multiple description codes have been shown to facilitate heterogeneous multicast using routing with replication. We develop the combination of practical network coding and multiple description coding (introduced by Chou et al.), but here for video multicast in lossless networks where users get video according to their available resources. We also show that network coding enables the server to provide Quality of Service that is centrally controlled. The lack of the need to maintain multiple trees (as in routing) helps in ease of construction of the multicast delivery system. The simulation results show that using practical network coding provides significant control over the rate allocation for the resources.

A three-layer scheme is developed for M-channel multiple description image coding. In each description, a subset of the source is encoded in the first layer. In the second layer, the remaining subsets are encoded sequentially by predicting from the already encoded subsets. Each description can thus produce a coarse reconstruction of the source. When multiple descriptions are received, a refined reconstruction is obtained by fusing all coarse reconstructions. A third layer is further included to refine the reconstruction when only one description is lost, which dominates when the probability of channel error is low. We first derive the closed-form expressions of the expected distortion of the system for 1-D sources. The proposed scheme is then applied to lapped transform-based image coding, where we formulate and obtain the optimal lapped transform. Image coding results show that the proposed method outperforms other latest schemes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The resource allocation optimization for multicast service in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems is an important research topic. It is known that in traditional multicast schemes the rate in each multicast group is severely limited by the user who has the minimum channel gain (MCG) on each subchannel. To counteract this effect, in this paper, we introduce the multiple description coding (MDC) into the multiple-group multicast service optimization for the downlink OFDMA, and study the weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization methods under various system constraints and assuming discrete-rate modulation. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides a significant performance enhancement than the MCG scheme and an MDC-based near-optimal iterative bit loading (IBL) approach. Besides this, our method converges very fast and enjoys a low complexity that is linear in the numbers of users, subchannels, and modulation bit levels.

In this paper, we propose a multiple description coding (MDC) method for reliable transmission of compressed time consistent 3D dynamic meshes. It trades off reconstruction quality for error resilience to provide the best expected reconstruction of 3D mesh sequence at the decoder side. The method is based on partitioning the mesh frames into two sets by temporal subsampling and encoding each set independently by a 3D dynamic mesh coder. The encoded independent bitstreams or so-called descriptions are transmitted independently. The 3D dynamic mesh coder is based on predictive coding with spatial and temporal layered decomposition. In addition, the proposed method allows for different redundancy allocations by including a number of encoded spatial layers of the frames in the other set. The algorithm is evaluated with redundancy-rate-distortion curves and it is shown that, when one of the descriptions is lost, acceptable quality can be achieved with around 50% redundancy.

In this paper, a new compressive sampling-based image coding scheme is developed to achieve competitive coding efficiency at lower encoder computational complexity, while supporting error resilience. This technique is particularly suitable for visual communication with resource-deficient devices. At the encoder, compact image representation is produced, which is a polyphase down-sampled version of the input image;but the conventional low-pass filter prior to down-sampling is replaced by a local random binary convolution kernel. The pixels of the resulting down-sampled pre-filtered image are local random measurements and placed in the original spatial configuration. The advantages of the local random measurements are two folds: 1) preserve high-frequency image features that are otherwise discarded by low-pass filtering and 2) remain a conventional image and can therefore be coded by any standardized codec to remove the statistical redundancy of larger scales. Moreover, measurements generated by different kernels can be considered as the multiple descriptions of the original image and therefore the proposed scheme has the advantage of multiple description coding. At the decoder, a unified sparsity-based soft-decoding technique is developed to recover the original image from received measurements in a framework of compressive sensing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is competitive compared with existing methods, with a unique strength of recovering fine details and sharp edges at low bit-rates.

Supporting multimedia applications over wireless networks has become a very active research topic recently because video applications are forecast to receive high demand in future wireless networks, such as ad hoc networks. However, enabling video transmission over wireless ad hoc networks is more challenging than over other wireless networks due to node mobility, interference, and the absence of a supporting in frastructure. This paper addresses the problem of video transmission over ad hoc networks. We propose to combine multiple description coding (MDC) with multiple source transport (Multipoint-to-Point transfer: MP2P) in order to maintain smooth video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we describe a comprehensive simulation and test bed experiment designed to show the effect of the proposed MP2P video transfer with MDC for two description cases of video streaming over wireless ad hoc networks. Service availability of a peer with dynamic buffering for multiple description coded videos on multi-source streaming networks

In multi-source streaming systems, such as peer-to-peer (P2P), because the buffer space of each peer is limited, most systems employ the cache-and-relay schemes that require each peer to cache the most recent video blocks it receives. As long as a peer keeps the initial part of the video stream in the buffer, it can relay the cached blocks to new arriving peers in a pipelining fashion and then reduce the loading of a server. In our previous research work, we propose a novel caching scheme for peer-to-peer on-demand video streaming, called Dynamic Buffering, which relies on the feature of multiple description coding to gradually reduce the number of cached descriptions in a peer once the buffer is full in order to prolong the service availability of a peer. In this paper we study the service availability of a peer with dynamic buffering for various numbers of different forwarded descriptions, and provide detailed analysis on how the number of different forwarded descriptions affects the average service availability of a peer. In addition, we derive the mathematical formulas of the reduction of the average service availability of a peer for various numbers of different forwarded descriptions, compared to the best case of the service availability of a peer, and the gain of the average service availability of a peer by releasing the overlapped buffer space with child peers. Our experimental results show that the reduction of the average service availability of a peer is only related to the number of different forwarded descriptions. Besides, regardless of arrival rates, most peers forwarding only one description would possess the highest average service availability for various numbers of different forwarding descriptions, which matches the criteria of the previous work Splitstream.

Owing to the wide deployment of broadband networks, information can now be rapidly disseminated all over the world. Only the content of static texts and pictures has not yet met users' demands. Along with the rapid advance of computer-related technologies, how to efficiently provide multimedia content for a large number of heterogeneous users on the Internet, especially videos, has become a noticeable issue. In this paper, we discuss the adaptation of multiple description coding (MDC) for the loopback buffering mechanism to address the issue of peer heterogeneity on content distribution network peer to peer (CDN-P2P) video-on-demand systems. Three description selection policies, Ordered, Round-Robin, and Open-Loop-First (OLF), are studied. In addition, we propose the intra-description recovery and inter-description recovery to deal with failed peers. The simulation results show that the OLF with loopback-MDC can significantly reduce the amount of uploading bandwidth of a proxy on CDN-P2P video-on-demand systems, and the inter-description recovery, sewing, can further effectively recover missing blocks and restore the continuity of a breaking sharing loop among peers.
