We consider the problem of setting up a multicast connection of minimum cost using network coding. It is well-known that this can be posed in the form of a convex program. Our contribution is an asynchronous algorithm for solving the optimization problem, in analogy to the well-known distributed asynchronous Bellman-Ford algorithm for routing. Furthermore, we provide extensive simulation results showing fast convergence despite the lack of any central clock in the network and robustness with respect to link- or node failures.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) exploits the frequency selective property of a wireless communication channel by allocating subchannels to individual users. Conventional multicast systems, however, suffer from diversified channel conditions among users. The main contribution of this paper is to maximize the multicast rate of one multicast session while being fair among users and build a general framework for resource allocation for multi multicast sessions. By assuming availability of channel state information, we study resource allocation in a multicast OFDMA system. We first study one multicast session system and solve the resource allocation problem in two steps. We first propose a novel subchannel allocation algorithm by allocating each subchannel to a group of users in the multicast session based on their subchannels gains. Second, a bit loading algorithm is also proposed. We further study multiple multicast transmission systems and propose a greedy algorithm for resource allocation to achieve proportional fairness among sessions. Finally, we numerically show that proposed algorithms outperform conventional multicast schemes and previous works for one multicast scenario and conventional multicast schemes for multi multicast scenario.

The use of network coding has been shown to improve throughput in input-queued multicast switches, but not without costs of computational complexity and delays. In this paper, we investigate the design of efficient online network coding algorithms in a switch with multicast traffic. We present Haste, an online opportunistic coding algorithm designed to streamline the computation when network coding is involved in a network switch with multicast traffic. Haste enjoys the advantage of incurring no decoding delays, which reduces packet delays compared with existing network coding algorithms on switches. We have conducted extensive simulations to show the efficiency of Haste, and implemented an emulation framework to emulate input-queued switches using asynchronous network sockets. Our emulation framework is able to process actual UDP traffic using Haste with online network coding, and to show convincing evidence that Haste is suitable for practical use, and is beneficial in multicast switches.

Reducing energy consumption and extending network lifetime in multicasting are two important issues in the study of wireless ad hoc networks. A number of distributed algorithms have been proposed recently that are either focused on reducing energy consumption or focused on extending network lifetime. However, there has not been a systematical study on the trade-off between these two issues. In this paper, a distributed algorithm, D-REMiT (A distributed algorithm for refining energy-efficiency of multicast trees in wireless ad hoc networks), is presented. The algorithm D-REMiT follows the general criterion focused on the metric TEC (Total Energy Consumption) while its refining is guided by the metric SL (System Lifetime) of multicast trees. This nice integration of the two metrics in the algorithm seems to well balance the two metrics of multicast trees, and improves SL of multicast trees efficiently with little sacrifice on TEC.

In a wireless network, transmissions from the various nodes have to be scheduled so as to avoid mutual interference. The pattern of interference induced by active transmissions depends on the routes along which the link-transmissions have to be scheduled; i.e., the interference that scheduling has to accommodate depends on the routing. Both routing and scheduling are mechanisms to promote the efficient use of network capacity, and in view of their interdependence, it is important to consider their joint optimization. Considering one without the other can create limitations for each function and is non-optimal. We develop an algorithm based on the column-generation technique of Linear Programming for the joint optimization of routing and scheduling for multicast flows for maximizing network capacity, and demonstrate the benefit of the joint optimization in increased capacity over the case where the routing and scheduling are separately considered.

A torus topology is widely used in multicomputer design because of its many features. This paper presents an efficient path-based multicast algorithm in wormhole-routed 2D torus networks. The proposed algorithm can achieve a high degree of parallelism and low communication latency over a wide range of traffic loads. Since, it relies on a new approach that divides the destinations into many groups; hence the name Ready Groups (RG for short) algorithm. The RG algorithm relies on a new approach that divides the 2D torus network into multiple subnetworks to nearly balance the communication load in different parts of the torus. The RG algorithm requires only two start-ups irrespective of the destination nodes involved and most of the destination nodes receive the multicast message in parallel. From the destination groups in each subnetwork, the nearest destination node to the source node is selected to become a leader. In the first startup, the source node sends the message to the leaders. In the second start-up, every leader in turn sends the received message to the rest of the destinations in its own group. A routing function is designed and is used as a basis for the RG algorithm. Results from extensive simulations on different torus networks are discussed to compare the RG algorithm with previous algorithms.

We present an asynchronous and reliable multicast framework for a scalable multimedia system. An unequal error protection (UEP) transmission scheme employing a layered packetization structure and rateless codes is proposed. With this scheme, asynchronous data reception and guaranteed quality-of-service (QoS) can be achieved at the same time. Furthermore, a novel allocation algorithm is developed within the layered multicast framework, which can minimize the system cost in terms of the number of transmitted packets. Simulation results show that the proposed rateless-codes-based transmission scheme works well for asynchronous multicasting to heterogeneous receivers, and can be applied to a wide range of multimedia applications.

In this paper we are proposing a technique for encrypting `high volume data streams' that are sent over communication links throughout various networks. High volume data streams refer to applications such as audio-video conferencing, or more specifically Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), and usage of the File Transfer Protocol or FTP. In most cases when data related to these applications is transferred from one peer to another, the main emphasis always tends to be to transfer these forms of data as fast as possible. As a result of this, the security issue is at times overlooked. This paper is putting forward a technique that might be an answer to the security problem of transferring data of this sort.

A cross-layer design along with an optimal resource allocation framework is formulated for wireless fading networks, where the nodes perform network coding. The aim is to jointly optimize end-to-end multicast rates, network code design variables, broadcast link flows, link capacities, average power consumption, and short-term power allocation policies. As in the conventional routing paradigm, the cross-layer optimization problem with network coding is non-convex in general. It is proved however, that dual decomposition is optimal so long as the fading at each wireless link is a continuous random variable. This result is leveraged to develop a subgradient algorithm for network control. The algorithm is asynchronous, whereby the dual updates at the physical layer can be affordably performed with a certain delay with respect to the resource allocation tasks in upper layers. Moreover, the long-term average values of multicast end-to-end rates, virtual flows, broadcast link flows, link capacities, and power consumption are shown to converge to near-optimal ones.

This paper aims to optimize joint overall video quality and traffic performance of multirate multicast of scalable video streaming accessing hybrid wired/wireless paths. In order to guarantee layered utility maximization over tiered wired/wireless coded networks, we propose a joint source and network flow optimization scheme where each scalable layer is tailored in an incremental order and finds jointly optimal multicast paths and associated rates. It not only achieves the highest sustainable layered video quality, but also takes into account both path-overlapping allocation for different receivers which takes advantage of network coding and the wireless link contention in a shared transmission medium. The convex programming is imposed on the total variation minimization of layered rate-distortion. Using primal decomposition and the primal-dual approach, we develop a decentralized algorithm with two levels of optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm not only provides better video quality with optimal layered access for heterogeneous receivers, but benefits the asymptotic capacity of a hierarchical "hybrid" wired/wireless architecture in a scalable sense.
