The search for optimal multicast subgraphs for network coding is considered. We assume unit link capacities and binary flow rates. In the first version of the problem, there is no constraint on the acyclicity of the subgraphs, whereas such constraints are imposed in the second version. These problems are known to be NP-hard. We provide heuristics to deal with both versions of the problem. The heuristics are based on well known optimization algorithms and they are therefore easy to implement. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs close to the lower bounds obtained from relaxed solutions.

With network coding, two data packets are transformed into one by a simple XOR-operation. The transformed packet is transmitted and each original packet can be retrieved at its destination node through a similar XOR-operation. Network coding is an important research topic as it radically challenges existing networking paradigms. In this paper we provide an analytical study of the impact network coding has on the delivery of real-time packets (i.e., packets with deadlines). We model a router as a queueing system where packets arrive from two independent Poisson flows. We obtain an exact expression for the goodput of the system and study the goodput gain that can be achieved by performing network coding. We verify the validity of the model through simulations.

The growth of real-time content streaming over the Internet has resulted in the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) approaches for scalable content delivery. In such P2P streaming systems, each peer maintains a playout buffer of content chunks which it attempts to fill by contacting other peers in the network. The objective is to ensure that the chunk to be played out is available with high probability while keeping the buffer size small. Given that a particular peer has been selected, a policy is a rule that suggests which chunks should be requested by the peer from other peers. We consider consider a number of recently suggested policies consistent with buffer minimization for a given target of skip free playout. We first study a rarest-first policy that attempts to obtain chunks farthest from playout, and a greedy policy that attempts to obtain chunks nearest to playout. We show that they both have similar buffer scalings (as a function of the number of peers and the target skip-free probability). We then study a hybrid policy which achieves order sense improvements over both policies and can achieve order optimal performance. We validate our results using simulations.

Publish/subscribe middleware is being increasingly used to devise large-scale critical systems. Although several reliable publish/subscribe solutions have been proposed, none of them properly address the problem of assuring message dissemination even if network omissions happen without breaking any temporal constraints. In order to fill this gap, we have investigated how to guarantee a resilient and timely event dissemination despite of message losses. The contribution of this paper is on proposing a FEC approach, where encoding functionality is placed at the root and on a subset of interior nodes in the multicast tree, combined to a gossiping algorithm. Simulation-based experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach allows all the interested subscribers to receive all the published messages and the adopted resiliency mean does not affect the timeliness of the multicast protocol.

We develop new algebraic algorithms for scalar and vector network coding. In vector network coding, the source multicasts information by transmitting vectors of length L, while intermediate nodes process and combine their incoming packets by multiplying them with L × L coding matrices that play a similar role as coding coefficients in scalar coding. Our algorithms for scalar network jointly optimize the employed field size while selecting the coding coefficients. Similarly, for vector coding, our algorithms optimize the length L while designing the coding matrices. These algorithms apply both for regular network graphs as well as linear deterministic networks.

A class of wireless multicast utility optimization problems are considered. Assume network utility is only a function of link throughput and nodes' transmission power. Under a set of physical layer assumptions, the impact of physical and data-link layer configurations to the upper layers in a wireless network can be characterized using a configuration graph. Network layer utility optimization can consequently be carried out via iterations that optimize network layer algorithms over the configuration graph and revise physical, data-link layer configurations to improve the configuration graph. For a class of wireless multicast networks with optimal network coding, the number of point-to-multipoint links involved in network utility optimization is only polynomial, as opposed to exponential, in the number of nodes. This leads to a reduced complexity in exhaustive searching algorithms, such as optimal utility maximization. Consequently, simulations of these algorithms for moderate-sized networks become feasible.

We propose a unified deblocking/error-concealment algorithm for simultaneously alleviating blockiness and restoring lost blocks. Blockiness and block loss are two of the most frequently encountered artifacts for block-DCT based visual signal coding and transmission. The problem of error-concealment and deblocking is formulated as block-wise expectation estimation processes conditioned on available pixels in a local neighborhood. A nonparametric kernel regression approach is used for approximating the conditional probability and thus the conditional expectation of each image block. Missing blocks are restored and blockiness are suppressed with a single pass of the algorithm. The algorithm is highly efficient in that only block-wise additions and multiplications in pixel domain within a local neighborhood are involved. Experimental results are provided to justify the effectiveness of the proposed unified error-concealment/deblocking algorithm.

This paper addresses the problem of clustering heterogeneous clients in IPTV services over lossy networks. The delivery of the same stream to clients with different capabilities or access networks is surely suboptimal in terms of average quality for the population of receivers. Instead, we propose that the streaming servers deliver distinct multicast streams to different subsets of clients. We formulate an optimization problem where the receivers are clustered depending on the quality of their connection so that the average video quality in the IPTV system is maximized. Then we propose a novel algorithm for determining optimally the clusters, as well as the source and channel rate allocation in each of the clusters. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to maximize the average quality in the system when each of the servers transmits information to a distinct cluster. In particular, we show that the proposed solution outperforms baseline schemes that serve all clients with the same multicast stream, as it is commonly the case in practical systems.

To satisfy the multiple QoS constraints in different services, we divide a QoS routing problem into some multicast routing problem oriented the types of QoS service callings. Every multicasting routing problem is a Steiner tree problem. In this paper, we propose a dynamic QoS routing mechanism (DQ) to support multiple Steiner trees. We also propose a protocol to distinguish between the types of services and make a load balance of the satellite networks. Our simulation results show that our mechanism consume less sources and provide more QoS guarantees than previous routing algorithms. Furthermore, our mechanism has a limited overhead and can support a large number of service callings.
