Developing real time multimedia applications for best effort networks such as the Internet requires prohibitions against jitter delay and frame loss. This problem is further complicated in wireless networks as the rate of frame corruption or loss is higher in wireless networks while they generally have lower data rates compared to wired networks. On the other hand, variations of the bandwidth and the receiving device characteristics require data rate adaptation capability of the coding method. multiple description coding (MDC) methods are used to solve the jitter delay and frame loss problems by making the transmitted data more error resilient, however, this results in reduced data rate because of the added overhead. MDC methods do not address the bandwidth variation and receiver characteristics differences. In this paper a new method based on integrating MDC and the scalable video coding extension of H.264 standard is proposed. Our method can handle both jitter delay and frame loss, and data rate adaptation problems. Our method utilizes motion compensating scheme and, therefore, is compatible with the current video coding standards such as MPEG-4 and H.264. Based on the simulated network conditions, our method shows promising results and we have achieved tip to 36dB for average Y-PSNR.

A novel multipledescription image coding scheme, called dual-tree discrete wavelet transform based multipledescription image coding is proposed. First, the 2D dual-tree discrete wavelet transform is applied to an image to produce 2 wavelet trees with complementary information. A noise-shaping algorithm is then employed to remove the redundancies of both trees and form the basic parts of two descriptions. A side noise shaping algorithm is proposed to draw the supplementary information for side decoding from the other tree. Basic information from one tree and supplementary from the other tree are grouped to form a description. Two descriptions are then dispatched from different channels. Because every description includes critical information of the picture, the reconstructed image from any single channel can have acceptable fidelity. The reconstructed image is of much better quality if both channels are available. Simulation results have demonstrated the performance of the proposed algorithm.

multiple description coding (MDC) offers an elegant approach to data transmission over lossy packet-based networks. This paper proposes an MDC decoder for Compressed Sensing (CS) based MDC. Our decoder minimizes l(0) norm of the total variation of the image in a recursive manner, making it effective when different descriptions experience different time delays in the network. The proposed approach brings in a significant performance improvement in reconstruction accuracy and reconstruction time.

multiple description coding (MDC) is a way of trading off coding gain with robustness to channel errors This paper presents a novel and efficient two-description image coding scheme in wavelet domain Here, the two-layered MDC method is adopted based on the feature of wavelet coefficients Firstly, the low-frequeney wavelet coefficients are partitioned into two new correlated groups as two basic descriptions with pairwise correlating transform (PCT) Secondly, we can get two enhanced descriptions from the high-frequency wavelet subbands of the highest-level decomposition by adaptive down-sampling Finally. four template operators are adopted to detect the texture direction of high-frequeney subbands, and we use the Wavelet Domain In for tree Reconstruction (WDIR) to conceal coefficients loss in Wavelet-Trees with the texture direction when one enhanced description lost during transmission Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed MDC scheme can achieve good coding performance

With the purpose of reducing the coding complexity and delay of the separation-based schemes, an analog joint source-channel coding scheme is proposed for transmissions through parallel AWGN channels with side information at the receiver. This scheme divides the bidimensional source space into a set of hexagons and transmits the relative position of the source vectors inside the corresponding hexagon by using two complimentary analog mappings. The results are satisfactory, specially taking into consideration the low complexity and delay of the proposed scheme.

This paper proposes an optimized, low-complexity methodology that combines Joint Source-Channel coding (JSCC) based on Forward Error Correction (FEC) coding and scalable multiple description coding (MDC) mechanisms for error-resilient data transmission over error-prone packet-based channels. Additionally, we report a comparative theoretical analysis between (i) MDC, and FEC-based scalable JSCC for sources encoded using (ii) Single descriptioncoding (SDC) and (iii) MDC. Our analysis assumes ideal source coders that can achieve the theoretical performance bounds for a Gaussian source. This source model is independent of the actual implementation and therefore allows to draw conclusions on the theoretical performance of these approaches and to determine which methodology should be employed in specific transmission scenarios.

multiple description coding is an appealing tool to guarantee graceful signal degradation in the presence of unreliable channels. While the principles of multipledescription scalar quantization are well-understood and solid guidelines exist to design effective systems, the same does not hold for vector quantization, especially at low bit-rates, where burdensome and unsatisfactory design techniques discourage its use altogether in applications. In this work we use the self-organizing maps to design multipledescription VQ codebooks. The proposed algorithm is flexible, fast and effective: it deals easily with a large variety of situations, including the case of more than two descriptions, with a computational complexity that remains fully affordable even for large codebooks, and a performance comparable to that of reference techniques. A thorough experimental analysis, conducted in a wide range of operating conditions, proves the proposed technique to perform on par with well-known reference methods based on greedy optimization, but with a much lower computational burden. In addition, the resulting codebook can be itself optimized, thus providing even better performance. All experiments are fully reproducible, with all software and data available online for the interested researchers. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Packet loss and delay are the major network impairments for transporting real-time voice over internet protocol (IP) networks. In the proposed system, multipledescriptions of the speech are used to take advantage of packet path diversity. A new objective method is presented for predicting the perceived quality of multi-stream voice transmission. Also proposed is a joint playout buffer and forward error control (FEC) adjustment scheme that maximizes the perceived speech quality via delay-loss trading. Experimental results showed that the proposed multi-stream voice transmission scheme achieves significant reductions in delay-and packet-loss rates as well as improved speech quality.

Real-time video streaming over long-term evolution (LTE) networks is investigated in the presence of mobile-to-mobile collaboration. A multi-objective problem for energy and distortion minimization is formulated and an energy-efficient, quality of service (QoS) aware suboptimal approach is presented for collaborative video transmission. In the proposed approach, mobiles are grouped into collaborative clusters using a low-complexity clustering algorithm. In each cluster, collaboration is implemented by having a cluster head send the content to other cluster members using a short-range wireless communications technology. The cluster heads receive the data on the long-range LTE links, either via unicasting or multicasting. LTE scheduling is taken into account on the long range transmissions. Videos with single descriptioncoding (SDC), multiple description coding (MDC), and scalable video coding (SVC) are considered. Results show that the proposed approach leads to significant energy savings and enhanced QoS compared to the non-collaborative scenario. Furthermore, MDC is shown to outperform SDC in terms of QoS, at the cost of a slight increase in energy consumption. The same conclusions were reached with respect to SVC compared to single layer coding. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

multiple description coding (MDC) has been proposed as a possible solution to real-time video delivery over relay-assisted wireless networks to exploit path diversity. In this paper, we study layered multipledescription video over relay-assisted mobile networks, such as LTE-A, and develop a framework that routes packets to different relays based on source-channel-relay parameters. The proposed system comprises, besides layered MDC, (i) application-layer forward error correction via Random linear codes (RLC) that are very suitable in the relaying scenarios, due to their rateless nature, (ii) unequal error protection (UEP), using the recently proposed expanding window technique, that relies on probabilistic scheduling of layered packets. We generate layered multipledescriptions using data slicing and data partitioning features of H. 264/AVC and conduct simulations by modelling a two-relay LTE-A setup with the finite state Markov chain model. Simulation results show benefits of relaying with optimized routing and UEP.
