As an easy way to implement the multicast in wide area network, ALM (Application Layer multicast) will be widely used in the future. But the large delay and the instability lead to many issues as reliability, scalability and ordered performance, which confined its extensive application. This paper presents a totally ordered algorithm in multi-source interactive ALM, which warrants that the operations are executed by the destination at the same order without the center server or NTP (Network Time Protocol) support.

In this paper, we study the topic of distributed and optimal congestion control for scalable video streams in application-layer multicast (ALM). We propose a TCP-friendly, fully distributed synchronous algorithm based on the utility-price model which maximizes the global utilities for the streams in the application-layer multicast tree. With the help of numerical study, we show that our proposed algorithm optimizes the overall video quality for fine-grained scalable streams, while minimizing the messaging overhead in the application-layer multicast channel.

In WDM networks, it is important to maintain the survivability of communication sessions when link failure occurs due to the high bandwidth provided by a fiber link. Especially, link failures have more serious impact on multicast sessions than on unicast ones, making it more critical to protect multicast sessions. For this sake, researchers have proposed tree-based, path-based, and segment-based protection schemes, which however require long restoration time. In this paper, we propose a new solution based on p-cycles to address the problem. Specifically, we identify and address the challenges in applying p-cycles for multicast protection, and develop an intelligent p-cycle (IpC) scheme that forms p-cycles on-demand to protect dynamic multicast requests. Extensive simulations have been conducted to evaluate our IpC scheme, and the results show that it outperforms existing solutions.

A key challenge in a network-centric tactical environment is disseminating information related to sensors, situational awareness, and command and control to the appropriate receivers in a timely, reliable and efficient fashion. IP multicast is the transport mechanism used for information dissemination. It is typically the case in tactical networks that the number of IP multicast addresses available for use is limited and it becomes necessary to assign multiple information topics to each multicast address. This necessitates use of an efficient assignment algorithm during network planning to minimize the dissemination of unwanted information in order to decrease the unnecessary use of network resources and reduce the information load on the receiving nodes. This paper describes an efficient algorithm for assigning information topics to multicast groups taking into consideration the overlapping information needs of subscriber nodes and network bandwidth that will be consumed in the dissemination of each topic based on its size and frequency of publication. The assignment algorithm supports unique requirements of tactical networks: for an information topic, the subscribers may not be related by echelon hierarchy and the criticality of information may vary with subscribers. The assignment algorithm uses the simulated annealing technique to compute an optimal address assignment.

It has been shown that network coding can lead to significant improvement in network capacity and reduction in power consumption for multicast traffic in wireless networks. In this paper, we study the problem of supporting multicast in wireless sensor networks. The objective is to jointly maximize the network lifetime and minimize the number of packets undergoing network coding. We formulate the problem of establishing coding subgraph in the network as a linear programming problem, which is suitable for distributed implementation. We propose a new set of information flow variables, which enables us to determine the rate of performing network coding. Simulation results show that the network lifetime achieved by our proposed scheme is 20% higher than the maximum lifetime Steiner tree algorithm.

This paper investigates the construction of a multicast tree satisfying Quality of Service (QoS) real-time group communication in a heterogeneous network comprising multiple Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs) attached to the backbone Internet. The main objective of our work is to optimize the Delay- and delay Variation Bounded multicast Tree (DVBMT) problem, which has been proved to be NP-complete. This problem has to satisfy the minimum delay variation and the end-to-end delay within an upper bound. The well-known algorithms solved this problem are the DVMA, the DDVCA, the Cheng's algorithm, and so on. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that outperforms other algorithms in terms of the multicast delay variation in the realistic network environment. The enhancement increases to approximately 3.7%~ 32.9% in terms of that. The time complexity of the proposed algorithm is O(mn 2 ), which is comparable to that of DDVCA.

The CICQ switches have inherent advantages in supporting multicast traffic, and scheduling policies can be simplified to a great extent when distributed scheduling is applied. However, simulation results indicate that the increment of multicast will block unicast, and finally reduce the performance of the entire switch. To overcome this deficiency, the paper proposes a new switch called MCICQ (multicast supporting CICQ) which supports the uni- and multicast hybrid scheduling, and scheduling policies MFDR and MFS which support the parallel distributed uni- and multicast are also proposed. With the fanout splitting mechanism, both MFDR and MFS can achieve good performance without speedup, and their complexities are only O(1). MFS scheduling policy can also provide different bandwidth guarantees for uni- and multicast traffic. Simulation results under SPES show that both MFDR and MFS can achieve good performance.

As we know, the member-only algorithm in provides the best links stress and wavelength usage for the construction of multicast light-trees in WDM networks with sparse splitting. However, the diameter of tree is too big and the average delay is also too large, which are intolerant for QoS required multimedia applications. In this paper, a distance priority based algorithm is proposed to build light-trees for multicast routing, where the Candidate Destinations and the Candidate Connectors are introduced. Simulations show the proposed algorithm is able to greatly reduce the diameter and average delay of the multicast tree (up to 51% and 50% respectively), while keep the same or get a slightly better link stress as well as the wavelength usage than the famous Member-Only algorithm.

The design of optimal opportunistic multicast scheduling (OMS) that maximizes the throughput of cellular networks is investigated. In a cellular network, the base station (BS) transmits the same information to multiple users within a cell. Recently, Gopala et al. proposed a median-user static OMS scheme in which a BS selects and broadcasts to the best 50% users in each transmission until all users are served. This scheduling scheme has been shown to exploit both the multiuser diversity and the multicasting gain simultaneously. In this work, we examine the optimal user selection ratio in each transmission. Based on extreme value theory, we first derive the limiting distribution of the maximum decodable rate of the M-th best user and the corresponding average number of transmissions required to serve all users. Then, the optimal selection ratio is established by maximizing the average network throughput. Furthermore, a dynamic selection algorithm is proposed to adjust the user selection ratio adaptively in each transmission. It is shown by simulation results that the OMS scheme with optimized static and dynamic selected ratios outperform the conventional unicast, multicast and the median-user static OMS schemes.

An important service in distributed systems, as multi-processors, is the ability to transmit multicast messages. Cache coherence protocols and parallel algorithms are examples of applications requiring multicast messages. To transmit a multicast message to n targets, in networks-on-chip without multicast service, the source router must transmit n identical messages. Few works in the literature describe multicasting in NoCs. The goal of this work is to implement a deadlock free routing algorithm for wormhole-switched mesh NoCs, enabling to transmit simultaneous multicast messages. The dual-path multicast algorithm, used in multicomputers, is adapted to NoCs in this work. The dual-path multicast algorithm is implemented for circuit and packet switching. The evaluation comprises: (i) comparison between the algorithms; (ii) NoC performance as a function of the percentage of injected multicast messages; (iii) performance gains obtained with the dual-path algorithm when compared to the transmission of single unicast messages.
