Media coding for the next generation mobile system LTE

Introduction of LTE (Long Term Evolution) brings enhanced quality for 3GPP multimedia services. The high throughput and low latency of LTE enable higher quality media coding than what is possible in UMTS. LIE-specific codecs have not yet been defined but work on them is ongoing in 3GPP. The LIE codecs are expected to improve the basic signal quality, but also to offer new capabilities such as extended audio bandwidth, stereo and multi-channels for voice and higher temporal and spatial resolutions for video. Due to the wide range of functionalities in media coding, LIE gives more flexibility for service provision to cope with heterogeneous terminal capabilities and transmission over heterogeneous network conditions. By adjusting the bit-rate, the computational complexity, and the spatial and temporal resolution of audio and video, transport and rendering can be optimised throughout the media path hence guaranteeing the best possible quality of service. Video over TETRA employing MPEG-4 visual coding standard

Video transmission over Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) mobile channel employing MPEG-4 visual coding standard is proposed in this paper. Detail parameters of the proposed systems are discussed in this paper. Performance of the proposed systems was evaluated in Average Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (APSNR) versus Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER). In particular, the video quality that can be achieved at different channel conditions and employing different combinations of MPEG-4 visual error resilient tools is presented in this paper. Results obtained show that higher video bitrate does not necessarily lead to higher video quality at the receiver as the received video quality depends on the bit error pattern or the number of error free video packets.

Hierarchical 2-D mesh representation, tracking, and compression for object-based video

This paper proposes methods for designing, tracking and coding hierarchical two-dimensional (2-D) content-based mesh representations. The design procedure consists of constructing a fine-to-coarse hierarchy of Delaunay meshes, using image- and shape-based criteria for mesh geometry simplification. Hierarchical tracking employs a coarse-to-fine strategy with mesh-based motion vector optimization, We introduce new techniques to maintain the initial mesh hierarchy and topology during tracking by imposing certain constraints at each stage of the procedure, The hierarchical compression technique is based on a nearest neighbor ordering of mesh node points. This ordering serves to identify the mesh boundary nodes as well as establish spatial predictors for differential coding of node coordinates and motion vectors, The proposed hierarchical mesh representation, which has applications in object-based video manipulation, indexing, and compression, provides improved tracking performance (compared to a nonhierarchical representation) and allows progressive (scalable) transmission of the object geometry (including shape) and motion information, as well as variable level-of-detail rendering, Experimental results are presented to compare the tracking and compression performance of hierarchical versus nonhierarchical mesh representations and to demonstrate the tradeoff between image quality and mesh bit rate for 2-D mesh-based video object rendering.

A new approach to spatial compression of stereoscopic videos

This paper presents a new spatial compression method specifically designed for stereo videos. Different form current compressors, which simply apply known 2D compression techniques, the method proposed here was developed taking into account specificities of the components of the spatial compression process which may impact the correct depth visualization, named Chrominance Subsampling, Discrete WaveletTransform (DWT) and Quantization. Each component was evaluated analyzing where datalosses occur and proposing ways to provide a good balance between compression ratio and image quality, minimizing losses in depth perception. The evaluations were made using standard objective (PSNR) and subjective (DSCQS) metrics, applied to an anaglyphic stereoscopic video base. The results showedour method is competitive regarding compression rate and providessuperior image quality.

This paper introduces the datacasting coding scheme named Broadcast Markup Language (BML). BML is used for all the digital broadcast such as satellite and terrestrial digital broadcasting in Japan. BML is based on web technology standard;however some extensions and restrictions are applied for broadcast purposes. These extensions and restrictions are introduced in this paper.

Error concealment using information hiding has been an efficient tool to combat channel impairments that degrade the transmitted data quality by introducing channel errors/packet losses. The proposed model takes a stream of multimedia content and the binarised stream is subjected to bit level enhanced mapping procedure (PRASAN - Enhanced NFD approach) accompanied with a set of convergence models that ensure a high degree of convergence for a given error norm. The mapping is performed between the current frames with respect to the previous frame in case of video data. This approach often referred to as the correlation generation is followed by convergence mathematical function generation. This function is derived based on trying out the various convergence methodologies in a weighted round robin environment and choosing the best matching function by computing the mean square error. This error is termed map-fault and is kept a minimum. The test data taken are subjected to noisy channel environments and the Power Signal to Noise Ratios obtained experimentally support firmly the advantage of the proposed methodology in comparison to existing approaches.

multimedia compression is an essential data processing procedure to any Content Delivery Network (CDN). Autoencoder is a data driven model which compresses the high dimensional inputs into a low dimensional latent representation creating a bottleneck impelling the model to learn a compression which is able to reconstruct the input with minimum error. The model searches for patterns in the data to reduce the input dimensionality fitting the input through the bottleneck while minimizing the reconstruction loss. Conventional autoencoder's latent representation exploits intra-sample correlation without taking advantage of the inter-samples correlation. Our model, Multi-instance Conditional Autoencoder, compresses many files to comprise one latent representation, and then restore each file individually in the decoding phase. We achieved higher compression rate compared to traditional autoencoder in case of audio files, Javanese and VoxCeleb datasets, where data correlation is sufficiently high.

Speech and music discrimination has gained much popularity in recent years for efficient coding and automatic retrieval of multimedia sources and Automated Speech Recognition (ASR). Two novel features that can be concatenated with Mel frequency cepstral coefficients are presented in this paper: Delta Cepstral Energy (DCE) and Power Spectrum Deviation (PSDev). Employing a Gaussian mixture model for classification as a back-end to the system, a significant improvement in the error rate was found using these features. The effects of different musical instruments on error rates were also analyzed. Low frequency musical instruments like piano and electric bass guitar were found to be more difficult to discriminate from speech, however, the proposed features are also able to reduce such errors significantly.

In this paper, from the standpoint of their potential for multimedia applications/services we examine key new elements of the MPEG-4 standard as well as concepts Leading to the ongoing work for the MPEG-7 standard. We first examine generic requirements common to several practical future multimedia applications/services. We then identify and examine key new features of the MPEG-4 standard such as, image/video objects, facial animation, advanced sound, integration with the web, multi-user worlds and Java control. Next, we briefly review the goal, requirements and progress in the ongoing work on the MPEG-7 standard. We then discuss the player we intend to use which integrates a number of key features of MPEG-4 and search and retrieval concepts similar to that of MPEG-7 standard, as well as how to create content for the player. Next, we discuss an example multimedia application that we have developed. Finally, we summarize the key highlights of the paper.
