We consider the multiple antenna multicasting channel, in which a common message is simultaneously transmitted to multiple users in a wireless cellular network, under the assumption that channel state information (CSI) is perfectly available at the transmitter. In this paper, we develop a simple recursive algorithm to determine the co- variance matrix of the transmitted signal vector. For a large number of transmit antennas or a large number of users, we show that the growth rate of the maximum achievable rate of the proposed scheme is the same as that of the optimal scheme while reducing computational complexity dramatically.

The MAODV (multicast Ad hoc On-demand Vector) routing protocol shows a smooth performance in light load ad hoc networks. However, as the network loads increase, the Quality of service (QoS) will be degraded quickly. A MAODV-based multipath routing algorithm, namely MP-MAODV, is presented, which distributes traffic through two node-disjoint routes to improve network efficiency and balances the network loads. Only when the two links are broken, the source nodes restart to find new routes. So it decreases the number of routing discovery and reduces routing overhead. Mathematic modeling analysis and simulations show that the MP-MAODV preferably ensures the network performance in heavy load ad hoc networks.

In wireless ad-hoc networks, where nodes are often equipped with batteries, energy is a scarce resource. Therefore, power consumption of network operations is critical and subject to optimization. One of the fundamental problems in ad-hoc networks is multicasting. In this work we consider the so-called minimum energy multicast (MEM) problem, which can be stated as a combinatorial optimization problem. We develop an ant colony optimization metaheuristic for networks with omni-directional and directional antennas. The results show that our algorithm consistently outperforms existing techniques.

This paper provides an overview of MediaDART, a framework for building online services for distributing and sharing digital media. Inspired by the participative model of Web 2.0, MediaDART relies on a scalable and decentralized architecture that can grow with the contribution of users. The architecture is based on an arbitrary number of nodes interconnected through a p2p network implementing a distributed hash table (DHT). The DHT provides resource storage and parallel resource processing for operations of feature extraction, adaptation and composition. MediaDART adopts application-level multicast based on distribution trees for delivery in streaming and implements algorithms to dynamically replicate resources across the network. The framework allows content description through user-defined tags. Tools for personalized content retrieval based on recommendation algorithms and user profiling are included too. This paper also describes two prototype applications and outlines further work.

Single frequency networks (SFN) broadcast is an efficient method to provide broadcast services in cellular networks. How to select broadcast services by the SFN operation to trade off between the occupied bandwidth and the SFN performance including spectrum efficiency and broadcast service continuity is a new problem. To the best of our knowledge no solutions have been proposed to solve this problem so far in the literature. We define the problem of SFN broadcast services selection as a knapsack problem and solve it to minimize the occupied bandwidth while at the same time guaranteeing the SFN performance. Based on the solution, several SFN broadcast services selection algorithms are proposed which vary in the reselection policy. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithms are applicable to different cases with different system requirements and in particular, that the semi-dynamic-SFN broadcast services selection algorithm is an efficient solution in general.

Adaptive processing overlay multicasting for Web-based broadcasting provides efficient service for multi-users sharing application with single sources. A mechanism is proposed by locally applying children-parents-role swapping in trees by adopting a swapping function in overlay protocol. Performance efficient results for real-time, concurrent service is achieved with stream trees with locally swapped nodes having maximum peak RTTs of about 0.6 seconds - better than TBCP and HMTP. The proposed scheme does well in terms of session connections, especially when multi-userspsila number grows. Number of hosts against group size after the local swapping seems to be the best and maximum average relative delay penalty (ARDP) of less than 6 units indicates that the new mechanism welcomes modest services in stream groups with affordable penalty, regardless of hostspsila number. The swapped trees perform better in terms of costs, average RTT, number of hosts, and ARDP.

Video surveillance systems have been playing an important role to protect lives and assets of individuals, enterprises and governments for decades. Due to the prevalence of wired and wireless access to Internet, ubiquitous video surveillance (UVS) service could be fulfilled to provide diversified surveillance services. In this paper, forwarding agents of multicast agent (MA) and super agent (SA) with security protection via Diffie-Hellman key exchange algorithm are proposed for UVS, so forwarding agents can provide surveillance video streaming service with scalability, ubiquity and privacy on the public Internet. FEC is also applied for reliable surveillance-video multicast to preserve the playback quality of UVS both on Internet and 802.11 Wireless-LAN. The experimental results from the deployed UVS test-bed with Wi-Fi Internet access demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes for UVS.

Handover Control is one of the essential means to guarantee the continuity of mobile services to a user traveling in a cellular infrastructure, without interruption. In previous work we illustrated that using the current 3GPP specified handover control algorithm to provide continuity of MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast multicast Service) services to a user crossing cell boundaries results either in capacity or QoS inefficiencies and proposed a new MEHO (Mobile Evaluated Handover) based MBMS handover control algorithm that compensated for them. This algorithm, although effective in terms of capacity and QoS, has some limitations concerning the way certain parameters vital for the efficient MBMS handover execution are estimated. In this paper, using a different approach (Network Evaluated Handover (NEHO)), we enhance previous work and propose a different method, that eliminates all of its predecessorpsilas deficiencies while achieving the same capacity and QoS efficiencies.

SNMP, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3 are the standard protocols for network management in traditional wired networks. New RFCs have updated SNMP, but it remains focused on high-availability, high-bandwidth networks. In the dynamic MANET of tactical edge networks, fast-moving aircraft and terrain obscuration combine to create conditions where traditional SNMP is less effective. In this paper, we propose innovative ways to improve SNMP agent/manager interactions, specifically addressing the limitations of a bandwidth constrained tactical edge network. We will analyze the performance improvements using a variety of aggregation techniques of multicast, reliable multicast and aggregation techniques to enhance the SNMP agent/manager interactions thus conserving bandwidth but still monitor and provide network situational awareness to the war fighter. Performance analysis will be conducted through a combination of simulation and emulation environments, and the results will be discussed.
