On Achievable Distortion Exponents for a Gaussian Source Transmitted Over Parallel Gaussian Channels With Correlated Fading and Asymmetric SNRs

This paper considers the end-to-end mean squared error distortion in reconstructing a memoryless proper-complex Gaussian source transmitted over a set of parallel block-fading Gaussian noise channels, where the fading gains are modeled as correlated Rayleigh distributed random variables with different average powers, thus resulting in asymmetric average received signal noise ratios (SNRs). The distortion exponent (i.e., how fast the average distortion decays to zero as the average received SNR increases) of several coding strategies based on separate source and channel coding is characterized. The definition of distortion exponent commonly used in the literature for SNR-symmetric channels is generalized to the case of SNR-asymmetric channels. It is shown that fading correlation degrades the achievable mean squared error distortion, but does not affect the distortion exponent in the analyzed achievable schemes. The logarithm of the determinant of the fading correlation matrix is found to be a proxy for measuring the performance degradation due to correlation as compared with the case of independent fading. The proposed framework allows one to study any number of correlated parallel channels, contrary to the most of the literature that restricts attention to two channels only, with the same received SNR and with independent fading. In particular, a scheme based on the multiple description coding with more than two descriptions is analyzed;it is shown that determining the distortion exponent in this setting reduces to solving a linear program, which can be done numerically very efficiently. The proposed methodology relies on combining the ideas from linear innovation sequences and properties of determinant of sub-matrices. Interestingly, it is found that SNR-asymmetry is beneficial for multiple description coding when the total average received SNR in decibel is held constant. multiple description (MD) video coding is one of the approaches that can be used to reduce the detrimental effects caused by transmission over error-prone networks. A number of approaches have been proposed for MD coding, where each provides a different tradeoff between compression efficiency and error resilience. This paper first presents two basic MD coding methods;one segments the video in the spatial domain, while the other in the frequency domain. Then a hybrid MD coding method is proposed. The hybrid MD encoder segments the video in both the spatial and frequency domains. In the case of data loss, the hybrid MD decoder takes advantage of the residual-pixel correlations in the spatial domain, and the coefficient correlations in the frequency domain, for error concealment. As a result, better error resilience can be achieved at high compression efficiency. The advantages of the proposed hybrid MD method are demonstrated in the contexts of descriptor loss in ideal channels and in packet-loss networks.

A new multiple description Transform coding (MDTC) was proposed by combining the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Hadamard Transform (HT). To overcome the inherent drawbacks in the Pairwise Correlating Transform (PCT), which are the computational complexity and hardware implementation, HT was used to introduce an effective redundancy between the descriptions by improving their correlation coefficient. The new approach were analyzed and compared to the conventional scheme in the case of four descriptions by using multiple gray scale test images having different spectral characteristics. The findings show a better performance of the proposed method, especially in the case of two packets lost. In addition, the proposed method ensures a low degradation of the image reconstructed when one packet or two packets are lost. Therefore, the proposed coder provides a good redundancy performance and an easier practical implementation than the classical approach. (C) 2014 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Adaptive bitrate streaming protocols, such as DASH, have seen extensive interest for their trade-off between smooth playbacks and quality fluctuations, aiming at increasing end-users' satisfaction toward video consumption over the Internet. The proposed work goes a step further and offers multiple-server support to Over-The-Top dynamic adaptive streaming applications: multiple-description DASH. This innovative lightweight streaming protocol takes advantage of bandwidth from multiple links by simultaneously retrieving video segments from several sources in different locations. Thanks to its codec agnosticism, DASH-compliance, and receiver-driven philosophy, our work presents a pragmatic and evolving solution that has been implemented and tested over the Internet. While multiple-description DASH comes at the cost of a tunable bandwidth consumption overhead, preliminary results demonstrate the strong QoE advantages against a standard DASH solution in terms of content quality and buffer occupancy on end-user side.

