Broadcast is among the most primitive collective communication operations of any interconnection network. Broadcast algorithms for the mesh topology have been widely reported in the literature. However, most existing algorithms have been studied in one-port and within limited conditions, such as light traffic loads. In contrast, this study simulates the broadcast operations, taking into account a wide range of traffic loads. Also, the performance evaluation of meshes in the presence of unicast and broadcast traffic is presented in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to consider the issue of broadcast latency at both the network and node levels. A new model for broadcast in all-port wormhole-routed meshes is proposed. The model is based on the Extended Dominating Nodes algorithm (EDN). Results are shown from a simulation study confirming that the new 2way-EDN broadcast algorithm exhibits superior performance over some existing algorithms.

The grid would see the countless mobile devices becoming the most important users. However, the bottleneck is still at the last mile from the backbone to these mobile terminals where wireless environment places limitations on the rate and amount of communication. Currently, point-to-multipoint (PTM) communication is an effective solution to this limitation. This paper developed a new PTM mechanism to support efficient access to the multicasting information on the mobile grid. Furthermore, we studied the parallel channels content organization and concurrent content retrieval with or without indexing and caching. The presented algorithms with higher performance could deliver information to more users so as to achieve shorter response time and less network latency, both for the content organization side and for the content retrieval side. The performance was validated in many experiments.

Scalable video representation of the state-of-art scalable extension of the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (SVC) and its combined 3d scalability feature offer an excellent solution to flexible video multicast over IP network. In order to relieve the impact of the severe bandwidth fluctuations and packet loss to the reconstructed quality in heterogeneous networks like the internet, a GOP-adaptive layer-based priority ordering algorithm for SVC is proposed in this paper. The method ordered the SVC bit stream according to the rate distortion contribution of different layer to the whole performance within a GOP, which makes the transmission more efficient and robust under the same bandwidth condition. Simulation results of different sequences are given to demonstrate that the proposed algorithms offer better performance in video quality as compared the default SVC ordering method and the SNR-based ordering method.

We propose an efficient video adaptive streaming (VAST) Algorithm which can be used in FTTx broadband access networks. To serve video-on-demand (VoD) users, the algorithm uses a patching scheme to save on network bandwidth for video streaming, and increases the efficiency by adaptively changing the speed of patch streams and patching window based on time of the day and video popularity. To analyze the algorithm, we consider a 2.488-Gbps GPON network providing VoD service to 512 households. We use a daily video request model and a video popularity model to determine the adaptive streaming speed and dynamic patching window. Numerical results show that, when the available network bandwidth is reduced below the required level due to background traffic, the algorithm can considerably reduce the average user waiting time and the number of waiting requests.

multicast communication has been a major avenue for many studies in interconnection networks. However, such a communication pattern has been studied under either limited operating conditions or within the context of deterministic routing algorithms. This paper investigates the impact of routing algorithms, both deterministic and adaptive routing on the multicast communication over interconnection network. In particular, we focus on the provision of efficient multicast communication algorithms in interconnection networks. Using detailed simulation experiments, different multicast algorithms have been compared for a range of system sizes, traffic loads, and destination nodes. For the case of multicast latency, our proposed algorithms exhibit the best performance when the traffic load is high and the start-up overhead does not dominates the propagation overhead. The results also highlight the impact of adaptive routing on both latency and throughput when designing efficient multicast algorithms. Thus, these results demonstrate significant potential to be applied to current and future generation interconnection networks.

A wireless ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of autonomous nodes or terminals that communicate with each other by forming a multihop radio network and maintaining connectivity in a decentralized manner. MANET is characterized by a rapidly changed topology. As a result packets select different multi-hops paths to reach their destinations. Even though packets are somehow independent from each other, there are still some hidden relations (patterns) among them. These relations may be utilized to give useful information to different MANET protocols. In this work, association rules technique is applied in time domain to obtain these hidden relations.

Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of autonomous nodes or terminals that communicate with each other by forming a multihop radio network. These nodes maintain connectivity in a decentralized manner. MANET is characterized by a rapidly changing topology. Nowadays, simulation is the research tool of the mobile ad hoc network (MANET) community. NS2 is one of the most popular open source network simulators [7]. It has a vital open source code to develop new protocols in mobile ad hoc networks. This work presents one data mining technique that may improve the MANET simulation in NS2.

The goal of this paper is to present a system able to support the network delivery of live events in an expected, future Digital Cinema scenario. This service can consume a large amount of network bandwidth, due to the large volume of transmitted data and to the number of receivers, thus multicast transmission proves to be very useful. Consequently, a key issue of the system is the request routing algorithm, the goal of which is to optimise the QoS-guaranteed delivery of live streams in the backbone, each one towards a set of theatres. We consider the Multi Protocol Label Switching, which has emerged as an elegant solution to meet traffic engineering and resource reservation requirements, and focus on the overall request routing procedure, the mathematical modelling of the problem, and relevant solving algorithms. We present the comparative performance evaluation of these algorithms by means of an extensive simulation campaign performed with the OMNET++ simulation platform.

In this paper, a new distributed clustering algorithm for mobile ad hoc networks, named as DCCS (Distributed Clustering Algorithm Based on delta- Cluster Stability) is proposed. The cluster stability of node, which is defined in this paper, is applied to clustering for mobile ad hoc networks. This algorithm is implemented on the ns2 environment, and compared with classical Lowest-ID clustering algorithm and Highest Degrees clustering algorithm. The results of simulation on ns2 simulator show that the proposed algorithm can improve efficiently clustering performances in terms of the number of clusterhead, and the number of reaffiliations per unit time.

Web server scalability can be greatly enhanced via hybrid data dissemination methods that use both unicast and multicast. Hybrid data dissemination is particularly promising due to the development of effective end-to-end multicast methods and tools. Hybrid data dissemination critically relies on document selection which determines the data transfer method that is most appropriate for each data item. In this paper, we study document selection with a special focus on actual end-point implementations and Internet network conditions. We individuate special challenges such as scalable and robust popularity estimation, appropriate classification of hot and cold documents, and unpopular large documents. We propose solutions to these problems, integrate them in MBDD (middleware support multicast-based data dissemination) and evaluate them on PlanetLab with collected traces. Results show that the multicast server can effectively adapt to dynamic environments and is substantially more scalable than traditional Web servers. Our work is a significant contribution to building practical hybrid data dissemination services.
