The need for survivability in optical networks is becoming more and more important because of the huge amount of aggregated traffic that is carried in an optical network. A number of protection schemes have been proposed for mesh networks, where their main objective is to provide a network that can restore a failure quickly and efficiently via a simple automated system. In this paper, we review and compare the protection schemes suitable for multicast traffic in optical networks with mesh topology. The schemes are compared with respect to mesh topology and blocking probability.

This paper evaluates and analyzes the traffic performance of our recently proposed multicast-enabled optical packet switch under a hybrid traffic model. A prioritized packet scheduling algorithm is proposed for the output contention resolution of the switch. The simulation results show that the multicast packet loss probability can be greatly improved by slightly increasing the number of multicast modules in conjunction with the proposed packet scheduling. For a given effective traffic load, the improvement on the total packet loss probability by increasing the number of multicast modules is related to the multicast traffic proportion. It is also shown that the average packet delay for the switch is little affected by increasing the number of multicast modules since the multicast packets are given higher priority than the unicast packets.

We analyze crosstalk-free widesense nonblocking multicast multi-log networks. Widesense nonblocking strikes a balance between strictly nonblocking and rearrangeably non- blocking both in terms of cost-effectiveness and route establishment efficiency. The problem is important as cost-effective and efficient crosstalk-free multicast photonic switching networks are likely to play an important role at the optical Internet core in the future. Particularly, for the first time in the literature we derive conditions for the d-ary multi-log network to be crosstalk-free multicast widesense nonblocking under the window algorithm for any given window size. Several interesting by-products follow from our approach and result. Firstly, our result allows for computing the best window size minimizing the fabric cost, showing that the multi-log network is a very good candidate for crosstalk-free multicast switching architectures. Secondly, our analytical approach - partly based on applying the celebrated Konig-Egevary theorem - also gives a much simpler proof of the known case when the network is not required to be crosstalk-free. Thirdly, for window sizes of 1 and d n , we re-discovered known results for the multi-log multicast networks under the so-called fanout constraints.

In this paper, we propose a new multicast subgraph construction algorithm and a distributed source coding-based multicast (DSCM) protocol for multihop wireless networks. The DSCM emphasize reliability, rate optimality, and energy efficiency. Both algorithms are based on local knowledge of the network. DSCM uses rateless error correcting codes to provide reliability and rate optimality, and distributed source coding to ensure the energy efficiency. We compared our scheme to energy-efficient methods such as network coding (NC) and multicast incremental power (MIP). Simulation results show DSCM performs close to these algorithms. However unlike the proposed algorithm, NC and MIP assume full knowledge of the network topology and have much higher decoding complexity than DSCM.

Based on QoS constraints such as delay, delay jitter, bandwidth and packet loss metrics this paper describes a network model suitable for investigating the routing problem and presents a multicast routing algorithm with multiple QoS constraints based on GA and TS hybrid strategy. This algorithm takes advantage of GA and TS and overcomes the shortcomings of GA used in solving the multicast routing problem with multiple QoS constraints-poor climbing ability and immature convergence. Simulation results show that the algorithm is an effective approach to the problem of multicast routing decision with multiple QoS constraints.

In the routing and cost sharing of multicast towards a group of potential receivers, cross-monotonicity is a property that states a user's payment can only be smaller when serviced in a larger set. Being cross-monotonic has been shown to be the key in achieving group-strategyproofness. We study multicast schemes that target optimal flow routing, cross-monotonic cost sharing, and budget balance. We show that no multicast scheme can satisfy these three properties simultaneously, and resort to approximate budget balance instead. We derive both positive and negative results that complement each other for directed and undirected networks. We show that in directed networks, no cross-monotonic scheme can recover a constant fraction of optimal multicast cost. We provide a simple scheme that does achieve 1/k-budget-balance, where k is the number of receivers. Using a probabilistic method rooted in random graph theory, we prove an upper-bound of 2/radic(k) for the budget balance ratio. For undirected networks, we derive a constant upper-bound of 1/2 instead. We further apply a smooth dual growing technique to design a cross- monotonic scheme that recovers k+1/2kzeta of optimal multicast cost in undirected networks, where zeta is a network-dependent parameter close to 1. This is almost tight against the upper-bound |. We finally present a two-stage linear optimization model that pursues maximum budget balance in any given specific network, with trade-off in complexity. Optimization results in various network configurations confirm the theoretically established bounds.

In Video-on-Demand (VoD) systems,a number of sophisticated architectures have been proposed to provide instantaneous services through the use of unicast and multicast *** of the architectures adopt a delivery scheme independent of the popularity of the requested video and the current system load,which fails to achieve a better bandwidth utilization *** paper presents a unified bandwidth allocation architecture combining both unicast and ***,a bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed to control the way the bandwidth channel is allocated based on the popularity of the requested video and the current request arrival *** simulation results show that the proposed architecture and algorithm improve the system throughput at peak time without much influence on most channels'interactive ability and increase interactive clients at off-peak time.

Most of flooding algorithm of recent Ad Hoc multicast routing protocols are suitable under specific networks conditions. If the condition changes like increasing the number of multicast source nodes and networks nodes or having higher node speed and more traffic loads, they will not work well. To provide multicast routing support for a wide range of operational condition, we propose a new protocol (CBSRP) that integrates the effectiveness of a flooding scheme and the efficiency of a mesh scheme. The protocol constructs a new metric of node stability and selects a stable path with the help of entropy metric to reduce the number of route reconstruction. It selects the nodes which have the most weight and stability to be the cluster headers. In order to decrease control overhead, cluster headers are the only sets of nodes which can rebroadcast the broadcasting message from the multicast source nodes. It also adopts reserve gateway mechanism to eliminate the setup latency of new gateway. Even in high speed and high networks traffic loads conditions the protocol performs well.

As multicast applications become popular, provisioning survivable multicast connections in WDM networks is an important issue. In this paper, we study the problem of multicast protection in sparse-splitting WDM networks, and propose an efficient protection algorithm called sparse-splitting constrained multicast protection (SSMP) algorithm. Differing from previous works, the backup paths derived by SSMP can share wavelengths with primary tree in sparse-splitting WDM networks. To achieve wavelength sharing between primary tree and backup paths, a layered graph model is developed. Simulation results show that SSMP can achieve better performance in terms of average network cost and blocking probability than existing algorithms.

Providing QoS support is crucial to guarantee effective transportation of multimedia service for ad hoc network. In this paper, a QoS multicast routing algorithm with bandwidth and delay constraints was proposed. It utilizes genetic algorithm to search optimized multicast tree which satisfies the QoS requirement. The simulation results show that the algorithm has fast convergence and high routing discovery rate. It will provide an available approach for multicast communication with QoS guarantee in mobile networks.
