An analysis-based approach for unequal loss-protected multiple description coding (packetization) of the scalable (prioritized / progressive) source code streams is proposed. For a given number of packets (descriptions) of the known size, unequal loss-protected packetization leads to segment the scalable code stream, such that the source can be reconstructed with the maximum possible fidelity at the decoder side. Here, we find an analytical relation between optimal sizes of any two consecutive segments. This idea yields a low-complexity progressive solution with a performance close to that of local search [1], which has been approved as an efficient method to solve the segmentation problem. Simulation results are used to confirm the efficiency of the proposed method as compared with the local search algorithm.

In this paper we examine the Distortion-Rate (D-R) performance of two competing approaches for error-resilient transmission of scalable sources over error-prone packet-based memoryless channels. Thereby, we consider scalable Joint Source-Channel coding (JSCC) based on Forward Error Correction (FEC) and scalable multiple description coding (MDC). Our analysis considers memoryless Gaussian input sources encoded using source coders that can achieve theoretical performance bounds. This input source model is independent of actual implementations of the source coders and therefore allows drawing conclusions on the theoretical D-R performance of both approaches. Our comparative analysis indicates that in matched channel conditions, the use of an optimized FEC-based JSCC approach yields significantly better error resilience compared to the use of scalable MDC. Moreover, it is shown that in mismatched conditions a scalable JSCC approach has the potential to outperform a scalable MDC approach.

The most recent literature indicates multiple description coding (MDC) as a promising coding approach to handle the problem of video transmission over unreliable networks with different quality and bandwidth constraints. We introduce an approach moving from the concept of spatial MDC and introducing some algorithms to obtain sub-streams that are more efficient by exploiting some form of scalability. In the algorithm, we first generate four subsequences by sub-sampling, then two of these subsequences are jointly used to form each of the two descriptions. For each description, one of the original subsequences is predicted from the other one via some scalable algorithms, focusing on the inter layer prediction scheme. The proposed algorithm has been implemented as pre- and post-processing of the standard H.264/SVC coder. The experimental results are presented and we show it provides excellent results.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming applications are widely popular, e. g. PPstream and PPlive, because of higher transmission speed and data availability. A fact of P2P streaming is that different peers have different (asymmetric) capabilities for resource sharing, and thus, some asymmetric P2P (A-P2P) topology and membership management schemes should be adopted among P2P nodes having heterogeneous computing and communicating capabilities. Our research focuses on designing a novel A-P2P streaming architecture with a dedicated codec scheme that applies multiple description features into the scalable extension of H.264/AVC, which is adaptive and error-robust enough to tackle challenges in the A-P2P network environment. In the streaming architecture, our proposed device-aware P2P topology management is responsible for constructing a hierarchical membership-tree based on the capacity of upstream bandwidth and round-trip time. In addition, the buffer-aware scheduling scheme is able to determine whether the peer needs to reconnect to a proper source provider or not, based on the buffer status. In our experiments, corresponding performances, e.g. average peer-join time and average peak signal-to-noise ratio, were measured and demonstrated.

In the previous work on multiple description lattice vector quantizers (MDLVQs) with L >= 3 descriptions, once the central and side lattice codebooks are fixed, the decoding quality is determined for all numbers k of received descriptions. Therefore, it is not possible to achieve tradeoffs between the quality of reconstruction for different values of k, 1 <= k <= L - 1. This paper proposes a flexible MDLVQ capable of overcoming the above drawback. For this, a different reconstruction method is employed and a heuristic index assignment (IA) algorithm, which uses L - 2 parameters to control the distortions for 2 <= k <= L - 1, is developed. Experimental results show that the proposed MDLVQ, in addition to achieving the desired tradeoffs, significantly outperforms the classicMD scheme based on unequal erasure protection. The second contribution of this paper is a structured IA for the case of L = 3 and the derivation of the corresponding expressions of the distortions at high resolution. The proposed IA has a simple mechanism for controlling the tradeoff between the reconstruction quality for k = 1, 2. The IA is able to achieve a wide range of distortion values, while keeping the product of the distortions for k = 1, 2 the same as in the prior work.

