multiple description coding (MDC) is one of the most efficient methods to combat error-prone channels especially when retransmission is unacceptable. In applications involving scalable, multicast and P2P environments, it is advantageous to use more than two descriptions. In this paper, we present an adaptable temporal- spatial error concealment method based on error tracking to improve the performance of MDC. A Gilbert model is used as the channel model for burst packet loss simulation. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

In this paper, we generalize the concept of natural type selection, initially proposed by *** ***., to multiple description coding. We prove results that are parallel to those of adaptive single description coding. A universal multiple description coding scheme is then proposed. The scheme codes a source vector at a time, and updates its codebooks based on the joint type of the codewords reconstructed previously. Based on our theoretical results, it can be shown that the rate-distortion performance of the proposed scheme gradually improves as coding proceeds.

3D video applications are growing more common as communication technology becomes more predominant nowadays. With such increasing demand for the 3D multimedia services in either the wired or wireless networks, robust methods of video streaming will be introduced to show more favorable efficiency outcomes since packet failure is an integral characteristic of communication networks. This paper aims to introduce a new reliable method of stereoscopic video streaming based on multiple description coding (MDC) strategy. The proposed multiple description coding generates four 3D video descriptions considering the interesting objects contained in the scene. To be able to find the interesting objects in the scene, we use two metrics from the second-order statistics of the depth map image in a block-wise manner. Having detected the objects, the proposed multiple description coding algorithm generates the descriptions for the color video using a nonidentical decimation method with respect to the identified objects. To show how much reliable the proposed MDC method is, this article assumes that due to the unreliable communication channel, only one description, among four encoded descriptions, is delivered to the receiver successfully. Therefore, the receiver needs to estimate the missed descriptions' data from the available description. Since the human eye is more sensitive to objects than it is to pixels, the proposed method provides a better visual performance in view of its subjective assessment. Although, the objective test results verify the fact that the proposed method provides an improved performance than the Polyphase SubSampling (PSS) multiple description coding and our previous work using pixel variation. Regarding the depth map image, the proposed method generates the multiple descriptions according to the pixel prediction difficulty level. Capacity Results for the Multicast Cognitive Interference Channel

The capacity region of the multicast Cognitive Inter-Ference Channel (CIFC) is investigated. This channel consists of two independent transmitters that wish to multicast two different messages, each to a different set of users. In addition, one of the transmitters-commonly referred to as the cognitive transmitter-has prior non-causal knowledge of both messages to be transmitted. This scenario subsumes some long-standing open problems, such as the interference channel, the broadcast channel, and multicast communications. The aim of this paper is the derivation of optimal interference mitigation techniques under different interference regimes. To this end, two settings, namely the multi-primary CIFC, i.e., M = 1 and N >= 1, and its complementary, the multi-secondary CIFC, i.e., N = 1 and M >= 1, are investigated as an attempt to build a thorough understanding for the more general multicast CIFC setting. It is shown that, for some interference regimes, well-known coding techniques for the standard CIFC remain still optimal under the constraint of multicasting to multiple users. However, in other interference regimes, capacity achieving coding and decoding schemes prove to be more involved. A careful combination of these coding schemes and new outer bounding techniques allows to characterize the capacity region for several classes of discrete memoryless and Gaussian multicast CIFC under different interference regimes.

QoS-aware routing protocol using adaptive retransmission of distorted descriptions in MDC for MANETs

Quality of service (QoS) of delay sensitive application like video stream is majorly affected by instantaneous channel conditions over noisy mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). Methods like forward error correction (FEC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ), multiple descnption coding (MDC), and MDC with error correction (MDC_EC) design to recover the quality of the video in noisy wireless networks under perform m MANETs because of their high overheads and high retransmission delay. MDC and MDC_EC produce unacceptable video quality at the receiver and fail to fulfil the QoS requirements of the video applications. We have proposed a novel routing protocol to support QoS and reduce overheads. The proposed work is twofold: i) redefine the distortion model to estimate the distortion of the transmitted video;ii) proposed a novel routing protocol model to mitigate the impact of channel noise on the video quality through selected retransmission of noisy descriptors (MDC_EC_RE).

