Wireless sensor networks present a great potential in monitoring systems. A vast scope of applications can take advantage of WSNs and, mainly because of their own nature, the aggregation of WSN nodes into groups provides more potential solutions when compared with traditional monitoring systems. This paper introduces the issue of multicast messages and their impact on battery resources of WSNs. It presents a study based on a real implementation to evaluate the energy consumed by each node when a multicast or unicast is used. A study of the multicast impact in the neighbourhood is also presented in this paper.

Group key management has been one of important problems all the time for secure multicast. Key assignment algorithm plays a very important role in the large and dynamic groups for group key management. This paper investigates detailed and deeply key assignment algorithms and analyses Breadth First Assignment (BFA) and Depth First Assignment(DFA). Combining the advantage and disadvantage of these two kinds of algorithms,. we present a new mixed key assignment algorithm(MKA). Our results show that this approach is much better than previous key assignment algorithms for reducing the average number of packets that a user needs to receive and the variance of it. For stage of rekey retransmission, we use a method that assigns the keys of different members into one packet. The approach can be very effective in reducing the bandwidth requirements of the reliable key delivery.

The alphabet size of a network code is a crucial parameter for the existence of a code in a network topology. In this paper we present a method to compute the alphabet size of a linear network code for an one-source acyclic directed graph using only the outgoing edges from the source. In addition we show a method to reduce the alphabet size for a class of combination networks.

In this paper, we propose an optimal SVC bitstream extraction scheme that can produce scalable layer representations for different viewing devices scattered over a multicasting network with diverse link bandwidth. Our scheme can determine optimal extraction orders/paths that are implementable at different multicasting nodes by performing successive steps of multiple adaptation. In addition to this basic scheme, we also develop an unambiguous denotation for the optimal extraction paths, and an algorithm for deducing the optimal extraction paths for less capable devices through path truncation. Extensive SVC encoding and adaptation experiments have been performed using JSVM 9 and both objective quality metrics (PSNR and MSE) as well as subjective metric (VQM). The experiment results showed that our scheme works well if convexity of R-D performance is maintained throughout the SVC bitstream.

In this paper, we propose skip Delaunay network (SDN), which is a scalable geographic network that connects computational entities or nodes in a 2D space by constant P2P hop counts. SDN has a hybrid structure of hierarchical logical networks and Delaunay networks, both of which are generated by P2P communications among nodes. It enables, GeoUnicast to specified points, Geo multicast to regions, as well as range queries with log(N) hop counts. We propose an autonomous generation algorithm of SDN and evaluate network parameters and geocast parameters of SDN by numerical simulations.

In a Pub/Sub system, if the clients are permitted to move randomly, their mobility will cause their access brokers to be changed, which has brought in problems in dissemination of subscriptions and distribution of matching results. We claim that channelization-based routing algorithms can be applied to the Pub/Sub systems which support wireless clients. In this paper, we discuss the related issues of subscription and event distribution in a channelization-based Pub/Sub system. We also propose an optimization algorithm based on client trajectory prediction, which is proved to be a good solution for the problems brought by mobile clients and also can improve quality of service for mobile subscribers.

We consider the problem of finding the minimum number of transmissions in an ad-hoc network for all-to-all broadcasting using network coding. This work generalizes previous results for canonical topologies such as the circle and the wrap around grid to the finite-sized line, and non-wrap-around grid. The latter topologies better reflect network coding in random topologies, since the dissemination of information is "directional", in a sense that information usually arrives via the neighbors on the path to its originator instead of from all possible directions. We find that while the line topology requires a higher number of transmissions compared to the circle, this is interestingly not the case for the grid. We further present simulation results on a heuristic that estimates the required minimum number of transmissions in random wireless topologies and compare it to the optimum solution, as well as previously proposed heuristics.

Chord is known to be limited in routing efficiency since all nodes are on the overlay without considering the underlying network topology. In this paper, a Chord routing algorithm based on limited network layer multicast, called MChord, is proposed, which uses multicast technology to obtain physical neighbor information for routing. Simulation shows that it can shorten network search delay greatly, reduce routing hops effectively and improve the routing performance.

Focus of the present paper is the integration between high altitude platforms (HAPs) and terrestrial UMTS system to support multimedia broadcast/multicast services. HAPs are characterised by a wide coverage area, which makes them a very attractive solution to support broadcast and multicast applications, while increasing both resource capacity and grade of services. In the depicted scenario, we propose to enhance the system efficiency by envisaging a novel radio resource management (RRM) protocol based on the evaluation of the power consumption relevant to users belonging to each multicast group. We demonstrate that the use of the proposed RRM policy, coupled to a wise selection of transport channels, leads to the effective management of multiple multicast groups.

Multimedia broadcast and multicast service (MBMS) specification was introduced in the release 6 of the 3GPP standard to deliver multimedia content to a large group of users in the UMTS network. With the MBMS system generally the same content is transmitted to multiple users in a unidirectional fashion, typically by multiple base stations to improve the coverage over a large geographical area. From the radio network point of view the standard supports the point-to-point (p-t-p) and the point-to-multipoint (p-t-m) transmission modes. In this paper we propose a group based p-t-m MBMS algorithm utilising the scalable video coding techniques to improve overall QoS of multimedia services. The group based MBMS algorithm has been proposed to support moderate to high date rate multicasting services over the HSDPA link. The proposed algorithm has been simulated using an OPNET simulation model. Initial results show that the proposed algorithm could offer higher data and improved QoS for MBMS users.
