The proliferation of graphs as a key data structure for big-data analytics has heightened the demand for efficient graph processing. To meet this demand, prior works have proposed processing in memory (PIM) solutions in 3D-stacked DRAMs, such as Hybrid Memory Cubes (HMCs). However, PIM-based architectures, despite considerable improvement over conventional architectures, continue to be hampered by the presence of high inter-cube communication traffic. In turn, this trait has limited the underlying processing elements from fully capitalizing on the memory bandwidth an HMC has to offer. In this paper, we show that it is possible to combine multiple messages emitted from a source node into a single multicast message, thus reducing the inter-cube communication without affecting the correctness of the execution. Hence, we propose to add multicast support at source and in-network routers to reduce vertex-update traffic. Our experimental evaluation shows that, by combining multiple messages emitted at the source, it is possible to achieve an average speedup of 2.4× over a highly optimized PIM-based solution and reduce energy consumption by 3.4×, while incurring a modest power overhead of 6.8%.

The spectrum grid of the traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network is fixed, so it has the shortcomings of low spectrum utilization and poor flexibility. Based on this, elastic optical network (EON) came into being. Compared with the traditional WDM network, the EON has a flexible spectrum grid with high network flexibility and can provide different spectrums for different services. But the EON still has the problem of load balancing. In order to further optimize the EON, this article uses the Least Connections algorithm to solve the EON load balancing problem, taking into account the different server load capacity to improve it. In addition, to further improve the performance of EON, this paper combines genetic algorithm, improved least connections algorithm and ant colony algorithm to propose a new algorithm LC-GAACO. The simulation results show that the LC-GAACO algorithm will consume more optical transceivers while taking into account load balancing, but the network load balancing effect, network spectrum utilization, and blocking rate are better than traditional algorithms.

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) can adaptively select the appropriate video bitrate for mobile users. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) scenario is of great benefit to improve the performance of mobile networks by providing computing and storage capabilities. And the utilization of spectrum resources can be improved by multicast transmission, but the performance of the multicast transmission will be directly affected by the selected grouping algorithm. Therefore, we propose a grouping algorithm for DASH multicast in MEC to complete a more reasonable grouping of users, thereby improving the Quality of Experience (QoE) of mobile users. QoE is not only our optimization goal but also the grouping basis of the algorithm proposed in this paper. We dynamically group multiple users in the same multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) area in three dimensions based on the three components of QoE. The simulation results show that the proposed grouping algorithm performs well in QoE and fairness.

In this paper we design DCMA, a novel multicast membership management scheme for data center networks. Unlike traditional protocols like IGMP/MLD, DCMA leverages the characteristics of data center multicast application and the emerging software defined networking (SDN) technique to manage multicast members in an easier and better way. multicast application master delivers the membership to the SDN controller, and the SDN controller assigns the group addresses in a coordinated way to minimize the forwarding table size in switches. In particular, by formulating the multicast group address allocation problem and capturing the relationship among forwarding entries in different switches, we design both a batch algorithm and an incremental algorithm to allocate the multicast group addresses. Evaluations based on real-world traces show that, DCMA can save almost half multicast forwarding entries in switches compared with random multicast address allocation.

The video streaming platforms have recently evolved to provide diversified services, including live video, video on demand, and TV shows premiere. The traditional unicast method may cause a waste of bandwidth when many users watch the same video contents at the same time. In this study, we realized a hybrid unicast and multicast adaptive streaming system. The system uses ROUTE (Real-time Object delivery over Unidirectional Transport) combined with the MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) to simultaneously satisfy the needs of unicast and multicast users. We use the SHVC (Scalable High-efficiency Video Coding) to generate high-quality video of different bitrates. The QoE (Quality of Experience) function is measured by bitrate, PSNR, and server bandwidth. The proposed adaptive algorithm dynamically allocates the bitrates of unicast and multicast users and achieves optimal average viewing quality. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm effectively improves the system's QoE under various bandwidth models compared to the conventional method. In the hybrid multicast and unicast scenario, the PSNR for the stable, incremental, and decreasing bandwidth models are increased by 0.79 dB, 4.92 dB, and 7.88 dB, respectively. The average quality switching frequency of users is also decreased.

This paper investigates the problem of multicast communication in wireless mesh networks (WMNs). The proposed algorithm uses the multi-layer scheme, in which the multicast data is encoded into multiple layers, to handle bandwidth heterogeneous receivers. Additionally, it exploits two techniques to increase the number of obtained layers by the receivers, namely network coding and wireless broadcast advantage (WBA). Incorporating WBA necessitates determining the children of the nodes, which complicates the design. To solve the problem in polynomial time, the network is partitioned into some groups, and each group is considered independently. The grouping technique is also used to determine the obtained layers by each receiver. The simulations demonstrate that our algorithm considerably outperforms the previous approaches.

Output Forms of Packets in a multicast Session Using Network Coding With R Flow

A one-session multicast network, on which a coding scheme with Network Coding is defined, was implemented with a maximum common flow of $r$ -packets arriving simultaneously at $\vert T\vert $ sink nodes. Determining how to order the $r$ -packets that emerge from the source node $s$ through their output $n$ -links, constitutes a combinatorial problem. In this work, the set of all the possible output configurations is constructed, where each configuration is a vector of packets tags of length equal to $n$ . Each tag has a length equal to $r$ . Through a combinatorial algorithm on the set of possible output configurations, a path is carried out on the graph representing the one-session multicast network. The path is based on a topological ordering of the multicast graph that allowed us finding all possible ways to order the output of the $r$ -packets from $s$ to the sink nodes in $T$ . An ordering configuration based on Network Coding is valid, if the coding of packets is achieved through a linear combination in the coding nodes and the decoding of packets in the sink nodes. This validation verifies, then, a one-session multicast solution. The proposal of this work is independent of the network topology, the maximum flow value, and the size of the packets.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) reforms the cloud paradigm by bringing unprecedented computing capacity to the vicinity of mobile users at the mobile network edge. This provides end-users with swift and powerful computing, energy efficiency, storage capacity, mobility- and context-awareness support. Furthermore, provisioning virtualized network services in MEC can improve user service experience, simplify network service deployments, and ease network resource management. However, user requests usually arrive into the system dynamically and different user requests may have different resource demands. How to optimize and guarantee the performance of MEC is of significant importance and challenging. In this paper, we study the problem of online NFV-enabled multicasting in an MEC network with resource capacity constraints on both cloudlets and links. We first devise an approximation algorithm for the cost minimization problem for a single NFV-enabled multicast request admission We then propose an online algorithm with a provable competitive ratio for the online throughput maximization problem where NFV-enabled multicast requests arrive one by one without the knowledge of future request arrivals. We admit the requests through placing or sharing VNF instances of network functions in their service chains to meet their computing and bandwidth resource demands, and we introduce a novel cost model to capture the dynamic usages of different resources and perform network resource allocations based on the proposed cost model. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms through experimental simulations. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are promising.