TuBeck: a novel peer-to-peer streaming system with Loopback-MDC for scalable H.264/AVC videos

With the rapidly development of broadband networks, more and more users nowadays tend to acquire their desired videos from media-on-demand servers. How to efficiently provide multimedia contents for a large number of heterogeneous users on the Internet has become a noticeable issue. In our previous work, we proposed the Loopback-MDC scheme on CDN-P2P network to address such a scalability issue. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a novel peer-to-peer streaming system with the Loopback-MDC on actual networks, named TuBeck. The TuBeck consists of preprocessor, server, peer, and player modules with the support of network infrastructure library. In TuBeck, multimedia sources are preprocessed to multiple descriptions. Each description is divided as a sequence of H.264/AVC chunks by modified JM encoder for real-time streaming. The network infrastructure library provides the nodes (server and peers) with the fundamental functionalities of network connections and communications. Message exchange and streaming control among nodes follow the pre-defined LM protocol. The server, peer, and player modules are functionally multithreaded in order to enhance the system performance. The experimental results show that the Loopback-MDC is practical for realizing a P2P streaming system in terms of the server loading, CPU/Memory usage, and efficiency of failure recovery with respect to various arrival rates, failure rates, and viewing qualities.

multiple description coding (MDC) is an effective technique for transmission of image and video signals over error-prone channels. Naturally, a good MDC system needs to guarantee a quality gain when more descriptions are received. To this goal, a transform-domain overlapping technique can be used in the popular multiple description scalar quantization (MDSQ) scheme. However, this overlapping technique often becomes inapplicable in multiple description video coding (MDVC) because different reference frames are used in different descriptions at the motion-compensation stage. In this paper, we introduce a DCT-domain translation to solve this problem, i.e., after the translation, the overlapping technique can be applied to all predictive frames. We demonstrate that frames with a better quality can be composed upon receiving more descriptions. In particular, a remarkable objective quality gain (in terms of PSNR) has been observed.

Dynamic peer buffer adjustment to improve service availability on peer-to-peer on-demand streaming networks

In general, on-demand video services enable clients to watch videos from beginning to end. As long as clients are able to buffer the initial part of the video they are watching, on-demand service can provide access to the video to the next clients who request to watch it. Therefore, the key challenge is how to keep the initial part of a video in a peer's buffer for as long as possible, and thus maximize the service availability of a video for stream relay. In our previous research work, we proposed a novel caching scheme for peer-to-peer on-demand streaming, called Dynamic Buffering. The dynamic buffering relies on the feature of multiple description coding to gradually reduce the number of cached descriptions held in a peer's buffers, once the buffer is full. In this paper, we proposed three description dropping policies for dynamic buffering, called sequence dropping, m-dropping, and binary dropping. In addition, mathematical formulas of the reduced number of buffer adjustments of descriptions and the reduction of the average number of selectable descriptions for m-dropping and binary dropping by factors of the number of receiving descriptions (n) and the number of discarded descriptions (m) are established. Experimental results showed that the m-dropping, generally outperformed m-dropping, and binary dropping in terms of service availability. Even though the accumulated reduction of buffer adjustments for m-dropping policies was less than that for binary dropping, the average number of selectable descriptions for m-dropping was much greater than that for binary dropping. Furthermore, Compared with the sequence dropping, the m-dropping, , would have much less number of buffer adjustments with little difference of the number of selectable descriptions.

Evaluation of the MDC and FEC over the quality of service and quality of experience for video distribution in ad hoc networks

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) offer an excellent scenario for deploying communication applications because of the connectivity and versatility of this kind of networks. In contrast, the topology is usually extremely dynamic causing high rate of packet loss, so that ensuring a specific Quality of Service (QoS) for real-time video services becomes a hard challenge. In this paper, we evaluate the effect of using multiple description coding (MDC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques for improving video quality in a multimedia content distribution system. A hybrid architecture using fixed and wireless ad hoc networks is proposed, which enables the use of multipoint-to-point transmission. MDC and FEC mechanisms can be combined with multipath transmission to increase the network efficiency and recover lost packets, improving the overall Quality of Experience (QoE) of the receiver. Simulations have been analyzed paying attention to objective parameters (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, Packet Delivery Ratio, Decodable Frame Rate and interruptions) and subjective parameters. Results show that MDC increases the probability of packet delivery and FEC is able to recover lost frames and reduce video interruptions in moderate mobility scenarios, resulting in the improvement of video quality and the final user experience.

Intra-layer network coding for lossy communication of progressive codes

In this paper we discuss layered multicast (LM) of progressive source codes using network coding. LM is absolutely optimal if different sinks in the network are satisfied up to their max-flow. Since absolutely optimal intra-layer network strategies might not exist for general networks, we present conditions under which an absolutely optimal, intra-layer multicast strategy exists for a given network and how that strategy may be efficiently constructed. We also discuss the problem of designing optimal intra-layer multicast strategies for general directed networks. (C) 2014 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
