Multiple description coding (MDC) has been proposed as a source coding technique that is robust to channel errors for video transmission. MDC generates multiple independent bit-streams, where the multiple bit-streams are referred to as multiple descriptions (MD). Furthermore, it enables a useful reproduction of the signal when any description is received correctly. This paper proposes a new multicast heuristic algorithm, that attempts to take the benefit of MDC properties and multiple paths, to improve the user's satisfaction for a group of heterogeneous destinations in wireless ad hoc network. Extensive simulations clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the user's satisfaction irrespective of the number of destinations in the multicast group.

Intra-layered multicast uses fixed sending rate interval for each layer, and a delegate of the receivers is selected in the layer for adjusting the layerpsilas sending rate. Sender adjusts layerpsilas sending rate within the layer rate interval according to the delegatepsilas rate. A scheme based on competition probability formula for delegate selection is proposed in this paper. Two factors determine whether the current feedback receiver can be selected as the delegate. One is the related difference between feedback rate and current layerpsilas sending rate, the other is the approximately rate distribution of receivers in the layer. The scheme can reduce layerpsilas sending rate drop when receivers with high available bandwidth are dominant in the layer. Simulation results show that the scheme can meet most of receiverspsila demand within a layer, and is TCP friendly.

multicast is the ability of a communication network to accept a single message from an application and to deliver copies of the message to multiple recipients at different location. With the development of Internet, multicast is widely applied in all kinds of multimedia real-time application: distributed multimedia systems, collaborative computing, video-conferencing, distance education, etc. In order to construct a delay-constrained multicast routing tree, average distance heuristic (ADH) algorithm is analyzed firstly, then by using which a delay-constrained algorithm called DCADH is presented. By using ADH a least-cost multicast tree can be constructed; if the path delay can't meet the delay upper bound, a shortest delay path which is computed by Dijkstra's algorithm will be merged into the existing multicast tree to meet the delay upper bound. Simulation experiments show that DCADH has a good performance in achieving a low-cost multicast tree.

The increasing use of multiparty Web conferencing applications demands for suitable multicast protocols. Limited bandwidth of typical Internet user requires the underlying multicast routing to be efficient. In this paper we present HOMA; an application layer multicast protocol which has been tailored for small scale multiparty videoconferencing applications. Considering the requirements of such applications, HOMA uses a heuristic routing to construct efficient multicast trees on the application layer. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed routing algorithm through simulations. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm performs better than the related algorithms in terms of rejection rate, while satisfying QoS constraints of conferencing applications such as end-to-end delay and bandwidth.

The study of the multicast routing protocol of multi-constrained is important for the development of the high performance network. The aims are the multi-constrained network model and the definition of the formula of every constrained characteristic measurement. However, it is a NP-complete problem. In order to gain the approximative solution, many heuristic algorithms have been designed by filling all kind of constraints. A few kind of classical routing algorithms at the optimization aspect have been analyzed and compared. The question has been pointed out in the protocol study.

ECN-capable TCP-friendly layered multicast multimedia delivery combines explicit congestion notification (ECN) with the TCP-friendly layered multicast scheme. TCP-Friendliness denotes that receiver-driven architecture behaves under congestion like the TCP protocol. Unlike well-known TCP-friendly protocols (TFRC, TFMCC, WEBRC), which use TCP throughput the equation, our system assures TCP-friendliness by emulation. The receiver emulates TCP congestion control mechanism working with ECN congestion notification. Decisions about changing group membership and, as a result, about changing effective transmission rate, are taken based on TCP emulation. In the paper, a simulation model of ECN-capable multicast multimedia delivery in ns-2 environment is discussed.

multicast routing with quality-of-service constraints is one of the most important problems in computer networks as constrained Steiner tree problem. It is a well-known NP-complete problem, which has various real-time multimedia applications in high-speed networks. In this paper, we propose algorithms to solve the bandwidth-delay-constrained least-cost multicast routing problem based on Tabu Search. The main feature of proposed TS-based algorithms is use of an effective candidate list strategy. By the use of this strategy not only search speed but also solution quality will be improved. We evaluate the performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithms on a variety of random generated networks. Evaluation results indicate that the proposed algorithms overcome the other existing short-term memory version of TS-based algorithms and heuristics.

Overlay multicast has been proposed for implementing multicast routing in the application layer as a practical alternative to IP multicast. A technical challenge for overlay multicast is that the dynamic multicast members can make data delivery unreliable. In this paper, we focus this issue in the context of live media streaming by exploring how to construct a stable multicast tree that minimizes the negative effect of frequent member departures on an overlay tree. For the problem, we study two layout for the tree nodes, namely, the bandwidth-ordered tree and the time-ordered tree. We propose a distributed switching tree algorithm that minimizes the failure effect among tree nodes and conduct a stochastic analysis on their properties regarding reliability and tree depth.

Given the highly dynamic nature of wireless ad hoc network, routing is one of the most challenging tasks. Among the routing protocols that are in the process of normalisation is AODV (Ad hoc on demand Distance Vector). AODV is a reactive source based on routing protocol whose performance is very sensitive to several fixed parameters, such as. ACTIVE_ROUTE_TIMEOUT, HELLO_INTERVAL, MY_ROUTE_TIMEOUT, NET_DIAMETER, RREQ_RETRIES, .... In this paper we propose an adaptive version of AODV (A 2 ODV) where the protocol regularly adapts its routing decision to the state of the behaviour and the state of the network. In A 2 ODV each node maintains an estimation of the reliability as well as an expected residual uptime of its interfaces. A route is characterized by two metrics: (1) reliability defined as the product of its constituent links; and (2) Route residual lifetime estimated by the residual lifetime of its weakest link. Route selection is a function of these two metrics. Simulation shows that A 2 ODV clearly outperforms AODV with respect to packet delivery ratio and overhead traffic.

Layer-encoded multimedia multicasting (LMM) has emerged in recent years to support heterogeneous subscriber stations with diverse computing and networking capabilities. With the advance of broadband wireless access technologies, wireless relay networks (WRNs) are expected to provide significant improvement on throughput and extension of coverage for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we study a radio resource allocation problem with the consideration of wireless interferences for LMM over WRNs. The problem is formally formulated, and the objective of the problem is to maximize the system utility where the utility is defined as user satisfaction. The NP-hardness of the problem is demonstrated, and then a heuristic algorithm is proposed. A series of experiments are conducted to demonstrate the capability of our proposed algorithm.
