In this paper, we investigate how Multiple Description Coding (MDC) can improve the user's satisfaction for a group of heterogeneous destinations for video multicast over wireless ad hoc networks. Specifically, we explore the independent-description property of MDC with multiple paths to improve the user's satisfaction. In our approach, the assignment of multiple description (MD) video is randomly done by a multicast source node. Based on the assignment of MD video, the multicast source constructs multiple multicast trees accordingly. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach can achieve higher user's satisfaction regardless of the multicast group size.

Resource utilization is an important issue that needs to be taken into account when providing recovery mechanism in networks. In this paper, we investigate the recovery scheme for multi-layer network which cannot only manage the operation confusion among each layer, but also reserve network resources effectively. Then, we proposed an algorithm that adapts the concept of multi-layer approach to multicast protection in order to recover the failures and reduce network reserved resources at the same time. In our design, four types of failure, i.e. optical link failure, optical node failure, IP link failure and IP node failure are considered. The simulation results show that our algorithm can provide multicast protection which uses less reserved resources compared to the traditional shortest hop algorithm. The difference will be more significant if our algorithm is implemented in the network topology with high average node degree.

Large-scale deployment of multicast applications is limited by the number of states that are set in routers for multicast groups. As a new approach to multicast state reduction, aggregated multicast forces multiple multicast groups sharing a common distribution tree. An ant colony optimization algorithm to aggregated multicast is proposed. Inspired by bin packing problem, relative fullness is used as an important component to define fitness function. To improve the algorithm's convergence time, heuristic information is introduced according to changes of aggregated trees' bandwidth waste rate. After each iteration a new pheromone update rule is proposed. Simulation results show that this algorithm performs well in scenarios with bigger bandwidth waste rate or larger network scale. Compared with greedy algorithm by running for the same amount of time and in the same network topology, the algorithm has better optimization performance.

Multiple description coding (MDC) generates multiple independent bit-streams, where the multiple bitstreams are referred to as MD (multiple descriptions). Moreover, MDC enables a useful reproduction of the signal when any description is received correctly. In this paper, a heuristic multicast algorithm that exploits this salient property of MDC along with multiple disjoint paths for improving the userpsilas satisfaction for a group of heterogeneous destinations in wireless ad hoc networks is proposed. Simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the userpsilas satisfaction irrespective of the number of destinations in the multicast group.

The problem of how to optimally allocate available resources (e.g., bandwidth and power) in OFDM-based multicast wireless systems is important. Taking the maximization of system throughput as the design objective, an efficient resource allocation scheme is proposed for such systems under constraints on total system bandwidth and transmit power at the base station. Different from existing methods in the literature, our solution also considers the issue of fair resource utilization among multicast groups by guaranteeing minimum numbers of subchannels to be assigned to individual groups according to their respective channel conditions and group sizes. Once the subcarrier allocation is accomplished, the power allocation is performed in a water-filling fashion. The proposed algorithm distributes the throughput more flexibly and fairly between groups and, at the same time, still achieves a high total sum rate. The potential of our approach is confirmed by numerical results.

With the ever-increasing wireless multicast data applications recently, considerable efforts have focused on the large scale heterogeneous wireless multicast, especially those with large propagation delays, which means the feedbacks arriving at the source node are somewhat outdated and harmful to the control actions. To attack the above problem, this paper describes a novel, autonomous, and predictive wireless multicast flow control scheme, the so-called proportional, integrative plus neural network (PINN) predictive technique, which includes two components: the PI flow controller located at the wireless multicast source has explicit rate algorithm to regulate the transmission rate; and the neural network part located at the middle branch node predicts the available buffer occupancy for those longer delay receivers. The ultimate sending rate of the multicast source is the expected receiving rates computed by PI controller based on the consolidated feedback information, and it can be accommodated by its participating branches. This network-assisted property is different from the existing control schemes in that neural network controller can predict the buffer occupancy caused by those long delay receivers, which probably cause irresponsiveness of a wireless multicast flow. This active scheme makes the control more responsive to the network status, therefore, the rate adaptation can be in a timely manner for the sender to react to network congestion quick. We analyze the theoretical aspects of the proposed algorithm, show how the control mechanism can be used to design a controller to support wireless multi-rate multicast transmission based on feedback of explicit rates.

In wireless multicast, the receivers are interested in obtaining only a subset of the packets transmitted by the access node. Consequently, it is intuitively assumed that random network coded packet retransmissions will result in a lower bandwidth efficiency compared to opportunistic network coded retransmissions as the former involves the delivery of unwanted packets. In the first part of this paper, we show, through simulations, that the random network coded retransmission (RNCR) scheme outperforms the opportunistic network coded retransmission (ONCR) scheme in terms of bandwidth efficiency in a wide range of multicast settings. Motivated by this result, we propose an adaptive algorithm that can dynamically select, from the RNCR and ONCR schemes, the one that is expected to achieve a better performance for each multicast frame. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm almost achieves the optimal performance that can be obtained by combining these two retransmission schemes.

Multistage switching fabrics are the most efficient method for scaling packet switches to very large numbers of ports. This article concerns the Clos/Benes network, which is the lowest-cost switching fabric known to yield operation free of internal blocking. To achieve this, we had to successfully combine switch fabric architecture, multipath routing, and internal buffering. We present an architecture for which we have examined the necessary conditions for freedom from blocking for a multipath cell distribution algorithm. Using NS-2 simulator, we verify operation free of internal blocking for unicast and evaluate blocking and various cell distribution methods for multicast traffic.

We propose a resource allocation algorithm for OFDM system to provide QoS guarantee for unicast and multicast service concurrently. The optimization objective is to maximize the sum rate of the unicast service under the constraint of both the total power and the minimal rate provision of the multicast service, which can be solved by traditional two-step approach. To decrease the complexity, a greedy-based algorithm is proposed. According to the theoretical analysis and the simulation results, the performance of the proposed algorithm is close to the two-step approach meanwhile the complexity is effectively decreased. In conclusion, the proposed algorithm can balance the performance and the complexity well and so is suitable to be applied to practical scenario.

Multimedia applications are expected to guarantee end-to-end quality of service (QoS) and are characterized by stringent constraints on delay, delay-jitter, bandwidth, cost, etc. In the litterature, we observe that Kruskal's algorithm is limited to minimal (maximal) spanning unconstrained tree. In this paper, we extend Kruskal's algorithm to incorporate the delay bound constraint. Consequently, we propose a novel algorithm, called EKRUS (Extended Kruskal), for constructing multicast trees. The EKRUS' distinguishing features consists in a better management of Kruskal's priority queues, and in the provision of edge priority aggregation. Preliminary results show that our proposed EKRUS algorithm performs as good as the best well-known algorithms (such as the DDMC, DMCTc algorithms) while exhibiting better complexity. Furthermore, we believe that EKRUS is well suited to actual implementation in networks requiring support for multicast communication.
