This paper presents the design and implementation of deterministic linear network coding algorithm according to the structural features of HM-ALM, which is a high-quality application layer multicast system. Through experiments the algorithm characteristics and its impact on multicast performance are analyzed. The experimental results show that the cost of network coding algorithm is related to the regularity and the size of packets. And the adjustment of these two parameters can change the time and bandwidth of encoding and decoding. At the same time, network coding can increase the system flexibility, reduces the impact of node failure on the system performance, and it can improve the system robustness.

We consider directed acyclic networks with multiple sources and multiple terminals where each source generates one i.i.d. random process over a finite field and all the terminals want to recover the sum of these random processes. The different source processes are assumed to be independent. The solvability of such networks has been considered in some previous works. In this paper we investigate on the capacity of such networks, referred as sum-networks, and present some bounds in terms of min-cut, and the numbers of sources and terminals.

A wiretap network with errors occurred on some edges is called a erroneous wiretap networks, for which we propose a nested code approach. Given a linear network code for an erroneous wiretap network, we derive the necessary and sufficient condition for a nested code to combat errors on d edges and prevent eavesdropping from μ edges. Furthermore, we prove that using nested codes the maximum rate at which the source can multicast information reliably and securely to all sink nodes is ω-2d-μ, where w is the minimum of the maximum flows of all the sinks. Finally, we propose two algorithms to construct nested codes that can achieve the maximum rate.

Peer-to-peer networks are immensely popular, but bootstrapping them usually requires centralized infrastructure. In fully decentralized environments such as mobile ad hoc networks, the use of centralized solutions are not possible. This paper presents a method of bootstrapping P2P overlay networks running on MANETs, and demonstrates a Java implementation of the algorithm. Simulation results show that the algorithm performs well and the implementation confirms the feasibility of the algorithm.

The reliability and distance of Power Line Communication (PLC) are the most important factors, which limit the application of PLC in practice seriously. This paper discusses the specialties and the methods of building up the PLC networks, uses an improved Dynamic Ant Colony System algorithm (DACS) in dynamic routing of PLC networks, and the multi-path storage technology is given. The improved DACS enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of dynamic routing in two aspects, that is the best tours and the worst tours. A dynamic penalty on worst tours will open up chances for ants to navigate, limit intentions and provide cautions in an ant's decision to move. And ants can get better search guidance by concentrating only the best tours from all groups. The simulation and experimentation indicate that the improved DACS provides an effective dynamic routing method for the expansion of PLC. It is an effective method of improving the reliability of PLC.

This paper studies the design and analysis of multiresolution vector quantization (MRVQ) for broadcast channels. Given a broadcast system with MRVQ, a random index assignment, and a coded broadcast channel, we first obtain a closed-form formula for the weighted end-to-end distortion (EED) of the system. Based on the formula, an iterative algorithm is then proposed for designing optimal MRVQ for the broadcast system. Experimental results demonstrate that multiresolution quantizers jointly designed with channel conditions by the proposed algorithm significantly reduce the weighted EED in comparison with multiresolution quantizers designed without reference to channel conditions.

An unequal error protection (UEP) transmission scheme is proposed for multimedia multicasting systems employing a priority encoding transmission (PET)-based packetization structure combined with rateless codes. Outage probability is analyzed for the layered multicast framework. A novel transmission scheme is proposed which is capable of minimizing the transmission cost while simultaneously guaranteeing outage probability constraints. Simulation results show that our proposed transmission scheme performs well in a multicasting system with transmission deadlines and asynchronous access start times.

Network coding has recently attracted significant attention as its new paradigm promises to benefit various areas of communication and networks. The benefits come at a cost since encoding operations are required at intermediate nodes, and decoding operations are required at destination nodes. In some applications, the receive ends (the destinations) cannot, or may not want to, perform complex decoding operations. Hence, it is desirable to design network codes that can be decoded with a minimal complexity. We propose a design algorithm that results in network codes with a lower decoding complexity. This is achieved by minimizing the number of operations at the sinks to recover data sent by the source. Ideally, the sinks just receive “native” packets (packets that are in their original form) and hence only require perhaps some “shuffling” (permutation) operations. To achieve maximum throughput, in general, the ideal case does not happen too often. Hence there is a need to find low complexity decoding (LCD) network codes. We make use of a concept known as information decomposition to classify different information flows on all the links in a network. A greedy search algorithm examines the information flows on the links to the sinks and assigns global coding vectors in such a way that the resultant network code is a LCD network code, in other words, fewer operations, compared to other network codes, are required to recover data transmitted by the source. We define a complexity measure for the decoding operations and investigate the performance of LCD codes and compare the decoding complexity of LCD codes with that of network codes obtained by the conventional polynomial time algorithm. We demonstrate, by using 500 random networks with 50 nodes, that the average decoding complexity of our network codes is about 20 folds lower than that of the conventional network codes. The experiment also demonstrates that the number of “native” packets arriving at the sinks in our LCD

Broadcasting multiple scalable video streams over wireless broadband access networks in real time is a challenging problem, because of the limited channel capacity and variable bit rate of the videos. The difficulty is further increased in the presence of receiver buffer size limitations which may introduce buffer overflow possibilities. The multicast/Broadcast Service feature of mobile WiMAX network is a promising technology for providing wireless video broadcast services. In this article, we describe a substream selection problem which arises when multiple scalable video streams are broadcast based on the multicast/Broadcast Service feature to a number of buffer size constrained receivers. We first show that the problem is NP-Complete and design a polynomial time approximation algorithm based on convex optimization and dynamic programming techniques. We mathematically prove that the solution obtained through our algorithm is always within a constant factor of the optimal solution. Through simulation we show that under real time requirements our algorithm provides solutions which are within 1 dB of the optimal solutions.

We present a polynomial time algorithm for multicasting rate h to N receivers over deterministic networks. Our algorithm requires intermediate network nodes to perform coding operations over vectors of a finite length L, through multiplication with L × L binary coding matrices that play the same role as coding coefficients over graphs. Our code design consists in selecting these matrices so that each receiver is able to recover the source information. As a special case, we provide an alternative construction for a unicast algorithm over deterministic networks.
