Tactical naming service is a critical component of tactical communications systems, which provides essential name-address resolution and service discovery for tactical users. Generally speaking, tactical users of land communications systems can be categorized into stationary HQ users (users in headquarters network), mounted users (users in vehicle networks), and dismounted users (users in mobile ad hoc networks). The greatest technical challenge facing the tactical naming services stems from dynamic and mobile nature of these mounted and dismounted segments (MDS) with low-bandwidth and/or unreliable communication links. Traditional DNS is part of the problem space rather than a solution because DNS server has to be dynamically discovered for all remote clients through the tactical naming service in the first place. Zeroconf solutions such as multicast DNS (mDNS) and link-local multicast name resolution (LLMNAR) and distributed hash table (DHT) based solutions offer potential remedy for MDS. Since these technologies are originally conceived for the internet and commercial network domains, feasibility of applying these technologies into MDS still remains elusive. In this paper we evaluate multicast query and DHT based solutions from a tactical perspective through analytic modelling and simulation and give quantitative measures regarding their limitations. Based on analysis of these existing technologies we present a hybrid naming service approach that fits into the whole spectrum of MDS.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of opportunistic scheduling for delivering multicast information in an OFDM-based cellular network. The problem is formulated as a system throughput maximization problem subject to the fairness constraints derived from each user's specific minimum QoS requirement. As a solution we design an opportunistic scheduling algorithm based on a priority metric that follows an exponential rule. The metric takes into account the current channel state information to take advantage of the better channel states observed by different subsets of the multicast users at different time slots and sub-bands in order to increase the system throughput. The metric also explicitly includes a term to compensate the deviations observed by individual users from their QoS targets. Hence, our proposed algorithm jointly considers two issues in multicasting: throughput maximization and fairness in terms of the targeted QoS levels. In the paper, we further investigate the impact of feedback frequency on the system performance. For scenarios where feedback is not available for every time slot, a probabilistic scheduling algorithm is proposed based on a finite state Markov channel (FSMC) that models the underlying fading channel. Our simulation results show that our algorithm can achieve significantly better performance compared to other commonly used algorithms. Moreover, the solution can also achieve graceful performance degradation when CSI feedback is not available at every time slot.

The goal of this work is to design a new adaptive routing technique for ad hoc wireless networks. This paper proposed the basic deign of the algorithm that works based on the principle of ant colony optimization (ACO). This is a probabilistic adaptive technique that changes its routes with the change of network topology over the period of time by learning its environment. It identifies appropriate paths with the feedback of previously travelled packets and maintains routing table accordingly. A self-made simulator implemented on C++ is used to evaluate performance of this algorithm on the basis of diverse adaptive issues such as change of probability, growth of pheromone intensity, randomness of the selection and packet sending rate through different paths.

As an alternative to the algebraic network codes prevalent in the literature, we consider Arithmetic Network Codes (henceforth abbreviated as ANCs), i.e., codes in which interior nodes perform finite precision arithmetic over the real or complex fields. We suggest two applications where using such codes can be advantageous. First, we demonstrate that the multi-resolution behaviour of ANCs potentially outperforms that of algebraic network codes. Second, the interfering and fading nature of wireless channels naturally results in complex linear combinations of transmissions, analogous to ANCs. We then characterize the multicast rates achievable by ANCs, and demonstrate that for high precision arithmetic these are equivalent to those obtained by algebraic network codes. We show the connection between the performance of ANCs and the numerical conditioning of network transform matrices. Using this, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the number of significant bits required to perform the finite precision arithmetic in terms of the network parameters. We compare this with simulation results for randomized and deterministic design of ANCs.

The new generation vehicles will have many sophisticated systems such as drive-by-wire, navigation, traffic congestion control, road guidance, and advance crash warning. Already, dozens of onboard computers control complex vehicle functions. From time to time, an onboard computer needs reprogramming. Currently, dealers manually reprogram software in onboard computers via a wire based electrical connection. Updating software wirelessly is a preferred alternative to the manual method because the vehicle need not be physically present at a repair facility to perform the update. Wireless software reprogramming will save customers' and technicians' time and money. In this paper, we present a wireless download algorithm for reprogramming of vehicles' electronic control units, using current wireless technologies. Our algorithm proposes a hybrid infrastructure that combines wireless unicasting and multicasting data delivery.

This paper studies video multicasting in large scale areas using wireless mesh networks. The focus is on the use of Internet access gateways that allow a choice of alternative routes to avoid potentially lengthy multi-hop wireless paths with low capacity. A set of heuristic-based algorithms are described that together aim to maximize network capacity: the two-tier integrated architecture algorithm, the weighted gateway uploading algorithm, the link-controlled routing tree algorithm, and the alternative channel assignment algorithm. These algorithms use different approaches to arrange multicast group members into a clustered and two-tier integrated architecture in which network protocols can make use of multiple gateways to improve system throughput. Simulation results are used to determine the performance of the different approaches.

We consider the optimized joint design of the physical, medium access control, and network layers to maximize the lifetime of energy constrained wireless ad hoc networks for online multicast applications. We consider two types of lifetime definitions, first node failure and multicast functionality. For each definition, we investigate two energy efficient approaches of minimum total energy and min-max per node energy usage to maximize network lifetime. Using network coding at the network layer, the problem of computing multipath flow for both schemes is formulated as a linear optimization problem. Simulation results are provided assessing the effectiveness of the algorithms.

We investigate the problem of integrating network coding into heterogeneous wireless networks where a number of coding nodes are to be placed among legacy nodes that do not handle network coding operations well. In particular, we seek to understand better the following questions: 1) how many coding nodes are needed, 2) where should the coding nodes be located, and 3) how should the coding nodes interact with other non-coding nodes? To this aim, we apply our previously proposed evolutionary algorithm that operates as a distributed protocol and present quantifiable results through various simulations. We also consider the algorithmpsilas operation in lossy environments and show that the temporally distributed structure of our algorithm offers a significant advantage in overcoming the adverse effect of packet erasures.

In this paper we prove the equivalence of several definitions of generic network code. Based on these results we present a unified framework for linear network codes. This unified framework enables us to show that generic network code is the best possible in terms of linear independence. It also enables the simplification of the proofs of several existing results.

In this paper, we study the problem of utility maximization in peer-to-peer (P2P) systems, in which aggregate utilities are maximized by running distributed algorithms on P2P nodes that are constrained by their uplink capacities. This may be understood as extending the seminal flow control framework in (F. P. Kelly et al., 1998) and (S. H. Low et al.,1999) from single-path unicast over general topology to multi-path multicast over P2P topology, with network coding allowed. For single-rate multicast over certain popular P2P topologies, we show that routing along a linear number of trees per source can achieve the largest rate region that can be possibly obtained by (inter-session) network coding. This simplification result allows us to develop a new multi-tree routing formulation for the problem. Despite of the negative results in literature on convergence of primal-dual algorithms under multi-path settings, we have been able to develop a delay-based primal-dual algorithm to solve our multi-tree based utility maximization problem. We characterize the convergence behavior of the Primal-dual algorithm, and utilize our proposed sufficient condition to show its global convergence to the optimal solution under different P2P communication scenarios we study. We also discuss how to extend our solution for single-rate multicast to multi-rate multicast.
