A multicast packet is delivered to multiple users after copying in a multicast node, so the multicast Quality of Service (QoS) is based on the performances of all receivers due to copy mechanism. A favorite multicast service is more important than other multicast services because it has more users than others. Therefore, this paper proposes a copy number based multicast scheduling algorithm in Broadband Banyan Network (BBN) to support better QoS to favorite multicast services. BBN is an extension of Banyan switching network to support a copy mechanism in switching network. When a multicast packet contends with other packets because of limited output ports in a BBN, the BBN selects multicast packets with the copy number of multicast packet. By doing so, the proposed scheduling algorithm supports better QoS to more used multicast service.

In IEEE 802.11, multicast protocol is based on the basic access procedure of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA). This protocol does not provide any recovery mechanism for multicast frames. As a result, transmitted multicast frames may be lost due to collisions or errors. Recently, several reliable multicast protocols at MAC layer have been proposed for 802.11. They can be classified into two categories: one is based on negative feedback (NFB-based) and the other is based on positive feedback (PFB-based). After analyzing the problems with existing reliable multicast MAC protocols, we propose a novel PFB-based multicast protocol, namely DPMM (Double Piggyback Mode multicast). The protocol piggybacks the ACK in the CTS frame and piggybacks the priority information in the DATA frames. With DPMM, ACK packets are eliminated and collisions of control frames are avoided. A grouping algorithm using RSS (Received signal strength) measurement is also developed to further improve upon DPMM. Simulation results, using the OPNET, confirm that the improvements are encouraging.

A location-based reliable multicast algorithm for mobile ad hoc networks is proposed in this paper. A grid network with geographical location information is divided into a high-channel subnetwork and a low-channel subnetwork according to labels of grids. Then destination nodes are partitioned into groups by using location information, the multicast routing is done in label order for each group. The proposed algorithm does not require the maintenance of a distribution structure(e.g., a tree or a mesh) or a planar graph, which introduces extra cost. A forwarding node only uses information about positions of its destinations and its own neighbors to determine next hops and to detour obstacles or faulty nodes. The localized operations can take advantage of the power saving in wireless network. The proposed algorithm is thus very well suited for highly dynamic networks. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by means of simulation.

These special characteristics such as distributed, multi-hop, self-organizing, dynamic topology, time-variant channels, and limited resources etc make the traditional routing algorithms or protocols for wired networks and centered wireless networks canpsilat be used in mobile ad hoc networks directly. So the appropriative multicast routing algorithms or protocols for mobile ad hoc networks must be designed. In the paper, Combining merits between the mesh-based and the tree-based MANET multicast protocol, we proposed ADMRP (adaptive distributed multicast routing protocol), whose node can computes forward list dynamically and distributed. This mechanics can save the limited bandwidth, decrease the channel collision and reduce the total overhead of the MANET. At last, the ADMRP is validated by OPNET.

Multi-wavelength conversion is a feasible technique to realize optical signal replication. However, there are little work to study the wavelength assignment and network performance in the optical network employing multi-wavelength conversion. In this paper, we investigate the wavelength assignment algorithm in optical networks with multi-wavelength conversion. To improve the resource utilization, multi-wavelength converters are shared at each node in the network. The main object of the proposed wavelength assignment algorithm is to maximize the acceptable destinations and minimize the wavelength conversion at the same time. Simulations are conducted to compute the blocking probability. It can be found that 25% multi-wavelength converters are sufficient to guarantee almost the same performance with full configuration of converters at each node, even when the traffic load is extremely high.

In this paper we introduce the application of partitioning-based SOR (PSOR) algorithm to the minimum energy multicast tree problem in wireless ad hoc networks. PSOR was proposed for the minimum energy broadcast tree problem in our previous work and it can be applied to the multicast tree problem with small modification. PSOR for multicast maintains the same theoretical bound for the approximation ratio and computational running time as PSOR for broadcast. The computational results show improvement in the solution quality (in terms of the sum of the transmission powers). PSOR outperforms the other algorithms and it shows better results compared to ISOR (Iterated version of SOR) in terms of the ratio of solution quality improvement over running time increase. Recent careful study revealed that there was a bug in our implementation of SOR which caused worse performance than it should have. In this paper we used the results of the corrected version of SOR for the comparisons.

We study the problem of geographic multicast routing in a wireless sensor network. In particular, we are interested in geographic routing solutions with a very limited control overhead and overall bandwidth consumption. Existing geographic multicast routing protocols require nodes to periodically exchange beacon messages to gather information about the position of their neighbors. These beacons represent a waste of resources, specially in areas of the network with no active communications. Beacons also induce significant problems in real deployments such as interferences and collisions that cause inconsistencies in neighboring tables. In this paper we propose a new beacon-less geographic multicast routing protocol called BRUMA. Unlike previous solutions, BRUMA uses the propagation of data packets to opportunistically select next hops among those that are reachable from the sending node. This allows the protocol to overcome most of the issues of beacon-based solutions in real deployments. Our simulations show that BRUMA achieves a higher packet delivery ratio and a lower overall bandwidth consumption than GMR, which is the protocol performing best among existing geographic multicast solutions.

Retransmission based on packet acknowledgement (ACK/NAK) is a fundamental error control technique employed in IEEE 802.11-2007 unicast network. However the 802.11-2007 standard falls short of proposing a reliable MAC-level recovery protocol for multicast frames. In this paper we propose a latency and bandwidth efficient coding algorithm based on the principles of network coding for retransmitting lost packets in a single-hop wireless multicast network and demonstrate its effectiveness over previously proposed network coding based retransmission algorithms.

Scalability and efficiency are important for designing application-layer multicast protocol. In this paper, a short delay degree-constrained hierarchical protocol-SDDM is proposed for application-layer multicast. It adopts the idea of layer and cluster to construct multicast group members into a hierarchical architecture. When constructing the hierarchical architecture, the end host heterogeneity in bandwidth capacity is considered to achieve the high performance. During the cluster formation, it considers the underlying network properties to reduce packet delivering on costly links. In each cluster, a balanced Fibonacci multicast tree is constructed for cluster members with considering the size of cluster. Moreover, the packet processing delay is considered. The considering of underlying network properties and the construction of Fibonacci tree improve the delay performance of SDDM. The simulation shows that SDDM is an efficient and scalable application-layer multicast protocol.
