multipledescription codes have been shown to facilitate heterogeneous multicast using routing with replication. We develop the combination of practical network coding and multiple description coding (introduced by Chou et al.), but here for video multicast in lossless networks where users get video according to their available resources. We also show that network coding enables the server to provide Quality of Service that is centrally controlled. The lack of the need to maintain multiple trees (as in routing) helps in ease of construction of the multicast delivery system. The simulation results show that using practical network coding provides significant control over the rate allocation for the resources.

The resource allocation optimization for multicast service in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems is an important research topic. It is known that in traditional multicast schemes the rate in each multicast group is severely limited by the user who has the minimum channel gain (MCG) on each subchannel. To counteract this effect, in this paper, we introduce the multiple description coding (MDC) into the multiple-group multicast service optimization for the downlink OFDMA, and study the weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization methods under various system constraints and assuming discrete-rate modulation. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides a significant performance enhancement than the MCG scheme and an MDC-based near-optimal iterative bit loading (IBL) approach. Besides this, our method converges very fast and enjoys a low complexity that is linear in the numbers of users, subchannels, and modulation bit levels.

This work presents a multiple description coding (MDC) scheme for compressed three dimensional (3D) meshes based on forward error correction (FEC). It allows flexible allocation of coding redundancy for reliable transmission over error-prone channels. The proposed scheme is based on progressive geometry compression, which is performed by using wavelet transform and modified SPIHT algorithm. The proposed algorithm is optimized for varying packet loss rates (PLR) and channel bandwidth. Modeling distortion-rate function considerably decreases computational complexity of bit allocation.

This work proposes a novel multiple description coding (MDC) method for encrypted images transmitted over unreliable networks. Here, a pseudorandom permutation is used to mask the original content to protect privacy. The encoder splits the encrypted data into two descriptions, and each description includes different rigid pixels and coefficients generated from orthogonal transform to the elastic pixels. An acceptable quality reconstruction can be decodable from the side decoder through iteratively updating the values of coefficients based on the spatial correlation. At the central decoder, since the more accurate rigid pixels received, the more similar predicted image can be considered as initialization. Moreover, the operation of iterative reconstruction twice to unknown pixels also makes the estimations closer to the real values. Therefore, a high quality reconstruction from multipledescriptions can be obtained at the central decoder. Comparison is made with the single descriptioncoding and the experiments result is shown that the reconstruction performance with the multiple description coding for encrypted images is significantly improved.

The use of multipledescriptions (MD) provides a reliable communications solution over packet loss channels;the polar source coding (PC) takes advantage of reasonable complexities in both the encoder and decoder sides. In this paper, a polar multiple description coding is introduced for the binary input sequence with Hamming distortion in which the central decoder is aided by a common description from the encoder. The algorithm for the frozen bit selection is studied. The performance evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed system for MD with PC.

We present a multiple description coding (MDC) scheme for 3-D plane-based surfaces. First, planes are split into two disjoint subsets, called descriptions, each of which provides an equal contribution in 3-D surface reconstruction. To optimize the quality of the decoded surface, planes in each description are adaptively compressed according to the channel error condition. Then, the two compressed bitstreams are transmitted over distinct channels to the decoder. At the decoder, if both channels are available, the two bitstreams are decoded and merged together to reconstruct a high quality surface. If only one channel is available, we employ a hole filling method to fill visual holes and reconstruct a smooth 3-D surface. Therefore, the proposed algorithm provides an acceptable 3-D surface, even when one channel is totally lost.

In audio communications over a lossy packet network, packet loss concealment techniques are needed to mitigate a user's frustration when perceiving the deterioration of the quality of the decoded signal. multiple description coding (MDC) is a useful solution to this problem. In this paper, we describe an MDC method to conceal packet losses for wideband audio streaming based on the sample splitting method in the time domain and encoding by an MPEG-I audio layer III (MP3) encoder. Experiments were conducted to compare the proposed method with several conventional methods, results confirming that our proposed method performs the playback of the decoded signal with sufficient quality for a range of bit rates from 160 to 320 kbps, even with a transmitted packet loss rate of 10%.

A multiple description coding scheme based on prediction-induced randomly offset quantizers is proposed, where each description encodes one source subset with a small quantization stepsize, and other subsets are predictively coded with a large quantization stepsize. Due to the prediction, the quantization bins that a coefficient belongs to in different descriptions are randomly overlapped with each others. The optimal reconstruction is obtained by finding the intersection of all received quantization bins. Using the recently developed random quantization theory, the closed-form expression of the expected distortion is obtained. The proposed scheme is then applied to lapped transform-based multiple-description image coding, and an iterative optimization scheme is developed to find the optimal lapped transform. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves better performance than other methods in this category.

In this paper, we proposed a method to decrease the effects of data loss in communication of a video sequence using phase scrambling. Phase scrambling is used to spread the data of each pixel of a video sequence over all pixels of the scrambled video. In our experiments we studied the effects of different loss patterns. The results obtained by employing this method shows great improvements compared to cases of data loss without exploiting phase scrambling. This technique can be readily used in transmission of video segments over unreliable networks.

In this paper, we propose a multiple description coding (MDC) method for reliable transmission of compressed time consistent 3D dynamic meshes. It trades off reconstruction quality for error resilience to provide the best expected reconstruction of 3D mesh sequence at the decoder side. The method is based on partitioning the mesh frames into two sets by temporal subsampling and encoding each set independently by a 3D dynamic mesh coder. The encoded independent bitstreams or so-called descriptions are transmitted independently. The 3D dynamic mesh coder is based on predictive coding with spatial and temporal layered decomposition. In addition, the proposed method allows for different redundancy allocations by including a number of encoded spatial layers of the frames in the other set. The algorithm is evaluated with redundancy-rate-distortion curves and it is shown that, when one of the descriptions is lost, acceptable quality can be achieved with around 50% redundancy.
