The future Internet traffic growth will require deployment of optical transmission systems with bit rates higher than rate of currently available 40-Gb/s systems, such as 100-Gb/s and above. However, at data rates beyond 100-Gb/s the signal quality is significantly degraded mainly due to impact of polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and intra-channel nonlinear effects. All electrically time-division multiplexed (ETDM) multiplexers and de-multiplexers operating at similar to 100-Gb/s are becoming commercially available. However, the modulators operating similar to 100-Gb/s are not widely available so that alternative approaches to enable 100-Gb/s transmission and beyond using commercially available components operating at 40-Gb/s are of high practical importance. In this invited paper, several joint coded-modulation and multiplexing schemes enabling beyond 100-Gb/s transmission using commercially available components operating at 40-Gb/s are presented. Using this approach, modulation, coding and multiplexing are performed in a unified fashion so that, effectively, the transmission, signal processing, detection and decoding are done at much lower symbol rates, where dealing with the nonlinear effects and PMD is more manageable, while the aggregate data rate is maintained above 100-Gb/s. The main elements of our approach include: (i) bit-interleaved LDPC-coded modulation, (ii) multilevel coding (MLC) with LPDC component codes, and (iii) LDPC-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The modulation formats of interest in this paper are M-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) and Mary phase-shift keying (PSK), where M=2,...,16, both combined with either Gray or natural mapping rule. It will be shown that coherent detection schemes significantly outperform direct detection ones and provide an additional margin that can be used either for longer transmission distances or for application in an all-optical networks.

Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are commonly utilized in magnetic recording systems to correct error bursts. Soft-output Viterbi algorithm (SOYA) is a commonly used detector to provide soft information to error-correcting decoders. We propose a novel architecture of multilevel interleaved RS coding scheme that not only provides better performance but also has less complexity than an equivalent RS code. This architecture implements an error event detector using the soft information generated by the SOYA detector.

In this paper, we address some performance issues of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels with a nulling and cancellation (N/C) detector, which is based on the QR factorization. We find a theoretical bit error rate (BER) expression. The concept of multilevel coding has been adopted for optimizing the performance of a multistage receiver with the N/C detector when a channel code is employed. Through simulations, the performance has been studied for coded signals. It has been shown that the optimization of code rate for each layer is an effective means to improve the performance when the multistage receiver is employed.

A new space-time coding scheme is drawn upon the concepts of concatenation, multilevel coding, and spatial modulation. In light of a space-time block coded spatial modulation scheme, several component codes are combined in conjunction with set partitioning of the transmission matrix set according to the coding gain distance criterion. Then, the associated scheme is further concatenated with an outer Reed-Solomon code. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is superior as regards its bit error performance.

Motivated by the capacity-approaching property of both binary polar codes (PCs) and the multi-level coding (MLC) scheme, we consider the design of modulated PC over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The capability of modulated PC essentially depends on the selection of information bits set from all the virtual bit channels formed by both modulation and channel polarization. To this end, we characterize the a priori distribution density as the sufficient statistic for the bit channel of individual modulation levels formed by an MLC scheme, in which the codeword of symbols is split into parallel bits streams. According to the factor graph generated by the binary PC, we apply the density evolution (DE) for each binary modulation level. Consequently, distribution densities of every bit within the modulated codeword can be obtained and we select the most reliable bits as information bits and set the complement as frozen bits. Comprehensive simulations demonstrate the validness of this approach compared to the benchmark scheme.

The analytic estimation of the error probability at the individual levels of a multilevel coding (MLC) scheme based on the distance profile in Euclidean space is given. An obvious application is to design the individual rates of an MLC scheme according to the criterion of approximately equal bit error probabilities at all levels. This so-called error probability rule is demonstrated for 16-state convolutional codes.

In this paper, we evaluate a multilevel coding (MLC) scheme with multi-stage decoding (MSD) designed for satellite broadcasting communications, where services with different quality of service (QoS) are desirable. A simple Land-Mobile-Satellite (LMS) channel model is presented, based on channel states and their transitions. The instantaneous channel capacity for suburban and forest scenarios is calculated using the mutual information concept. An established transmission scheme for satellite broadcasting, which uses bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) with Gray mapping, is compared with the MLC scheme in terms of channel capacity and outage probability. The effect of removing a long channel interleaver in the physical layer is analyzed, showing that the MLC scheme is a good alternative to BICM for satellite broadcasting.

The joint design of input constellation and low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to approach the symmetric capacity of the two-user Gaussian multiple access channel is studied. More specifically, multilevel coding is employed at each user to construct a high-order input constellation and the constellations of the users are jointly designed so as to maximize the multiuser shaping gain. At the receiver, each layer of the multilevel coding is jointly decoded among users, while successive cancellation is employed across layers. The LDPC code employed by each user in each layer is designed using EXIT charts to support joint decoding among users for the prescribed per-layer rate and SNR. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the proposed constellation and LDPC code designs.

Combination of channel coding and modulation has been demonstrated to have high power and bandwidth efficiency. Compared with polar codes, the concatenated polar codes boost the error rate probability to almost exponential in the block-length with essentially no loss in computational complexity. In this paper, a concatenated polar-coded multilevel modulation scheme is proposed, where polar codes are the inner codes and Reed-Solomon or low density parity check codes are chosen as the outer codes. The bit error rate (BER) performances of the proposed scheme are analyzed for different inner polar code length and different inner polar code rate. The numerical simulation results show that the scheme has significantly improved in the BER performance in comparison with those results using multilevel polar-coded modulation and single level concatenated-polar coded modulation scheme. With the increase of code length and the decrease of code rate of the inner polar codes, the system has a better BER performance.
