Layered multicast has been proposed as a solution to video multicast over Internet. Existing multicast protocols usually perform layer adaptation at the receiver's side, using static layer rate allocation techniques at the sender's side. In this paper, the basic theory of layered multicast was introduced firstly. The technology of dynamic sender-driven rate allocation was discussed. Especially, a clustering algorithm of layer rate allocation based on different receiver's bandwidth, SCRA, was brought forward. Subsequently, the implement of SCRA algorithm was presented. Finally, SCRA algorithm was simulated in specific network environment. The results of simulation were compared with other algorithms, such as GAU and SLM. The results show the multimedia multicast system adopting SCRA algorithm can gain high throughput with more simple algorithm framework.

Rendezvous point (RP) selection for multicast groups is the problem of selecting a node to serve as the RP-host for a multicast group. We consider rendezvous point selection in the context of channelization where groups have been established based on user preferences for a set of available flows. Thus, each of the flows associated with a group will arrive at the node that serves as the RP-host for that group, from which those flows will be multicast to the group subscribers. We study the simultaneous assignment of RP-hosts for a collection of multi-cast groups with the dual goals of a) not overloading any single node serving as a host; and, b) minimizing the total network traffic. Toward those ends we consider two versions of the problem. For bounded host assignment, we give a polynomial time algorithm for finding an optimal assignment. For host traffic constrained assignment, we establish that the problem is NP-complete and then study approximation algorithms. Simulation results are provided for the latter problem comparing the effectiveness of the solutions produced by our algorithms with optimal solutions.

This paper proposes a multicast scheduling mechanism to support the less packet loss for frequently used multicast services, so that it is possible to satisfy a number of users who are invoking for those services. A multicast switch on a multicast delivery path copies an input multicast packet to multiple output packets to send them to multiple destinations. When input multicast packets contend with other input multicast packets because of limited output ports, the multicast node selects some of the input multicast packets with the copy number of the multicast packets. By doing so, the proposed multicast scheduling mechanism supports more favorite multicast service with low packet loss. It means that frequently used multicast service is supported with better quality because the packet loss severely affects the quality of multimedia service.

In this paper, we study the problem of constructing minimum cost multicast trees and computing multiple multicast paths. Due to the lack of redundancy in multi-path and multicast structures, the multicast routing protocols are vulnerable to the failure in ad-hoc networks. So it is the dire need to come across the fault tolerant solution. This paper proposes edge disjoint spanning tree based multicasting in ad-hoc networks for route failure tolerance.

Recently, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have drawn significant attention from academia and industry as a fast, easy, and inexpensive solution for broadband wireless access. In WMNs, many important applications, such as mobile TV and video/audio conferencing, require the support of multicast. In this paper, we address the issue of multicast cooperative communications over WMN. Specifically, we identify the selection of relay nodes as a critical step to the success of cooperative multicast. To solve this problem, we develop the concept of in-group/out-group cooperation as well as a distributed relay selection algorithm for the mobile computing environment. Extensive simulation results show that our approach can efficiently mitigate the multicast transmission errors in wireless mesh networks.

In this paper, we design a destination-driven on-demand multicast routing protocol for wireless ad hoc networks. The design objective is to improve the multicast forwarding efficiency. To achieve this goal, the path to reach a multicast destination is biased towards those paths passing through another multicast destination. If multiple such choices are available, the one leading to the least extra cost is selected. Our protocol embeds this destination-driven feature into the on-demand multicast structure building process of an existing multicast protocol ODMRP. Detailed protocol design descriptions are provided. Simulation results show that our protocol can greatly improve the forwarding efficiency as compared with ODMRP. Moreover, our destination-driven design can also work well with other existing multicast routing protocols for wireless ad hoc networks.

In ad-hoc network, the packets may conflict with each other because there are no base stations or access points which fill the roles of administrators. Especially, nodes which received the multi target packets such as broadcasts or multicasts send the acknowledgement packets in the same time. On the other hand, there are a lot of times in the case of sending check packets to the receiving nodes one by one in order to avoid the conflict with acknowledgement packets. In this paper, we propose a novel multicast protocol for avoiding conflicts with acknowledgements, which consists of multicasts and polling nodes one by one. The conventional polling method sometimes needs long time in order to wait until time-out when one or more packets have lost. Our proposed method does not require a time-out in the first connection because its communication is multicast, then we can get all acknowledgement packets in a short time. We show the experimental results and get the good efficiency of our proposed method.

A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of autonomous nodes or terminals which communicate with each other by forming a multi-hop radio network and maintaining connectivity in a decentralized manner. Nodes in ad-hoc networks play both the roles of routers and terminals. Moreover, the routing path in ad-hoc networks is dynamic; it is not fixed as in wired networks. Therefore, some security mechanisms used in wired networks cannot simply be applied to protocols in ad-hoc networks. After analyzing various types of attacks against ad-hoc networks, a secure scheme for the famous routing protocol, MAODV (multicast Ad-hoc On-Demand distance Vector routing protocol) is proposed. To guarantee the integrity in ad-hoc networks, Secure Hash Algorithm-1 (SHA-1) is used. Furthermore, NS2 (Network Simulator) software is used to simulate this scheme and performance analysis are made.

Multi-channel multi-radio (MCMR) wireless mesh networking is an emerging technology that enables high-throughput networking capability using multiple channels and multiple radios per mesh router. Traditional multicast routing algorithms such as shortest path trees and minimum Steiner trees do not consider the wireless broadcast advantage or the underlying channel assignments (i.e., channel diversity) in a MCMR wireless mesh network (WMN). In this paper, we propose a multicast routing algorithm for MCMR WMNs that takes into account the wireless broadcast advantage and channel diversity in order to minimize the amount of network bandwidth consumed by the routing tree. The algorithm does so by minimizing the number of transmissions required to deliver one packet from the source to all the destinations of a multicast group. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm constructs routing trees having the least number of transmissions when compared with traditional trees such as shortest path trees, minimum Steiner trees, and minimum number of forwarders trees.

The multi-resolution multicast service is an emerging service for future generation communication systems, supporting different service qualities for receivers with different capabilities. Under such a scenario, the radio resource arrangement becomes very complex but is important in order to enhance the overall system throughput. For multi-resolution multicast OFDM systems, we proposed an adaptive scheme for radio resource allocation combined with the diversity mechanism. Moreover, considering the feasibility for real-time applications, the proposed scheme is simplified into a two-stage algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves significant performance improvement not only in terms of the total system throughput but also for the fairness issues.
