multicast, and client adaptive bitrate(ABR) algorithms. Then, we proposed a load optimization scheme for edge service clusters, focusing on the dynamics of load and transmission costs. According to the two factors directly affected by the ABR algorithm, i.e. edge server CPU load and bandwidth overhead, The dynamic overhead queue load-balancing algorithm is proposed. Compared with the other three load optimization algorithms, the simulation results show the superiority of our scheme in term of load balancing and overhead.

Traffic engineering (TE) and efficient network updating have been considered as separate problems in previous SDN research. Traffic engineering mostly focuses on static traffic and does not consider the rerouting overheads to support dynamic traffic. Efficient network updating assumes the new routing is provided by TE and focuses on minimizing only the rerouting overheads, and therefore, the improved new routing with bandwidth consumption similar to the new routing from TE but much lower rerouting overheads has not been explored. In this paper, we explore Multi-tree Low-overhead multicast Rerouting (MLMR) to jointly solve both problems for SDN multicast. We prove that MLMR is NP-hard and design a new approximation algorithm, named multicast Rerouting and Update Scheduling Algorithm (MRUSA). Equipped with the notions of deterioration indicator, motivator, and inhibitor, MRUSA provides incremental tree updating and multi-tree update scheduling to address the trade-off between the bandwidth consumption and rerouting overheads. Frequent rerouting due to tiny changes of multicast users can be effectively avoided, because rerouting time for each group can be correctly identified. Simulations and implementation on real SDNs with YouTube traffic manifest that the total cost can be reduced by at least 35% compared with SPT and ST, and the computation time is small for massive SDN.

To answer the sharp surge in the number of devices requiring the same multimedia content, an effective management of group-communications (i.e., multicast) in current fifth generation (5G) network appears urgent. Device-to-device (D2D) communications can greatly improve the performance of a multicast transmission as long as effective countermeasures are taken to the several security vulnerabilities they may be suffering. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for the secure D2D-aided delivery of multicast services that exploits the RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) encryption algorithm for the protection of data transmitted in D2D. The main benefit of this approach is the possibility of delivering the required service in multicast also for D2D transmissions by means of properly selected relay nodes that work as heads of each D2D cluster. Simulation results testify to the effectiveness of the proposed solution in providing security assurance and limited resource consumption.

Social Networking like WhatsApp application is popular media for communication in today's world. These applications are based on multicast and broadcast communication. multicast communication provides access control over selected users and governs the communication within their own space. This is an example of group based communication paradigm. Quality of multicast communication in wireless networks depends on various issues like scalability, channel allocation and error control. Most part of data used between the groups includes video and multimedia data. Hence multicasting of video streams over wireless network requires significantly diverse error control approach from those used in wired computer networks. Authors discuss the Adaptive Forward Error Correction (AFEC) algorithm for streaming the video efficiently over multicast wireless network. AFEC adjusts the level of redundancy packets depending on the state of network. Thus this algorithm uses the redundancy packets for error control in the wireless network. AFEC decreases the redundancy when throughput is high at receiver side and increases the redundancy when receiver has low throughput to correct the error in communication. Network Loss Ratio (NLR) is used to estimate the packet loss probability and it influences the AFEC decision of redundancy. Network simulator NS2 is used to implement the AFEC algorithm to control the error in multicast video streaming. Results show that AFEC consumes less bandwidth than conventional FEC algorithm.