Over the past few years, adaptive bitrate streaming protocols, such as DASH, have risen to enhance the End-Users' experience towards video consumption over the Internet. Current methods perform a smoother playback (i.e., fewer re-buffering states) trading off with quality fluctuations due to the client-server link state. The proposed work goes a step further and introduces an innovative lightweight streaming solution by taking advantage of bandwidth aggregation over multiple paths using multiple content sources at the same time. This pragmatic evolving approach outperforms the QoE delivered by current DASH-based or P2P-based solutions and leverages the scope of action made available to the media delivery chain actors. The proposed solution has been implemented and is compared to a DASH-based approach used in most existing VoD use-cases through a first set of experiments. Results demonstrate the strong advantages in terms of quality delivered at the End-User's side and buffer occupancy. Discussion on the necessary trade-offs is also tackled.

Addressing transmission errors in underwater acoustic channels is a key challenge for the real-time video communication between an autonomous underwater vehicle and a surface station. In this paper, we propose an error-resilient video compression technique based on hybrid multiple descriptions and redundant pictures to overcome impact of packet loss in underwater acoustic transmission. Video sequences are split into two descriptions with selective redundant pictures in order to achieve a balance between coding efficiency and error resiliency. Experiments with underwater video sequences are presented to assess the performance of the proposed approach under various packet loss rates, in comparison to state-of-the-art single and multiple description coding techniques.

Multimedia communication system design encounters great challenges in network congestion and delay sensibility issues. multiple description coding system has recently emerged as a desirable framework for robust multimedia data transmission over the unreliable channels. This paper presents a prediction method of a lost label during transmission called lost label prediction algorithm in order to improve performance of side decoders when there always two of the three channels successfully transmitting the data. The lost label is predicted by putting on the nearest sublattice point between the two available labels. Simulation results show that the improved three descriptions lattice vector quantization system provides lower distortion and better reconstruction quality.

One of the important issues in multiple description coding (MDC) for image and video signals is to compose pictures of the "best" quality when more than one description is received at the decoder side. To this goal, a transform-domain overlapping technique combined with some necessary translations in the transform domain is proposed in the popular MDC schemes with staggered quantizers. However, the achievable gain is rather limited. In this paper, we formulate this enhancement problem as a total variation (TV) regularized optimization constrained by the knowledge of the quantization intervals of the DCT coefficients of each composed picture. In this TV-based approach, the transform-domain overlapping technique is used to find the more accurate quantization intervals in which the true DCT coefficients will fall while receiving more than one description. Simulation results demonstrate that such a TV-based enhancement yields a higher quality gain in both objective (e.g. PSNR-based) and subjective (i.e. visual perception) evaluations than using the transform-domain overlapping technique.

This paper proposes a rate controlled redundancy-adaptive multiple description video coding method. The method adjusts the level of redundancy allocated to each macroblock based on an end to end distortion model that takes into account the effects of error propagation and coneealment. Rate control at the macroblock level, ensures that the total bit-rate of all descriptions does not exceed the target rate. Results show that the proposed MDC codec can adapt very well to changing transmission conditions. When coupled with a MIMO architecture, performance gains of up to 14 dB were recorded over single description transmission at high packet error rates and no perceptible performance deficit at low packet error rates.

multiple description scalable coding based on T+2D wavelet decomposition structure is highly flexible for peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming. Finding the optimal truncation point of each code block (CB) within each description is an NP-hard problem. To implement an efficient low-complexity solution, we propose a simple clustering algorithm for partitioning the CBs into a limited number of clusters, such that one can find the optimal cluster-level redundancy-rate assignment matrix using a low-complexity full search. This approach improves the decoding quality compared to the co-echelon frameworks [1] [6] in which a non-optimal rate assignment matrix is used. In addition, the proposed clustering approach may be analytically represented by closed-form relations for low-complexity computation of optimal encoding parameters. The simulation results demonstrate that the adaptive proposed framework outperforms the approaches in [1] by (0.25 similar to 1dB), the scheme of [6] by (1.3 similar to 1.6dB), and the non-adaptive multiple description coding by (2.3 similar to 4.3dB). Furthermore, the proposed clustering approach requires %52-%88 less computations compared to the framework in [1].
