Wireless multicast can exploit broadcast nature of wireless communication. It is sufficient to transmit information only once to reach a group of users. But some users may fail to receive it due to channel fading etc. Thus, we have to find a proper threshold of scheduling and retransmit in order to reduce the packet loss. In this paper, the multicast scheduling problem with packet loss and delay constraints is studied. We investigate the relationship between delay and packet loss in multicast. And then, a scalable quality of service (QoS) multicast scheduling algorithm is given which achieves high system throughput with a scalable packet loss and delay. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate our theoretical claims.

A scalable QoS-aware multicast deployment in DiffServ networks has become an important area of research. Although multicasting and differentiated services are two complementary technologies, the integration of the two technologies is a non-trivial task due to architectural conflicts between them. A popular solution proposed is to extend the functionality of the DiffServ components to support multicasting. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to construct an efficient QoS-driven multicast tree, taking into account the available bandwidth per service class. We also present an efficient method to provide the limited available bandwidth for supporting heterogeneous users. The proposed mechanism is evaluated using simulated tests. The simulated results reveal that our algorithm can effectively minimize the bandwidth use and transmission cost.

Recent deployment of IP based multimedia distribution, especially broadcast TV distribution has increased the importance of simple and fast restoration during IP network failures for service providers. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a simple but efficient method for fast rerouting of IP multicast traffic during link failures in managed IPTV networks. More specifically, we devise an algorithm for tuning IP link weights so that the multicast routing path and the unicast routing path between any two routers are failure disjoint, allowing us to use unicast IP encapsulation for undelivered multicast packets during link failures. We demonstrate that, our method can be realized with minor modification to the current multicast routing protocol (PIM-SM). We run our prototype implementation in Emulab which shows our method yields to good performance.

Single frequency networks (SFN) in combination with a multi-carrier transmission scheme such as OFDM are often proposed as a means to provide continuous coverage of broadcast applications over a large area. In this paper, we propose a distributed beam-forming algorithm that makes use of channel state information fed back by receivers to improve the performance of the weaker connections. The distributed nature of the proposed algorithm makes it easier to implement when compared to its centralized counterparts. Simulation studies show that the proposed algorithm results in a significant improvement in the performance of SFNs supporting broadcast or multicast applications.

Linear precoding (LP) technique applied to OFDM systems has already proved its ability to significantly increase the system throughput in a powerline communication (PLC) context. In this paper, we propose resource allocation algorithms based on the LP technique to increase the multicast OFDM systems bit rate. The conventional multicast capacity is limited by the user which experiences the worst channel conditions. To increase the multicast bit rate, these proposed algorithms assign subcarriers and bits to different multicast users. Simulations are run over PLC channels and it is shown that the proposed solutions offer a bit rate gain up to 37% compared to the conventional multicast bit rate.

To minimize the number of wavelengths required by a multicast session in sparse light splitting wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks, a light-hierarchy structure, which occupies the same wavelength on all links, is proposed to span as many destinations as possible. Different from a light-tree, a light-hierarchy accepts cycles, which are used to traverse crosswise a 4-degree (or above) multicast incapable (MI) node twice (or above) and switch two light signals on the same wavelengths to two destinations in the same multicast session. In this paper, firstly, a graph renewal and distance priority light-tree algorithm (GRDP-LT) is introduced to improve the quality of light-trees built for a multicast request. Then, it is extended to compute light-hierarchies. Obtained numerical results demonstrate the GRDP-LT light-trees can achieve a much lower links stress, better wavelength channel cost, and smaller average end-to-end delay as well as diameter than the currently most efficient algorithm. Furthermore, compared to light-trees, the performance in terms of link stress and network throughput is greatly improved again by employing the light-hierarchy, while consuming the same amount of wavelength channel cost.

Key assignment algorithm plays a very important role in the large and dynamic groups for group key management. This paper investigates detailed and deeply key assignment algorithms and analyses breadth first assignment (BFA) and depth first assignment (DFA). Combining the advantage and disadvantage of these two kinds of algorithms, we present a new mixed key assignment algorithm (MKA). Our results show that this approach is much better than previous key assignment algorithms for reducing the average number of packets that a user needs to receive and the variance of it.

To resolve the channel resources waste problem of current multicast routing algorithm in low earth orbit (LEO) satellite IP networks, a core-cluster-based source-specific multicast (CSSM) algorithm and its weighted version (i.e. wCSSM algorithm) are presented. The CSSM algorithm takes source node as initial core-cluster, and expands it step by step to construct entire multicast tree with the lowest tree cost by a shortest path scheme between newly-generated core-cluster and surplus group members, which can greatly improve transport bandwidth utilization and transport efficiency. Moreover, the wCSSM algorithm can make tradeoff between end-to-end propagation delay and tree cost by adaptively adjusting the weighted factor to meet strict end-to-end delay requirements of some real-time multicast applications at the expense of a slight increase in tree cost. Finally, performance comparison of the proposed algorithms with the typical SSM algorithm (i.e. MRA) in LEO satellite networks is provided. Simulation results show that their tree cost performance is greatly better than that of MRA at the expense of a bit higher end-to-end propagation delay.

We propose new strategies in core selection methods and core-based tree (CBT) construction based on new methods of computing delay variation. As a result, we propose an algorithm, which guarantees that the delay from the source to any destination does not exceed a real-time constraint. Furthermore, we address the problem of satisfying the delay variation constraint under cost minimization. We present a new core and path selection methods that take both cost and delay simultaneously into consideration. Thus, we achieve a balance of optimizing cost and delay of the multicast tree. The problem is known to be as NP-complete. A solution to this problem is required to provide decent real-time communication services such as on-line gaming, shopping, and teleconferencing.

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is temporarily constructed network with no fixed infrastructure. ODMRP (On-Demand multicast Routing Protocol) is a popular multicast protocol for wireless ad hoc networks. The strengths of ODMRP are simplicity, high packet delivery ratio, and non-dependency on specific unicast protocols. Owing to performing scoped flooding of packets ODMRP suffers from excessive control overhead and redundant data transmissions when the number of multicast source increases, which simultaneously leads to increasing network load and waste of the limited resources of the nodes. In order to cope with the problems, we propose an improved ad hoc multicast routing protocol based on ODMRP referred to as IODMRP. In IODMRP, it is not all the nodes but partial nodes in forwarding group that relay packets, the partial ones are dynamic and chosen based on the forwarder's density and power state. Through a course of simulation experiments, the performance of IODMRP is compared to ODMRP, The simulation results show that IODMRP reduces the redundant data transmissions, enhances the transmission efficiency and extend the network lifetime, the performance of the network is improved.
