There was a lot of interest in multicast communications within this decade as it is an essential part of many network applications, e.g. video-on-demand, etc. In this paper, we model flow rate allocation for application overlay as a utility based optimization problem constrained by capacity limitations of physical links and overlay constraints. The optimization flow control presented here addresses not only concave utility functions which are suitable for applications with elastic traffics, but also especial forms of non-concave utilities that are used to model applications with inelastic traffics, which might demand for hard delay and rate requirements. We then propose an iterative algorithm as the solution to the optimization flow control problem and investigate especial forms of non-concave utilities that are supported by this model. Simulation results show that the iterative algorithm can be used to deal with sigmoidal-like utilities which are useful for modeling real-time applications such as live streaming.

multicast communications have become more and more important recently, especially in their applications in multimedia communication, quality of service (QoS), video conferencing, and distance education. In a point-to-point (PTP) optical communication system, how to provide multicast services is an essential issue. There are some advantages of active splitter/active combiner (AS/AC) networks, such as strictly nonblocking, simpler routing algorithm, lower system-insertion-loss, zero differential loss, and better signal-to-noise characteristics. The active multimode interference (MMI) coupler can provide splitting/combining operations with low loss and good balancing. It has been demonstrated that the AS/AC network constructed by active MMI switching devices can implement the multicast and PTP communications simultaneously. In this study, we offer two multicast algorithms, parallel multicast, and tunable multicast, on AS/AC network. The parallel multicast algorithm is suitable when there are multi requests arriving at the same time. The tunable multicast algorithm is suitable for balancing the output signals' power.

Several parallel applications in MPSoCs take advantage of multicast communication. Path-based multicast scheme has been proven to be more efficient than the others multicast schemes in on-chip interconnection network. We present a new adaptive path based model for both the multicast and unicast wormhole routing protocols. The proposed model under mixed traffic models has lower latency than the previous path-based methods with negligible hardware overhead.

In this paper we have proposed HRSQM, heterogeneous receivers supporting QoS multicast, which is a distributed protocol that creates multicast tree for receivers with heterogeneous QoS requirements. It relies only on local states and does not use any global state. Furthermore, through exhaustive search and carefully selecting branch to connect the new node to the tree, the efficiency of tree is always near optimal. Also it reshapes the multicast tree to improve resource utilization. Thanks to the current high-speed networks, HRSQM combines resource reservation with routing. By comparing it with other related protocols through simulations, we find that it has higher success ratio, also the resulting multicast trees of HRSQM require much fewer links than other methods.

Wireless mesh networks (WMN) have emerged as an economical means for delivering last-mile Internet access. multicast is a fundamental service in WMNs because it efficiently distributes data among a group of nodes. multicast algorithms in WMNs are designed to maximize system throughput and minimize delay. Previous work has unrealistically assumed that the underlying WMN is link-homogeneous. We consider one important form of link heterogeneity: different link loss ratios, or equivalently different ETX. We model different link loss ratios by defining a new graph theory problem, HW-SCDS, on an edge-weighted directed graph, where the edge weights model ETX, the reciprocal of link loss ratios. We minimize transmissions in a multicast by computing a minimum HW-SCDS in the edge-weighted graph. We prove HW-SCDS is NP-hard and devise a greedy algorithm for it. Simulations show that our algorithm significantly outperforms the current best WMN multicast algorithm by both increasing throughput and reducing delay.

The fulfilment of guaranteed multiple criteria based quality of service (QoS) for multimedia applications servicing multiple subscribers is known to be a NP complete problem. Moreover, finding the multicast graph respecting the defined QoS requirements and minimizing network resources is also a NP-complete optimization task. The well-known greedy algorithm Mamcra, proposed in the literature, computes the set of shortest paths from a source to all destination, and then reduces this set to an efficient set of multicast routes, without compromising the requested level of QoS. A closer look at Mamcra shows that it does not exploit further simple but possible reductions of the multicast sub-graph. In this paper, we propose a taboo search algorithm, named TabooQMR, that is augmented by some meta-heuristics to improve the multicast sub-graph computed by the greedy algorithm Mamcra, and leading to a considerable improvement, as demonstrated by the simulation results.

The overlay multicast network (OMN) is emerging as a fundamental technique to solve the problems caused by IP multicast network when large scales of video stream are transmitted. In this paper, a matrix-coded immune algorithm is proposed to select multicast service nodes with the purpose of building a layered multicast tree of OMN for the reliable video transmission. The matrix-coded mechanism and immune algorithm with different crossover operators are analyzed. Finally, Results of theoretical analysis and simulation verify the validity and feasibility of proposed immune algorithm for selecting multicast service nodes of OMN.

In LEO satellite networks, the traditional multicast routing algorithm exist the problem of high computational complexity. In this paper, a fast iterative distributed multicast routing algorithm was developed based on the inherent characteristics of satellite networks which using distributed computing model and significantly reducing the algorithm computational complexity. Simulations show that fast algorithm has low computational complexity, a better average delay performance and overhead compared with the MRA.

Network survivability is crucial to optical multicast traffic. We present the optimized design of node-and-link protecting p-cycle with restorability constraints for optical multicast traffic protection. Results show that 100% node and link failure recovery can be achieved at a small amount of additional capacity, compared with the case of 100% link failure recovery.

After decades of wired communication, the wireless communication has replaced them in the recent past. Due to the large bandwidth of wireless communication, it is used for multimedia applications. The wireless multimedia network has gained tremendous importance in recent years due to its wide applications. It is unreliable because of network parameter constraints such as bandwidth, buffer, delay, jitter, routing etc. These constraints can be made more flexible, efficient, robust by adopting new technologies into wireless multimedia networks. The new technologies should address important issues like multicast routing, resource allocation, synchronization, etc. The multicast routing algorithms in wireless multimedia networks does not depend only on the distance but also requires stringent QoS parameters like link delay, jitter, link reliability, resource availability, etc. In this paper we have developed a novel algorithm for multicast routing that considers two QoS parameters viz., link delay and jitter for packet routing. The simulation results reveal that the packet delivery ratio and iteration time are improved.