In this work, the global/local content characteristics are utilized in order to improve the delivery chain of the video sequences. The work is divided into four main parts that take advantages of video content features. The first part introduces a joint content-complexity encoder parameters prediction model. This model uses bitrate, distortion, and complexity of different parameters configurations in order to get the recommended encoder parameters value. Then, the links between content features and the recommended values are identified. Finally, the prediction model is built using these features and the recommended encoder parameter values. The second part illustrates the proposed multiple description coding (MDC) scheme that is optimized for high-order MDC. The corresponding decoding and content-dependent error recovery procedures are also identified. The quality of the received videos is evaluated subjectively. By analyzing the subjective experiment results, an adaptive, i. e. content-aware, scheme is introduced. Finally, an application scenario is simulated to study the realistic bitrate consumption. The third part uses the motion properties of a content to introduce a motion map that will be used as an input for the modified state-of-the-art inpainting based error concealment algorithm. A subjective experiment was conducted to evaluate the algorithm and also to study the content-aware observer's disturbance when perceiving the processed videos. The fourth part has two sub-parts, the first one is about HRC selection algorithms for the large-scale video database with an improved performance evaluation measures for video quality assessment algorithms using training and validation sets. The second part introduces global content aware no-reference video quality assessment.

In this paper, we propose three novel multiple description coding (MDC) methods for reliable transmission of compressed animated meshes represented by series of 3D static meshes with same connectivity. The proposed methods trade off reconstruction quality for error resilience to provide the best expected reconstruction of 3D mesh sequence at the decoder side. The methods are based on layer duplication and partitioning of the set of vertices of a scalable coded animated mesh by either spatial or temporal subsampling. Each partitioned set is encoded separately to generate independently decodable bit-streams or so-called descriptions. In addition, the proposed MDC methods can achieve varying redundancy allocations by including a number of encoded spatial or temporal layers from the other description. The algorithms are evaluated with redundancy-rate-distortion (RRD) curves and per-frame reconstruction analysis. RRD performances show that vertex partitioning-based MDC performs better at low redundancies for especially spatially dense models. Temporal subsampling-based MDC performs better at moderate redundancies as well as low redundancies for spatially coarse models. Layer duplication-based MDC can achieve the lowest redundancies with flexible redundancy allocation capability and can be designed to achieve the smallest variance of reconstruction quality between consecutive frames. This paper proposes a rate controlled redundancy-adaptive multiple description video coding method. The method adjusts the level of redundancy allocated to each macroblock based on an end to end distortion model that takes into account the effects of error propagation and concealment. Rate control at the macroblock level ensures that the total bit rate of all descriptions does not exceed the target rate. Results show that the proposed MDC codec can adapt very well to changing transmission conditions. Gains of up to 14 dB at high packet error rates (low SNR) were recorded when coupled with a MIMO architecture, with no perceptible performance deficit at low packet error rates (high SNR). 2011 Elsevier B.V. Supporting video transmission over error-prone mobile ad-hoc networks is becoming increasingly important as these networks become more widely deployed. We propose a routing-aware multiple description video coding approach to support video transmission over mobile ad-hoc networks with multiple path transport. We build a statistical model to estimate the packet loss probability of each packet transmitted over the network based on the standard ad-hoc routing messages and network parameters. We then estimate the frame loss probability and dynamically select reference frames in order to alleviate error propagation caused by the packet losses. We conduct experiments using the QualNet simulator that accounts for node mobility, channel properties, MAC operation, multipath routing, and traffic type. The results demonstrate that our proposed method provides 0.7-2.3 dB gains in PSNR for different video sequences under different network settings and guarantees better video quality for a selectably high number of users of the network. Furthermore, we examine the estimation accuracy of our proposed estimation model and show that our model works effectively under various network settings.
